Eng Vs Ire Test match
Lords is full of sunshine but the ground staff have left a bit of grass on top to make sure the pitch lasts 4 days.
Ireland have made a good start getting Roy out twice, with the first anl LBW off a no ball.
21-1 now.

Plenty of movement for these bowlers, who although only bowl at speeds of 75 to 80mph. Make you play at everything.
31-1 off 8 overs.

Not one of the England batsmen has looked even remotely comfortable against this attack. Ireland look like taking a wicket with every single delivery. Lucky to reach 100 at this rate.

Not surprised in the slightest.
Below average side for years, massive overhaul required of the whole red ball set up after we have been thumped in The Ashes.

Hopefully this is just a World Cup hangover getting out of our system... but I fear it’s more than that *gulp*.

It would of been easier facing the Aussie attack as 5 out of 6 balls would be going over the top of the stumps at their pace.

As long as England can get Ireland out for 150 I don't think there will be too much damage done in the match.

Re: Eng Vs Ire Test match
Only England could get decimated by an Englishman playing for Ireland, at the home of cricket, that just so happens to be the blokes county home ground...
The wicket looked like it was at Towneley tbf... I'm not so sure about Lords; our win % there is abysmal compared to say Old Trafford and Edgbaston and we play a lot of the opening tests at Lords.. Getting off to a bad start!
The Aussies will be wetting themselves laughing

Re: Eng Vs Ire Test match
Definitely a mixture of absolutely brilliant bowling and poor batting. Well played Ireland, absolutely fantastic stuff.
In fairness to England most of the team have been playing a very different style of cricket for the last 2 months and it can take time to adjust. That said they are definitely missing an Alistair Cook/Mike Atherton type player to open and see off the new ball. If you don’t see off a new ball on that sort of pitch you can get the perfect storm with the later batsmen still in one day mode.

Re: Eng Vs Ire Test match
Shocking performance by England, but it's not a surprise anymore, these modern players can't adapt to TM cricket.they want to clatter every ball for 4.
Ireland bowled well but until they bat we can't be sure it's a aberration by England's batsman or a dodgy track.
These collapses are not new in recent years though.
England did not lose 10 wickets in a session between 1938 and 2016. They have done this 4 times in their last 34 Tests:
v Ban Mirpur 2016
v NZ Auckland 2018
v Ind Nottingham 2018
v Ire Lord's 2019
Apart from Root no-one has the mentality to grind an innings out, very worrying with the Ashes round the corner.
What the heck does Graham Thorpe coach in the nets,it's clearly not a forward defensive.
Denly top scored with 23 that sums the whole sorry innings up for me.

Re: Eng Vs Ire Test match
The Test side have been going backwards for a few years now. I know Bayliss was brought in to concentrate on the one day game so after the World Cup win you could argue he's done his job, but the Test side badly needs a new man at the helm.

The Yorkshire lads are having a nightmare.
Root decides to bat first and picks two spinners. Low score and a drop catch so far.
Bairstow duck and just let's a catch go past him without moving.

The lad Foakes at Surrey is the best wicketkeeper we have by far but seems like we dropped him after Bairstow spat his dummy out because they took the gloves off him.Quickenthetempo wrote:The Yorkshire lads are having a nightmare.

They struggle to get 90 overs in so not sure what the plan is really. Are they going to let them play past 6.30, which I think is the usual cut off time?

Re: Eng Vs Ire Test match
Ireland 207 all out at the close,England even sent a nightwatchman out to see off 1 over, lead of 122 is more useful on this wicket,a couple of England's top order will have to go big 2nd dig, ideally a hundred or more, beyond Root i can't see who's capable though, good test of the newbies character this situation,we'll see what they're made off,Ireland's top 5 all made double figures,so clearly the pitch isn't the minefield it appeared when England were batting in the morning session.
What the hell possessed Joe to bat first beats me,you do wonder if England were complacent,if that was the case then they've been given a harsh lesson in test cricket, yes Buttler and Stokes are being rested, plus Archer,Wood and Jimmy are all injured, but there should have been enough in England's batting line-up to amass a decent score,as Ireland managed to do,even on a green track,Sam Curran came in at NR 8 for goodness sake.
Just for comparison Kevin O'Brien finished 28 NO,and stayed at the crease for over 2 hours,3 of the Irish top 4 batted for over an hour, and the other batter close to an hour, that's proper test match application,England could learn a thing or two from this discipline, you'll never score runs in the dressing room.
England's Longest innings was Rory Burns at 52 minutes,is it any wonder England are behind the 8 ball in this test.
We can only hope this is a one-off and once the Ashes commence,England discover some batting form, but judging this effort that looks a forlorn hope.

Re: Eng Vs Ire Test match
In the chase for World Cup white ball slogging, we have forgotten how to play 4 day cricket and build an innings. The standard in county cricket is very low yet Yorkshire can easily slog 255 off 20 overs. None of their batters are however of test standard.

You’d be quite happy bowling a side out for 207 on the first day of a test.
If you’d not already been rolled for eighty-effing-five.

Out of curiosity, what do people see as more important - winning the one day world cup or winning the Ashes series?

Re: Eng Vs Ire Test match
I was down there today, it was very enjoyable apart from England's poor batting.
Tickets were about half price cf ashes tickets & I suspect there were some big concessions - given how many kids were there. There were a lot of Irish supporters and they fair enjoyed the morning. It's good to see a more varied (younger/family orientated) crowd there cf the usual beige chinos + blue shirt & blazer brigade.
Pitch was more than a bit green but the Irish bowlers made the best of it & English batsmen showed a considerable lack of application. It was odd when England bowled, not much happening at first then, after tea, bowlers were getting something.
The Yorkies who come on cricket threads will be quiet after that - Root + Bairstow 2 runs in total; then a low dropped catch from Root + one where the keeper couldnt be ***ed to move a foot to his right to take a catch.
Still - bookies make England favourites (presumably on the assumption that they cant bat so poorly again) but I'm not so sure.
Bloomin' hot down there today though, factor 50 for me and a couple of hour-long sessions round the back of the nursery end in the shade watching on the screen. Possibly a red face tomorrow.
