Free Transfers
Just seen Phil Bird describe Tom Heaton as our "best ever free transfer" - difficult to argue against but got me wondering if anybody believes others that rival or beat him?
Re: Free Transfers
I'm sure that the Tom Heaton - David Jones - Scott Arfield combo can't be beaten for a set of three arriving together, anywhere in the history of the game. But of the three, Heaton has to reperesent best value because he played most games and we got a fee at the end.
Martin Dobson was free as well, wasn't he? Released by Bolton?

Re: Free Transfers
Could Andy Payton be described as free as we didn't pay a fee for him (swap deal wasn't it?)? If so could argue we would have been a lot lower down the leagues without that one

Re: Free Transfers
Keith Newton was the best free transfer IMO.

Re: Free Transfers
Hard to argue against that .Newton was a cracking full back despite starting his career with the Rovers..ashtonlongsider wrote:Keith Newton was the best free transfer IMO.
Played 27 times for England and passed away at the relatively young age of 56.

Keith Newton was one of the best full backs we've ever had.

Re: Free Transfers
Free transfer. 2 promotions. Kept us up. Made us 9m transfer fee. Don’t think anyone can top that. Not in the modern era for us.

Re: Free Transfers
Dobbo was a proper free transfer, I.e. having no club rather than Tom’s case when he left Bristol City by choice at the end of his contract.dsr wrote:Martin Dobson was free as well, wasn't he? Released by Bolton?

I don't have the list of every free transfer that has happened in the whole history of the game to hand. If you could send me the list I'll have a look and see if I can find some better ones.dsr wrote:Name a better three-freesome.

If you can’t name 3 then withdraw your previous comment. His point was 3 free transfers that arrived at the same time and he wins.Devils_Advocate wrote:I don't have the list of every free transfer that has happened in the whole history of the game to hand. Newton, Dobson and Heaton cannot be separated for me because all did wonderous jobs at different times in different circumstances

Re: Free Transfers
Nope his point was that the three transfers together were the best in the whole history of football. How can you make that claim when you have no idea of all the times clubs have made three free transfers and what impact those transfers had on their respective clubs.Tricky Trevor wrote:If you can’t name 3 then withdraw your previous comment. The claim was ludicrous and fanciful.

Re: Free Transfers
Not really. How many clubs, at our level, even bother with free transfers. To pick up 3, in one window, who make such an impact is extraordinary.Devils_Advocate wrote:The claim was ludicrous and fanciful.
Re: Free Transfers
Juve have signed:dsr wrote:Name a better three-freesome.
Ramsey
Rabiot
Buffon
All on free transfers this window.

Re: Free Transfers
Yep this I can fully agree with that and all I did was take the p*ss about your hyperbole so you should have just left it at that.dsr wrote:God forbid that anyone should be hyperbolic on a football forum.
Just to add though you are quite pedantic and picky around this kind of thing so maybe remember this next time someone goes over the top a bit with a viewpoint you don't agree with
