Jeff Hendrick's contract

Post by Quickenthetempo » Mon Jul 22, 2019 6:36 pm

Has there been any updates about it?

He's down to one year left after extending for one previously.

Most thought it was so we could sell him and get our money back, but he got in the team so I expected another extension.

Is he just running his contract down?

If he gets caught on the ball, like he did on Saturday, again there’ll be no new contract.
He was still on the beach, as was Tom Heaton.
And I know it was pre-season.

It was a really sloppy goal, but Hendrick has always been a liability in or around our box. Not a criticism, just a fact. I'm happy for him to play for us, just keep him away from our area.

He was only offered this extra year last season, so the hierarchy at the club must have some misgivings if that's all that was on the table then

The obvious question is: could we afford an adequate replacement given that we probably wouldn't get very much for him in his last contracted season?
I'd say keep if possible. The flak he gets might just persuade him to move on.

He's a useful squad player. Can play in at least 3 different positions competently, if not superbly.

He's like a more expensive and less well-liked (appreciated) version of Scott Arfield.

A useful player because of his versatility but he’s something of a jack of all trades, master of none.

What side in the PL/top half of the Championship would take him on current contract terms?

Well we if don't sign another midfielder we should certainly get him signed up, as we will be very light in midfeild if injuries come thick and fast.

I’m not “hardly able to wait to have a go at one of our players.”

Instead I’m suggesting that Hendrick is not at the level we need to be to develop.

The question remains who at our level, both in this league or in the Championship, how many would take him on current contract terms?

I await your reply with interest.

I've replied. I am of the opinion that half a dozen teams in the premier league, at least, would take Jeff Hendrick on his current contract terms. (caveat being I don't actually know his contract terms, but he signed 3 years ago so I would imagine them to be, by premier league standards, below average) I'd also say that one or two would improve his contract. I'm also saying, barring a 50% increase or above, that we should also extend his terms.

All about opinion mate but I can’t agree. The likes of Sheffield United and Norwich probably wouldn’t counter a 30k a week contract, even if they fancied him. Whilst Saints, Palace, Newcastle and Villa would surely pursue more ambitious targets. Top half of the PL absolutely no chance.

For me a squad player which I continue to support despite misgivings.

Fair play though for providing a response which I disagree with, but respect (unlike others).

If I was him I would politely tell us where to go and run his contract down and leave on a free. Some of the (very unwarranted) abuse he gets on social media by our fans is disgusting.

Not the most gifted player (definitely better than some will give him credit for) but never shys away or puts in less than 100% for us

I'd say that norwich and, to a lesser extent Sheff Utd, are handing out 30k a week contracts now. Almost certainly to new signings at least. Why would they not? A first XI on that money is barely a tenth of what they are guaranteed (guessing, but this season is worth around £120,000,000 to each club I think?) And that being the case, if, for instance, Newcastle wanted him they wouldn't think twice about paying £50,000 a week.

If we moved Jeff on for say £10m,we'd need 2 new CM'S,and that's not factoring in Defour's likely absences,to replace him would likely cost upwards of £15m,or a free agent on big wages,i'd give him another year,of course he and his agent might be looking for a longer contract, this was the problem with Scotty,we offered 2 years,Rangers offered 4 so obviously Scott choose the securer deal.

Seemed to be turning towards Brady at the end of last season. Suppose his crime was being a bit rusty after coming back from a serious injury.

Very similar to Scott Arfield then, who could do no wrong in the eyes of most people. Yet Hendrick seems to get grief no matter what he does.

I'm not saying it's right, but it's probably because Jeff Hendrick was a £10m, transfer record breaking signing; and Scott Arfield was a free transfer who Huddersfield didn't want.

Whilst I would say Hendrick is a better player than Arfield, the difference between the two is actually marginal. There's certainly not £10m worth of difference between their respective abilities.

Jeff Hendrick is a player who on his day is good enough to play at this level, he
May not hit those levels every game but I think he’s a good enough player to be

It’s a fair point and that’s where his value is to the team. Would I want him starting out wide or in the centre, no. By the same token though, I’ve been glad of his versatility.

I wasn’t up for us signing him but he always pops up with a wonder goal per season and last year he really started to make the right wing his own.

Was played out of position for what seemed like an eternity then we bought Vydra who has never been played in the hole.

Would renew Jeff’s contract just because we don’t seem to be able to identify many midfield targets that fit the bill.

A midfield 3 of Hendrick, Cork, & Westwood has a bit of all sorts and personally think is very strong for prem, it’s the issue playing 3 CMs that leave us struggling to fit others in like Barnes & Wood
Hendrick certainly has a part to play in a Burnley 25 man squad and should be signed up without to many questions been asked.
The midfielder that has the most questions to answer without doubt is defour with fitness.

I wouldn’t say no to extending his contract, versatile squad player who has been largely misused during a lot of his starting time for Burnley.

That being said, a player like Camarasa changes the situation, since he’s basically an upgraded version of Hendrick in terms of the positions he can operate in. Haven’t heard anything since last week on the front though, so may be irrelevant.

Check this out

https://www.transfermarkt.com/jeff-hend ... erein/1132" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Can anybody see the pattern?

Granted, the whole team was shocking before Christmas. During that time Hendrick was shuffled about along the centre line and given bit parts.

Come January and he is moved to right midfield, which allows him to cut in and support midfield, releasing Westwood at times and contributing to a more dynamic fluidity throughout the team.

All of a sudden we start racking up the wins and draws until late February when we suffer a bit of a dip. Coincidently this also corresponds to the emergence of the " cross to crouch hail Mary " tactic we started employing until an appendix saved us from it.

During that four match losing streak our Hendrick played CM against Newcastle ( Westwood was out with a cold if I remember ) and we lost. In the next match against Crystal Palace we dominated the first half, Hendrick came off and we got our ass handed to us on a plate in the second. The loss to Liverpool was to be expected. Hendrick is benched against Leicester and we lose again.

He is added back into the squad at RM and we start racking up the points again, before we enter the final three matches. A great performance against Man City, he plays a bit part against Everton and by the Arsenal match the deck chairs are out and everyone is coasting a bit.

A lot is made about the positive impact the return of Heaton had on our season ( rightly so ), along with the impressive performances of Dwight and Westwood in midfield. However, the contribution of Hendrick, which as usual went largely unnoticed, was in my opinion another major factor in our re-emergence.

He might not stand out as the obvious Golden Boy, but a lot of that is simply down to the fact that he is consistently working his nuts off to give everyone else the freedom to play their best game and look better. Nobody deserves the accolade of unsung hero and team player more than Hendrick.

There are going to be times when JBG or Lennon ( maybe even Brady ) will be better tactical options on the right, but Hendrick is a vital member of our squad and his versatility is hugely important.

As others have said he is one of those players whose true value and importance is only realised when he isn't on the pitch. When the chips are down we can rely on Hendrick to fight for every inch and give no less than 100%. Even in our pre Christmas matches he was giving everything he had and looked to be the only one that consistently showed true grit when other players were wavering a bit.

Definitely deserves a new contract, we are lucky to have him.
