Goodness the whole of Ireland will be cricket fans when they read the papers in the morning .
To be honest unreal from the Irish but the English cant be as bad again with the bat or can they ?

Re: Eng Vs Ire Test match
What would England need in the 2nd innings to be confident of victory,i'd say minimum 300 and even that would only leave Ireland 180 to win,to be sure of setting a challenging total 350-400 should be the ballpark, like you i'm not convinced this batting line-up has that many runs in them, unless the skipper pulls out a captain's knock,England could be staring down the barrel of their most humiliating test reverse,i know we lost to Bangladesh but that was in the UAE on a spinning track, not at the home of cricket, the only plus i can see is that it might force long overdue change in the management and coaching side,if defeat to Ireland who remember are playing only their 3rd test match doesn't force the issue then nothing will.LeadBelly wrote:I was down there today, it was very enjoyable apart from England's poor batting.
Tickets were about half price cf ashes tickets & I suspect there were some big concessions - given how many kids were there. There were a lot of Irish supporters and they fair enjoyed the morning. It's good to see a more varied (younger/family orientated) crowd there cf the usual beige chinos + blue shirt & blazer brigade.
Pitch was more than a bit green but the Irish bowlers made the best of it & English batsmen showed a considerable lack of application. It was odd when England bowled, not much happening at first then, after tea, bowlers were getting something.
The Yorkies who come on cricket threads will be quiet after that - Root + Bairstow 2 runs in total; then a low dropped catch from Root + one where the keeper couldnt be ***ed to move a foot to his right to take a catch.
Still - bookies make England favourites (presumably on the assumption that they cant bat so poorly again) but I'm not so sure.
Bloomin' hot down there today though, factor 50 for me and a couple of hour-long sessions round the back of the nursery end in the shade watching on the screen. Possibly a red face tomorrow.
Heck of a few days for Irish sport,Lowry's win at the Open, and rolling England over at Lord's before lunch.

Ashes for me without a doubt. Test cricket is still and will probably always be my preferred form of the game.Spijed wrote:Out of curiosity, what do people see as more important - winning the one day world cup or winning the Ashes series?

Re: Eng Vs Ire Test match
Just looking at Ladbrooks betting website: they see 375 as the most likely England score 2nd innings. That would leave Ireland wanting 250+ and the bookies dont see that happening & still see England as favourites. What would England need in the 2nd innings to be confident of victory,i'd say minimum 300 and even that would only leave Ireland 180 to win,to be sure of setting a challenging total 350-400 should be the ballpark, like you i'm not convinced this batting line-up has that many runs in them, unless the skipper pulls out a captain's knock,England could be staring down the barrel of their most humiliating test reverse
You can get 3/1 or even 10/3 on an Ireland win at this stage. Could all change in the first few overs tomorrow of course.

We haven’t been close to winning a World Cup in my lifetime whereas Ashes series come round every year or two. Definitely World Cup in this case.Spijed wrote:Out of curiosity, what do people see as more important - winning the one day world cup or winning the Ashes series?

If England are gonna get anywhere near 375,Joe's going to have to go big 150 or so,i can't see anyone else in that 11 playing a match-winning innings.LeadBelly wrote:Just looking at Ladbrooks betting website: they see 375 as the most likely England score 2nd innings. Given the match as it stands that's decent odds for Ireland, they can just go out tomorrow and enjoy themselves, indeed if Murtagh gets to work with the new ball again, the game could be over tomorrow.
The bookies have more faith in England's fragile top order than i have ATM,say by early afternoon England are around parity, but have lost 3/4 wickets those odds will surely change,as a bare minimum England need to be defending 200,and even then i'd have the game as 50/50,it doesn't matter who the opposition is,if you get rolled over for 85 on the 1st morning,it's bloody hard to win test matches, and England haven't got their 1st choice bowling attack, what the WC and today showed,is how vital Ben Stokes is to this team, how often has he come in at 4 down for less than a hundred and rescued the innings, and his bowling is a great weapon also,Sam Curran's actually been one of England's best performers on day one,but he''s no Stokes.

Re: Eng Vs Ire Test match
Ireland had a great day, but they had the luck of the Irish as well.
They took advantage of the green wicket that has now changed colour. They were the ideal pace for the ball to travel through stump high rather than go over and they could afford to have the slips close so the edges carried.
Once the new ball has gone it should be fill your boots time. Just need the top order batsman in against their 3rd 4th and 5th choice bowlers.

England were about 10/11 at one point today. That would have been the bet to take. I think it was just before the Irish 3rd wicket. One for the big gamblers on here....

Quiet start this morning 21-0
Leach is hanging in there as nightwatchman 13 off 10 overs. Another 5 overs to get through then it would be a good time for Roy to come in.
Burns technique looks awful.

Burns nicks one behind
Leach on 18no could soon be England's highest run scorer of the game.

I was just about to agree with you and, as I was logging in, Burns was out! Very poor technnique, however, full credit to the Irish lads who have bowled very well again this morning with very little loose stuff.Quickenthetempo wrote:Quiet start this morning 21-0

One of my major criticisms of English bowling is that we deliver too many balls which batsmen don't have to bother about!

Not just England, the whole cricket world are obsessed with 90 mph bang it in bowlers.Buxtonclaret wrote:Afraid we've been guilty of that, at Test level, for a while now.
For these bowlers to hit the wickets they have to bowl half volley length, which can be expensive.
The problem for me is when we pick bang it in bowlers and ask them to bowl full. Just pick bowlers with the natural length you want.

I'm not really a stickler for batting techniques but whichever way you choose to play the bat has to come down straight with the full face, adapting at the last second if you wish to work the ball.

Leach could pass England's entire 1st innings score at this rate, puts yesterday morning into perspective,England have to press home this advantage now.
I don't think Leach would have expected to still be batting at 1PM.

Maiden Test 50 for Roy

Re: Eng Vs Ire Test match
155-1 at drinks,Leach just dropped on 72,Roy catching him up on 70,do you get the feeling it's going to be one of those days for Leach.
And the beauty is he's playing proper cricket shots, this is not tail-end slogging.
Still doesn't excuse that pitiful display yesterday from England's batsman, even in the testing conditions, fortunately for them it looks like they're going to get away with it.
Can't be many test matches in recent years where a team batting first have been skittled for under a 100,and still went on to win the game.

Root definitely needing a good innings here after: not seemingly getting his team into test match mode on the morning of day1; getting out for 2 runs in the first innings, running out Denly (100% guilty). He needs to get 50 here to even get his balance into the black.

Re: Eng Vs Ire Test match
Yet another middle-order collapse from England,a penny for Jack Leech's thoughts at tea.
There has got to be changes for the 1st Ashes test,Bairstow can't play at Edgbaston surely after 2 ducks.
In fact Johnny's form hasn't been good for quite a few test matches now,his Ashes place must be under threat from Buttler.
Burns failed twice and looked a rabbit in the headlights,Starc and co will have him for breakfast, who opens alongside Roy heaven knows.
Got to feel for Denly he top-scored in the 1st innings, and then just when he's got a start, his captain runs him out.
Game very much in the balance again, lead of 87 but only 5 wickets in hand, crucial session coming up after tea,Root and Mo have to knuckle down and build a big partnership

Re: Eng Vs Ire Test match
I'd bring back Foakes who is our best wicketkeeper by far to bat at 7 and either drop Bairstow or bat him at 3. Foakes came in and didn't put a foot wrong but was seemingly dropped because Bairstow spat his dummy out. Apart from a century out in Sri Lanka I can't recall him contributing any runs to the Test side for a while now.tiger76 wrote:Yet another middle-order collapse from England,a penny for Jack Leech's thoughts at tea.

Just commented about the same thing. Ridiculous the way they've pandered to Bairstow recently. He should have been told Foakes is by far a better wicket keeper and that's that. He's not even contributing with the bat to make up for his inferior wicket keeping. Maybe they didn't want to upset a key member of the one day side in the run up to the World Cup?ClaretTony wrote:You can't leave Bairstow out - he'll have one of his tantrums

They should be even more embarrassed after their showing in the second innings. I did say yesterday that it was good to see our batsmen making hay while the sun shone and Moeen certainly looked as though he was hay making with that shot and now Root has also shown how not to do it.jrgbfc wrote:Hope the likes of Bairstow and Mooen Ali are suitably embarrassed watching Leach get his 50 after some of their recent efforts.

302-9 lead of 180
If it was the 5th day I would say England should win easy, but it's the 2nd day and the pitch is good.
But Ireland aren't a fit side like modern day teams are so a day fielding in the sun could work against them if the have to face 8 overs tonight.
Off for lightening now

Re: Eng Vs Ire Test match
Useful runs these from Broad, every one counts,i know this isn't England's first XI,but even so this has been a shambles whatever the end result, essentially the nightwatchman has saved the supposed top-level players.
Time for a major shake-up,far too many of this team are picked on reputation, some butts need kicking, and i don't care if noses are put out of joint(yes you Mr Bairstow).
The only players who can be happy with their performances in this test are Leech,Roy 2nd dig,Broad and Stone who took vital wickets, and Sam Curran who scored useful lower-order runs and bowled well in the 1st innings, the rest should be embarrassed.
Looks like that might be play for the day,now that the expected storm has arrived,England 181 ahead with the last pair at the crease,i wouldn't like to predict this.
