I liked him. A few moments of genius.Papabendi wrote:A real talent and a cut above often for us
He would never get near a Dyche team. Always struck me as someone who was thick as treacle... positioning, tactical awareness, decision making... all really pretty poor.
Seem to remember reading he had some personal difficulties at some stage, that has maybe had a detrimental effect on his career?
Definitely not one I’d look back on either overly fondly or with disdain. Was decent enough for us and I wish him well.

Re: ARTICLE: Eagles flies into Boundary Park
My favourite memory is Derby away under Howe where we won 4-2 and for long periods, especially second half he was unplayable.
I also remember him on the Turf playing for Sheffield Wednesday. A loan from United and he looked an incredible prospect.
Sadly failed to fill his real potential but still wish him all the best even in such a barm pot of a club.

I've got more stamina than he has.
And I would have hit the underside of the crossbar and bounce it in at Coventry, to make it look a better goal.

Re: ARTICLE: Eagles flies into Boundary Park
He always reminded me of someone who was legend in his own bathroom, probably because of his upbringing at Utd, but even so, he did have some good games for us, even if he too often flattered to deceive. I think he gave us his all for a while and we probably got him just about at his best, whatever you think that was. I too hope he does well. My clearest memory was him doing brilliantly and then hitting the inside of the post late on at home v Arsenal in our first PL foray. It would have made a superb and deserved winner and somehow kind of sums him up in a nutshell.

Simply outstanding that day and the away game at Sheffield United in the promotion season stands out too. Just nowhere near enough of those games unfortunately.John Johnson 1605 wrote:My favourite memory is Derby away under Howe where we won 4-2 and for long periods, especially second half he was unplayable.

Re: ARTICLE: Eagles flies into Boundary Park
Ten years on and memories sometimes become a little foggy, but my mate (who sits next to me) and I always had a little wager when Eagles was through one on one with the opposing goalie.
He always scored.
Anyone care to prove me wrong?
He was something of a maverick and it was fun while it lasted.
Albeit all to briefly.

The player a lot of fans couldn't take to with his long hair and standing out a mile from the rest ability wise.
If you can perform like he did at his best, every week, then you play for Real Madrid not Burnley.

Re: ARTICLE: Eagles flies into Boundary Park
He was a very exciting signing at the time and had some great games at home too. The game v Norwich stands out during the Coyle season. It was the featured game on the Championship highlights, he scored both in a 2-0 win. Tbf he had a good spell under Laws too when we were strong at home, for a while at least.

Re: ARTICLE: Eagles flies into Boundary Park
There was one moment in a game at home (cant remember who against) where he played a Rabona pass from the wing. There was no other way to lay off the ball to keep the flow of the move going and he executed it perfectly.

Bristol City away in the promotion season was another brilliant performance, especially in the second half. Him and Paterson ran them ragged.

Re: ARTICLE: Eagles flies into Boundary Park
We were minutes from our first proper Wembley final in years when he lost the ball around the half way touchline and allowed Spurs to get the breakaway goal that knocked us out. He should have hoofed the ball as far as he could but his fancy Dan tactics got us knocked out -- at least that's how I remember it.

Re: ARTICLE: Eagles flies into Boundary Park
In fairness, he was dead on his feet by that point. He could barely kick it. Stamina, or lack of it, was his Achilles Heel, for me.Hendrickxz wrote:We were minutes from our first proper Wembley final in years when he lost the ball around the half way touchline and allowed Spurs to get the breakaway goal that knocked us out. He suffered from asthma and he’s been through some family issues recently, but I’ve never grasped why he hasn’t settled into clubs since leaving Bolton.
He was popular at Port Vale I believe though

Wasn’t it Akinbiyi who lost the ball?Hendrickxz wrote:We were minutes from our first proper Wembley final in years when he lost the ball around the half way touchline and allowed Spurs to get the breakaway goal that knocked us out. At times, he was sensational.
