Root onto 53, Burns on 75. 148-1.

Lets see if Root can take it all the way to 100.

Certainly not been a typical Root innings and that’s no bad thing.

Burns needs to tough this spell out, get to tea and refocus.

And Root out for 57... Stayed in, got us to 154/2 set up nicely.

Root gone for 57,yet again he doesn't convert, need to get through to tea just 2 down, and then dig in again after the break.

I knew Siddle would be effective in these conditions,he doesn't give you many freebies either, just nags away and waits for a mistake.Great catch BTW.

What stops Root from being a really top batsman?

Is it just his mentality?

He averages a fraction less than 50.

42 half centuries at 1 in 3 and a half innings.
16 centuries at 1 in 9 innings.

You have high standards.

Denly out LBW

How the umpires found a 60 over ball in the box that swung is anyones guess.

The cheating Aussies have been whining about the ball all day, wonder where they're hiding the sandpaper ;)

Less than a hundred behind now and still 7 wickets in the hutch, what kind of lead, assuming England do get a lead would you looking for,my minimum would be a 100,If England have to chase 150 or more batting 4th,Lyon would give me nightmares,he's getting prodigious amount's of spin on only day 2,Warne like turn even.

This ball is definitely talking England have to see this half hour or so out and weather the storm.

It's not like there's been any recent ball-tampering scandal's in recent Australian cricketing history after all.

Yes but the important thing is he's still there,he just has to remain calm and wait for a bad ball,he'll get one eventually.

Watch a bit of the cricket this aft and this England team dont look a patch on the team that won the World Cup last month. All they do is tip tap it about and block half the balls. If they dont improve id get a few of the World Cup winners back in for the next match

Ton for Burns. He was on 92 for 37 mins, got to 99 and took 10 balls to get the next run with the Aussies ridiculously appealing for a run out.

Can anyone explain how it came about that the in form Stokes dropped to 6 in the order?
Whatever the logic, it clearly didn't work. (Well not for Buttler anyway!)

Educate me plz. A ball went off Burns box for four byes but was called a dead ball. Was it because he had shouldered arms?

They weren’t byes, would have been leg byes which you can’t have if you haven’t offered a shot.

The MCC at Lords have a huge say in English cricket.

And they're not keen on football style atmosphere.

Superb knock by Burns. He was under some serious pressure and nothing tests your technique etc like the ashes. Get to 350+ and we'll be in the box seat.

Definitely our day but the slow scoring means the game is still very much in the balance. Fresh bowlers in the morning with a 10-over old ball; if things don’t go our way we could easily be 7 down before the scores are level.

Hopefully we can negotiate the first hour without alarm and then take the game away from them.

The scoring was slow, but i'd rather England played sensible test match cricket, and ended up 4 down at stumps, than go crash, bang, wallop and be all out for 250.

Big first hour tomorrow if we can emerge with at most one more wicket down, this gives the middle/lower order a great chance of getting past 400.

Also the longer we can bat the more time to recharge the batteries for the bowlers, ideally we'd bat until just after tea tomorrow, and then get a couple of hours at their top order,if we could get Smith early they might fall like dominoes.

Fantastic effort by Rory Burns he's batted for nearly 7 hours, just hope there's something left in the tank tomorrow,i liked his interview he was clear the job's only half done, and he's absolutely correct.

Ben Stokes played really well in the final session,he came to the crease at a difficult time, and once again showed his maturity, this partnership has England on top,but there's plenty of cricket left in this game yet.

England are way on top at the minute and have the big bonus of Lyon bowling a lot of overs for no wickets. Hopefully he goes for over a hundred without any wickets to break his confidence.

He is the lynch pin bowler that will keep them together while they insist on a 4 man attack. If he's under pressure the seam bowlers will get over used.

Good point about the 4 man attack, another reason why England need to keep them in the field as long as possible, the turnaround's are really quick in this series,of course they have reinforcements to call on by the names of Hazlewood and Starc if needed.

Sorry don't agree. Don't forget that we have to bat last on a pitch that's already turning quite a bit and keeping low. We really need to get 1st innings lead of 150 before we can say we're way on top, and a score of over 400 is quite a long way off as yet.
This pre-lunch session today is really important. If we get bowled out then it's advantage Australia I think - especially if we're a bowler short as the Aussies seek to build a winning score.
Wouldn't fancy us chasing much over 150. If we post over 400, then we can claim to be on top - not till then.

Just checked - average score for the 4th innings at Edgbaston is 156.

Agreed, we've got to play like every run is precious and try and get at least a ton lead before we begin to think we're ahead of the game; we are a bowler down and Broad/Woakes need time with their feet up.
I hope Burns can crack on but it often happens that people who have battled really well through a day cant get the same level of concentration the next day (hope Im wrong though).
Still a fair bit of batting left and Jonny B is due a knock (hopefully Michael Vaughan has wound him up).
The bookies are seeing c 425 as the likely score from here, I really hope we can get to that.

Only a Burnley and England cricket fan can be this pessimistic. We trail by 9 runs with 6 wickets left.
One batter on 126no and the other 45no

Sure things can change but at this moment in time there's a good chance we won't have to bat again.

Absolutely. Talk of us being bowled out before lunch is crazy. Of course, it could happen. But it would take a disastrous collapse. The game is far from won but we are comfortably in the driving seat. Should be a good day’s play.

One batter on 126no and the other 45no

Sure things can change but at this moment in time there's a good chance we won't have to bat again.
Either pessimist or maybe someone who studies history and analyses stats.
I always tend to apply the formula that I've heard Boycott use on the radio - irrespective of whether we're batting or bowling. i.e. add 2 wickets onto the score then look at where we are.
As I type this, the scores are just about level and if you add on the 2 wickets it would mean that we have just 3 wickets left, one of them being Anderson and another being Broad, who one would think would struggle against the pace of Cummins and Pattinson.
The other's Moeen, and who can predict what he will do?
To balance things I'm currently more optimistic than pessimistic, but to say that we're way ahead as some people suggest flies in the face of previous Ashes series. There'll still be twists and turns in this match and I very much doubt this will be an easy victory. It will have to be hard won.
