I knew John well before he turned pro. Top guy and great that he's involved locally in football ...if your reading this John, 'Mick would be proud of you'.

I only got to know him when he was working in the youth department - he disappeared not long after the Blake appointment. On a personal level, he was a really good bloke to get on with.
I'd once been told that he developed his pace so he'd be able to catch his first touch.

Whilst his first touch wasn't the best, with his 2nd touch the ball was often in the back of the net.ClaretTony wrote:I only got to know him when he was working in the youth department - he disappeared not long after the Blake appointment. Loved John Francis, the only Burnley player I ever saw that could trap a football further than he could kick it.
His sprint power was explosive though.

Only met him once outside heaven and hell in Leeds in the early hours of the morning. Was a top bloke and very humble in dealing with my chanting super Jonny , hugging, kissing and bowing at his feet. Everyone else (bar my claret mate) were completely bemused but I didn’t care one jot... one of my favourite Burnley players.

He was one of the shining lights on our way back up from the doldrums. Very effective at what he was good at, always put a shift in.

Always worth another watch, his finest moment for me and a great day out. You couldn't have scripted it better.

Very popular player at the time. We knew his first touch was awful but we just laughed with him, not at him
