Clarets Players Careers Ruined By Injury
Following on from Bin Ont Turf's thread about Steve Gardner, there must be a lot of our players
who would have gone on to better things if not for injury.
Frank Casper, of course, was done by that b@stard Hunter.
And Peter Mellor, I think, would have been a really good keeper if not for his shoulder/arm injury.
But there must be more....

Re: Clarets Players Careers Ruined By Injury
Steve Kennedy - injured at Hull in Feb 1985, described by Jimmy Holland as horrific. He'd made his debut just about a year earlier and looked really promising. He came back two seasons later, played three games and that was it for him. He was only 19 when he suffered the injury.
Ashley Hoskin had just got into the team when John Sitton broke his leg in the first minute. He played for a good number of years after that but I think he'd have been a far better player without the injury.

Paul Smith & Paul Weller
There’s been quite a few at Burnley over the years Casper never recovered, I went to the races with him 4-5 years ago, great bloke when you get to know him, he has never forgiven (was it Norman Hunter) for the tackle, he still expresses absolute disgust

And Hoskins goal at PNE in the Sherpa.
Incredible celebrations when that went in.

Kevin Reeves. Without his injury history regarding John Bond would prob have been very different.

I'm absolutely sure it would have been. The way we were playing at the time, I remain convinced we'd have gone up that season. We had started to murder teams.andyh wrote:Kevin Reeves. Without his injury history regarding John Bond would prob have been very different.

Undoubtedly you have to add Willie Irvine to this list. Goodness knows how his career would have gone but for the broken leg at Everton when he was just 23.

I was once at a sportsmans dinner where Paul Fletcher was guest speaker, and I asked him about the Hunter "tackle".
He said it was a dreadful challenge and NH was "a nasty piece of work".
Couldn't agree more.

Yet we all laugh at Kevin Ball, myself included, that could have been a shocker
The Keane one, whilst sort of understandable given the history, was horrible

And of course Frank's son Chris suffered similarly while playing for Reading on Boxing Day 1999. He went to sue Richard Carpenter (then Cardiff) who eventually settled out of court with Chris getting £1 million compensation.Burnley1989 wrote:Quiet bloke but after a few beers with him, he opened up to my 100 questions, really interesting bloke.

B. Berisha
Charlie Austen- sure he would have been an England regular were it not for his glass shoulder/knee/ankle

Alan Moore seemed to get injury after injury and that's what seemed to lead to his serious problems with depression.Vintage Claret wrote:Alan Moore

Bes Berisha - saw him play for Albania on the Turf and he looked special. Played really well in the last pre-season game in Austria 2007 and was very close to getting in the team for the first game. Made the bench at Grimsby in the League Cup but then went on international duty and came back with the cruciate.
What bit I saw of him before we signed him, I thought we'd got a very good player. I never saw him play again, wasn't even allowed to train with the first team when he came back from injury.

Danny Coyne.
Looked on the face of it like a fantastic signing for £25,000 by Cotterill as he had a great record in the Championship for Grimsby. Only played a few months and then did his knee, never really played again. Could have been our Number 1 for years possibly.
Amazing how many careers an ACL has ruined, good thing I am not a professional footballer (got reconstructive surgery booked for the 9th August for my ACL that I ruptured just after Easter ).

Coyne got that knee injury at QPR but he came back and then did his cruciate against Brighton on the Turf in the following season. He looked nothing like when he came back from that one.jedi_master wrote:Danny Coyne.

Danny Inga.
Time will tell if Danny gets his career back on track.
For a young man he has a terrible run of injuries
He would have been a cert for regular call ups for England with a better record re injuries
Hopefully he will miss the opener v Burnley

He was starting to look like a top flight central midfielder before his lengthy knee injury. He was only 22 at that point. He wasn’t the same player afterwards.

I was once at a sportsman's dinner at The Keirby where Hunter was one of the speakers. He walked into the bogs at the interval and a couple of Clarets were giving him grief over that tackle. Their comments made Paul Fletcher's the epitomy of diplomacy. I think the parting shot was "What you doing here any way, you're no f-ing sportsman"
