Great news, a few of us were wondering what had happened to him following the rumoured interest from other other clubs.

I believe Burnley nearly cocked it up though and lost one off the biggest talents at that in age in the country.

I've contacted sky bet to get a price on him featuring for the first team by the end off the season

Genuine question - what protection does him being under a a scholar contract give us if a big club comes calling?

I really sense big strides being made in the academy and for me there’s no better emotion in football than watching a young kid come through the ranks and perform for the first team.

Those who have seen Lewis play - what type of striker is he (i.e, pacy/off the shoulder type or more of a battering ram/target man?) and, crucially, just how good is he for his age comparative to the others you have seen at that level?

A few have noted above could play in the first team for us this season, is he really looking at that level? Does he stand out like McNeil did?

Good athlete , good pace and an intelligent footballer with natural instincts to score goals, but with being still 16 he still has a lot of developing to do yet.
With coming from Chadderton but being with us from 8 year old , will he class as one of our own :D

Does he stand out like McNeil did? To be quite honest I don’t recall McNeil standing out when he played a few u18 games while still an u16, let alone play for the u23s.

Be absolutely certain, he’s no battering ram. He’s not built to play like that. From the limited viewings I’ve had of him, he’s a very clever and technical player who clearly has an eye for goal.

I was very concerned we might lose him to be honest given a number of other clubs were showing an interest. This signing is very good news for our academy and I look forward to see him playing again this season although I suspect it will likely be with the u23s.

The most pleasing thing is despite interest elsewhere he has signed, shows the academy is moving in the right direction and doing the right things.

good news for him ... + us!

also we've:

'...completed the signing of goalkeeper Lewis Thomas as a second-year scholar, with the 17-year-old moving to Turf Moor from Manchester City...'

that's the 2nd goalkeeper we've signed from the Premier Champions in 12 months! ;)

congratulations + good luck to both Lewis'

Just a point on this, it's great to see the academy moving forwards again, but Lewis joined when the scouting / development centre network was at it's strongest, before Jason Blake decided that player like Lewis wouldn't choose to sign for Burnley and dismantled it all.

Lewis and a few other young lads are being paid a decent wedge by the club. Lewis is already sponsored by some brand if someone I spoke to a bit ago is to believed then his dad gets a healthy lump of money for travel expenses etc too....

The club away from the 1st team is moving on leaps and bounds and it’s no surprise the big clubs aren’t some magical land anymore.

This crop of lads coming through to scholar status look damn special though and I can see a few making the transition through to 1st team football with us or other teams at a high level.

I love nothing more in football than seeing Burnley bringing players through the academy and into the first team.

I hope this talented young lad makes it that far, I really do.

What does 'Scholar' mean? I mean, I know what scholar means, but as a footballing term? Is it so he can play in U23's or something or is it a unique term to Burnley?
I don't know much about the youth system, so consider this part of my education.

Was he brought to the club by that scouting guru dandeclaret i wonder ?

Lads at 16 all sign two year scholarships and that’s at all clubs, not just us. Part of that scholarship is continued education away from football which sees them spend time in a classroom. Some of them opt to continue with A levels if that’s what they still call them.

No Bodge - not a player I was involved in bringing in - but players were rarely down to individuals, and it was committed people working in teams, usually watching players multiple times to form detailed views on them.

If Jay and Dwight are in a starting 11 next season, what a great advert it would be for any young footballer looking at clubs where there's a real chance of progression.
If you're young and talented, Burnley FC is a real option once again.

Absolutely no doubt that we are progressing. We've got the advantage of having a bit more money too these days to spend on the academy but given we were so close to losing it altogether about five years ago, the turn round has been remarkable.

Throughout the 50s 60s and early 70s we always had a conveyor belt that produced youngsters that went on to become quality players. More often than not they were sold on but the production line managed to supply a replacement.

It starting to look like somebody's found the "On" switch for the conveyor belt again.

Must have been round the back of the large pile of dry powder!

This can only be good news. Although Dan has said he was recruited under the old regime then it's a reminder of how long the recruitment/development process is. Time will tell if we can get good scouts back to TM (I hope we have started to but obviously don't know).

While Dwight and Lewis are at Burnley thanks to scouts who have long (and sadly) gone there is still a huge positive in terms of the coaching they've received in the post-Blake era. We know that Michael Duff played a fairly big role in Dwight's development. It was a real pity to lose Duffo but perfectly understandable for him to go to Cheltenham.

Jimmy Mac once said that virtually every young player who turned up at Gawthorpe went on to play in the first team. I believe the credit for it all should go to Alan Brown who wanted to bring in young players. We'd little, probably no, competition at the time and to produce a title winning team from home grown players plus a couple from Northern Ireland was incredible, even back then.

We will never, ever get back to those sort of days but hopefully some oil has gone on that conveyor belt.

I think Duff was a major player in the rebirth of the academy. It was being run like a pub set up (with no disrespect to pubs) and Duff came in just at the right time and helped make it more professional, and he very much pushed Dwight forward, taking him to the under-23s for the 2017/18 season when he was still just 17. And that is something that is continuing with Steve Stone who has already used Richardson and Ben Woods in the under-23s despite them only being 16.

It is quite remarkable how this little club led the way in the 50's. Apart from Matt Busby and United at the time I cannot think there were many clubs trying what we did and as CT pointed out above we won the league with players lifted from non-league or through our ranks from youth squads save for Jimmy Mac and Alex Elder and those two were hardly dry behind their ears when they arrived at the Turf (Mac 18yrs and Elder 17 yrs).

Doubt Hixon had anything to do with the players coming in that won the championship - he came later with the likes of O'Neil and Thomas I think.

I see that BIlly Ingham was missed from that list, however, it was definintely Jack Hixon who took him to the Turf. Jack was a regular visitor to Bomarsund Welfare football ground which is where South East Northumberland schools played their games. That is where I first saw Freddie Smith play!

Jack was a regular visitor to Bomarsund Welfare football ground which is where South East Northumberland schools played their games. That is where I first saw Freddie Smith play!
If as CT pointed out Jack Hixon wasn’t our NE scout, mid 50s, I’d love to know who was.
Having found Pointer, Robson, Angus, Adamson(possibly a tad earlier), Buxton, etc.,

It was Charlie Ferguson, and one of the first players he brought to the Turf was John Angus from Amble in 1954.
