Morocco Hiker Murderers

Post by Blackrod » Thu Jul 18, 2019 9:14 pm

To be sentenced to death. Beheaded the tourists and filmed it. First death sentences since 1993. No doubt it has seriously impacted tourism in the area and a fit punishment for the crimes committed on innocent people.

One destination that has never ever appealed to me - even less so with this incident.

Enjoyed Agadir a few years back but i suppose thats a bit " touristy" compared to other parts of Morocco?
Not sure it's a country I would return to.

Spent 4 days in Marrakech and stayed at a Riad in a local area within the city walls. Had to be careful at night but thought the place was absolutely brilliant.

Loads of stuff to see and do but just walking around the local side streets during the day absorbing the local culture was an experience in itself

Did you get hassled by the Water carriers in the Djemaa El Fna?

Did a tour a few years ago and went to Rabat & Fez as well, although the smell where they dye the leather is something else!

chefchaouen is worth a visit where everything is painted blue.

We got hassled non stop everywhere we went but its just part of the culture and theres ways of handling it.

I could see a lot of people getting annoyed and hating it but it could be fun at times and when you werent interested if you just treated it as a background noise you could easily zone out. (I found people polite with it and not too in your face)

Girl I was with spoke fluent French which made it easier as she could communicate with the locals almost perfectly

Went hiking there a few years back with Explore with local guides and up in the northern mountains off the beaten track.
A beautiful part of the country with no problems whatsoever. The only annoyance was the middle-class English trying to be all Bohemian , flocking over from Spain to enjoy the plentiful and cheap supplies of weed.
Just try getting a beer, though...

When you hear of terrible incidents like this, you do need to be careful not to assume it's typical. Read up on what Morocco, the real Morocco - or any other place for that matter - offers before making a judgement.

You've been, it is very touristy, you didn't fancy it - that's fair enough.

I've done two trips with Explore - "High Atlas Trek", climbing Toubkal & the other one was called the "Marrakesh Express".

You can't move in the Lake District for headless corpses.

Dont agree with the death penalty. But its only as barbaric as what they did. So **** em amd good on Morrocco for taking a stand on the scumbags.

As dor the country. Didnt get hassled as much as i expected. Egypt, Gambia and Magaluf were worse... But probably one of my least favourite places. That said glad I went. Was an experience. Interesting place. But food surprisingly boring.

Spent some time in Marrakesh in 2010, paid a taxi driver some cash for him to show me some untouristy destinations and up into the Atlas mountains.

Lovely place.

Beautiful country, did some filming there in 2010. Used to be a hotbed of filming as it serves as a great stand in for so many countries, still popular but less US production as they're scared of going anywhere Arabic.
The local film crew and extras were lovely people, hard working and very friendly. They very much see their heritage as being of the Berber people and far removed from the middle east.

Best coffee I ever tasted, rich dark brown served in a shot glass with one small cube of sugar. Sat outside a small baked brown roadside house several thousand feet above sea level in the Atlas Mountains. Also the scariest road I've ever been on at time, that drop a meter to your right...

Been a couple of times and didn’t really enjoy either visit. Doubt I’ll be returning. I don’t like beheaders either although that’s just incidental.

It's posts like this that get you all the abuse on here.

It is a little strange that Blackrod has selected to alert us to this particular incident. Can we expect updates regarding all the gruesome murders worldwide ?

I suppose that if he has any kind of agenda then a couple of major ingredients are present in this one.

I work in Morocco (Casablanca) on a regular basis (usually 1 week every two months) Been going for the past 4 years. I love the place. Personally feel safer there than the UK. Happily walk around Casablanca late at night and not feel threatened. Unlike our capital city or any big city.

I've shipped an Enduro motorbike over from Spain to Morocco with a group of six. We did a 10 day "off road" trip.
Fantastic other-worldly place. It's got a different feel to Europe, both in culture and terrain.
I've travelled a fair bit in Arabia and North Africa.....it gets under your skin.
The people are generally more open and friendly than Western Europe.....motorcyclists are often well very well received in Africa and Arabia, the locals (and Police) are often interested in your bike.
