Dwight McNeil

Post by No Ney Never » Sun Jul 21, 2019 8:54 am

Newcastle are interested in £30m-ratedBurnley winger Dwight McNeil, but new boss Steve Bruce is only prepared to offer £15m for the 19-year-old. (Sun on Sunday)

Hope that they were watching him yesterday at Crewe - hardly beat a man, hardly had a run down the wing and ended the game playing somewhere right side of midfield! Very poor.

Just goes to show, but for injuries and him grasping his chance, he could have been playing for Cheltenham.

People forget we tried

Hendrick, Taylor and Barnes out wide before McNeil.
He literally was the last resort, yet some will have you believe it was a masterstroke.

I seem to be in the minority that think he's just ok. I certainly cannot believe some people think he's worth 40 and 50m.

Going rate for young attacking players, Macca. He had a good tournament in France and scouts eyes are on them matches, looking for the next big thing.

I reckon Nathaniel Clyne might disagree as he’s still wondering where Dwight went on the South coast.

Interesting that Clyne looks like he’s going to Palace. I think Dwight will be looking forward to that game.

He's certainly worth £30m+ and will probably be worth £40m+ after this coming season.

Aston Villa wanted £30m - £40m for Jack Grealish, who managed a paltry 6 goals in the Championship last season.

Hi MACCA,

Like us all you're fully entitled to your opinion. I agree with you that the "reported" (I don't believe these stories TBH) fees are ridiculous.

"I seem to be in the minority that think he's just ok. "

However, with all due respect, I wish all our players were "just ok" if that's what Dwight is.

The club says we don't need to sell. Lets see if they mean it. Keeping him and Tarks would be fantastic and the price of both will only continue to go up. Be sad to see Tom go, if he does, but that is an easier role to fill-particularly if he wont sign a new contract

Is that the best you can do, an FA Cup game from 2 years ago when McNeil hadn't even made his debut, good grief.

So you're not saying he's not played wide left for s few years anymore?

I never knew there were stipulations as to when, where or who against.
I just told you he had, you said he hasn't for s few years.

Ps 2018 wasnt 2 years ago ( the clue is we're only in 2019 now ) but suppose you need something to grasp on to.

you said Barnes has played on the left instead on McNeil, i pointed out that this isn't true, neither has Taylor for that matter bar the Europa league.

Doesn't make sense: why would Newcastle think they could poach the best youth prospect of a league rival with a lowball offer? It's not as though he's unlikely to get games. Odd movement from the Magpies, if true.

I said Barnes was tried before McNeil, that is true.
I said Taylor was tried before McNeil, that is true.
I said Hendrick was tried before McNeil, that is true.

Regardless of competition, when or how often, the fact remains what I said was correct.

You either didn't know, or forgot, and that's fine, but you can't say it didn't happen.

You can put all these stipulations in about it was x competition, it was x time, it was only x amount of times, however the fact remains it happened, just accept it.

Ah so in the same vein Rodriguez will be the last resort because we've tried Defour and Hendrick as a number 10 before him, gotcha ;)

Even David Eyres was tried in left midfield before McNeill.

Must have been a really slow news day for the sports department, for the rumours to be so wild.

So where we up to now?

Just a simple yes or no should suffice, on the things I've said...

Has Barnes played out wide?
Has Taylor played out wide?
Has Hendrick played out wide?
Was McNeil possibly last scenario?
Is 18 months a few years?
If it happened in the Europa league or FA cup it doesn't count?

We're at the point where you admit that you were wrong that Barnes has started a game on the left since McNeil joined the first team.

The things you've said are true. Barnes, Taylor and Hendrick have played on the wing, Hendrick played on the opposite wing to McNeil during the last season also. I only remember Taylor playing on the wing in Athens.

It doesn't really have anything to do with Dwight McNeil really.

The few games that Barnes played in that position came 6 months before Dwight made his first team debut. Throwing a lad into first team action in top flight football or against a opponent like City mid-season isn't going to work out for anyone. He was brought into the fray last season and given a first team preseason, it was done in the best way for both parties. It's also worth noting that Jon Walters was on the bench at City that day, he has played on the wing for the bulk of his career. As for the Europa League, I attended the game in Athens and that was no place to hand an 18-year-old lad his first taste of action. The antics from both the crowd and opposition would of been too much for him.

So the goal posts are now, has started a game, not in Europa league, not in the cup, after McNeil made his debut, only on the same side.

May aswell change it to only counts if we played in black and white stripes.

100% agree, it's getting more and more difficult to read the sensible posts on this board between all the petty squabbles.
As if it's not enough having all the left v right stuff on anything vaguely political (or managed to be turned political); we have a thread here about possible interest in one of our players that's turned into a squabble about whether or not Barnes ever played left wing.

But he has played left wing so no need to squabble, theres nothing to squabble about it's either true or not.

Although a squabble usually happens when one person cant admit they got it wrong. I even said ge could have forgotten, but still he couldn't accept it.

AndyClaret, to be fair you said Barnes hadn't played on the left for a few years. This wasn't anything to do with McNeil.

Macca is correct - he has played left in the last few years.
