I've lived my life with virtually no crime at all happening.
Why would I worry about it now?

Its not just all the City of London stuff.
I'll be working in London this week and will be out for a few beers in Clapham on Wednesday. The place will be buzzing and will be a hive of activity with a whole mix of people with all sorts of backgrounds.
In our group alone as well as locals they'll be northerners, Welsh, Scottish, Indian, Eastern European, Portuguese, French etc which makes for brilliant conversation as you get such a diverse perspective on life and experiences.
They'll be a whole range of bars and food places to choose from and will be a great atmosphere
Now compare that to going down Padiham or Burnley on a Wednesday night for a drink or a meal and it just isnt comparable. I appreciate some people may just prefer their life in a place like Burnley and Padiham and it might offer all they need but to label London as a sh*thole is juts ignorant

I divide my time between St Albans (20 mins on train into London) and Barrowford and both are great in their own way. Excellent posts from Tim Noone and Devil’s Advocate above as London is undoubtedly a fantastic, vibrant and endlessly interesting City. Posts labelling it a “toilet” and suchlike are just laughable.

Yeah, you can very easily pay £6-7 for a pint in Manchester. There really isn’t much difference in the average price of a pint between Manchester and London, in my personal experience.

I've been in 'spoons in various parts of London, and in some prices are not hugely different to around here.
If you're talking about tourist areas, Westminster, "the City" and the West End then you've a point, but then you won't get a cheap drink in the touristy areas of Europe's other major capitals either.
(You've got to bear in mind that rents, business rates and local taxes etc. are much higher in Mayfair and Piccadilly than in Bacup and Padiham.

It's a real surprise to me how many of the posters on this thread haven't a clue about London, the most amazing city in the world, if their yardstick is the price of a pint of beer. That must cover all the cultural, historical, educational, architectural, sporting bases. And I love Manchester.

London is over populated and overcrowded is the main reason I dislike it.
The people of London are also quite ignorant and live in the bubble, not to mention they are mostly champagne socialist types.
Not a fan of Manchester either although it’s much better than London.

What a lot of utter nonsense. Vast majority of Londoners will rarely if ever taste champagne. The vast majority are just about paying the rent.Right_winger wrote: The people of London are also quite ignorant and live in the bubble, not to mention they are mostly champagne socialist types.
The capital has problems with child poverty, young adult unemployment, low pay and high housing costs, according to London's Poverty Profile. The study shows 28% of people in London are in poverty, seven percentage points higher than the rest of England. (taken from a report produced by think tank the New Policy Institute.)
That's the downside to London that no one has so far mentioned on here, but as a capital city it's absolutely fantastic, and in terms of its extremes of wealth and poverty not dissimilar to many great world capitals.

I agree that there are parts of London which are absolute pits. There are nice parts aswell but as a whole it’s too busy, overcrowded and cramped. There’s not much quality greenspace and the people in general have little patience and not the most welcoming. To be fair the whole south east can be labelled similar.
Compare London to the likes of Edinburgh and it’s not even close which is the better city, and Edinburgh isn’t even the best city in Scotland either.

Proportionately I doubt there are any more of these in London than anywhere else in Europe.Champagne Socialist: a person who espouses socialist ideals while enjoying a wealthy and luxurious lifestyle.
28% live in poverty according to my link and a very large proportion of the rest just about get by because housing is so expensive. The vast majority of Londoners have very little disposable income after paying the essential bills.

nice to read that the positive , pro london comments invariably come from comfortably off northeren elements who can sample the quality end of big city life. all big city dwellers have an ability to espouse the finery and choice, provided they have fat wallets. the rest of you can go to hell, as its too rich for your thickheaded palates.

Re: if you come to London, you're in, says...
An earlier post, #75, mentioned the diversity in the context of gathering for drinks.
That diversity is a real joy. Every nation on Earth is represented in London, their art & culture, food, science, language, places of worship.
And let’s not forget that the waves of immigrants have contributed the the success of the city they made their home AND to the success of our beloved country.
But just because I consider that London is the greatest city on earth doesn’t mean that I dislike other cities.
New York, Cairo, Tokyo, Kyoto, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Yangon, Istanbul, Rome, Paris, Athens, Seoul, San Francisco, Budapest, Berlin, Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata etc etc are all great world cities in their own ways and enjoyable to live and visit. Manchester, Edinburgh, Leeds (even).
But London is the place for me.
