I was in Cyprus last march and there was literally thousands and thousands of painted lady butterfly everywhere.
They too had the same phenomena, made the national news and papers, and it was predicted that they would head on to western europe by July.Isn,t nature just incredible!!

Incredibly they fly at up to 30mph and make a journey of 7500 miles from Africa to the Arctic Circle and back again.

Whereas painted gentlemen would use Easyjet.

I like the bit where they ask for volunteers to count them. How do you know if you see one you have counted before? This is a serious question that is now doing my head in. Given that you don't get to know them personally how is it possible to differentiate between Monday's batch and say, Wednesday's?
Wife: How's the butterfly counting gone this morning dear?
Bloke: Oh brilliant, counted 22 today.
Wife: That's nice dear. How many did you count on Monday?
Bloke: 17 love.
Wife: Very nice dear. Were they all different ones from Monday?
Bloke: Err...well...I think so.
Wife: Are you certain dear?
Bloke: Aaarrgh!!!

You’re supposed to mark them with tippex.

Now you are really doing my head in.
Wife: Did you remember your tipex dear...for the butterfly counting thing?
Bloke: Yes I did love.
Wife: And what do you write on the butterfly, once you've caught it that is?
Bloke: Ah, that's the clever bit, I number it.
Wife: Is there enough room dear...on it's wing I mean? What happened when you got to double figures?
Bloke: One number on each wing. (aside: that'll shut her up).
Wife: What happens when you get to a hundred dear?
Bloke: Aarrgh!!!

Thanks for pointing that out to the organisers of the count, I'm pretty sure that they've overlooked this! :D Seriously, they factor in the fact that some butterflies will be counted multiple times and will deduct a percentage eg 10%, from the total number counted.

I'm sure they have a way mate, it's just some things capture my weird sense of humour. It would be interesting to know though what percentage they allow for over-count.

Mike Nesmith's mum invented liquid correction fluid - Tippex.

And the lad himself wrote a song about butterflies - Yellow Butterfly. OK, he made a mistake with the species but we can't have everything.

They come over here, fluttering their fluttery wings, acting like they own the place while pollinating everything grows. It makes me sick.
