ARTICLE: Fifty years ago today – a new look Turf Moor

Post by ClaretTony » Fri Aug 02, 2019 9:21 am

It's half a century old today - the oldest stand at the Turf was officially opened on this date in 1969

When Everton eventually move to their new stadium, if we are still in the Premier League at that point, will the Cricket Field Stand be the oldest in the Top Flight?

I suspect the Arthur Waite stand at Palace will be older but other than that I can't think of one.

I would think the main stand at Selhurst Park is older

That too, but likely to be gone by the time Everton move which would just leave the stand opposite where we go.

I'm hazarding a guess here but what about Bournemouth? Just a thought. And what about parts of either Sheff Utd or Villa? I genuinely don't know but have both of these grounds been completely re-built in that time?

On the CFS I remember standing on the old Bee Hole End for my first game at the Turf and looking across at the then under construction CFS and thinking 'that looks good'. How times change eh?

Bournemouth’s Dean Court/Vitality Stadium has not only been completely rebuilt, but turned 90 degrees on it’s axis.

Used to sit in there in 1986 and it looked fairly old and run down then.

Having said that, I enjoy a rare visit to the Bob Lord stand now and again - still the best seats in football, and feels more historic - rather than just decaying.

Wasn't this around the same time Barnfield started their work on the two corner stands?

He was, by a national journalist who penned those words about him after his performance in Naples. A few years ago, in the ‘on this day’ feature in our match programme they called him a cod in a green jersey.

Only ever seen that it was for a disciplinary matter. Two years later he was sacked by Blackpool and then, I think by Barrow one year after that.

I don’t know whether my memory is playing tricks but I’m sure he set the stand on fire at Barrow.

Harry did the half time draw during the years Stan was manager. He was asked who his mates were at Burnley and he said you could split the team in two, those who did like a drink and those who didn’t. Asked which players were in his drinking group he refused to say but suggested there might be one in the dug out that afternoon.

I saw the headline and as you do thought wow 50 years ago, I wonder what life was like back then. Then I realised that I was already 15 years old.

I remember coming home on the train from some of our London games. Those days the players and the likes of the Man Utd team also used the train to get back to Manchester. The fans used to mingle with our and other teams players. Dennis Law ( The King) was always good to chat with. If he went to the toilet we used to chant "The King is on the Throne".
I heard Harry say to a young lady Burnley fan, who he got into a conversation with, "lie down I want to talk to you". We knew what he meant and so did she and she soon moved on.
Harry sadly hadn't a good life after football and wasn't in good health for a long time.

There was a massive billboard advert by the Manchester Road roundabout advertising the new stand promising warm air, ducted under the seats, heating in the new stand.

Bournemouth have a brand new ground, the old Dean Court is long gone. They played some home games at Dorchester while the new one was completed. I did think of Sheffield United and Villa. Not sure maybe the Bramall Lane end at Sheff U, but the other three sides are definitely newer.

How old is the main stand at Old Trafford ? ( I know it has been greatly modernised and upgraded over the years )

Interesting about Bournemouth playing at Dorchester, I have actually been there and it is a very nice (and surprisingly big) ground. I can remember the old 3 sided Bramhall lane with an excellent view of the cricket ground. I'm thinking the Holt end at Villa park but I haven't been there since a league cup tie in the 70s so I'm unsure. The main thing I always remember was the main facade as you approached the ground, it was magnificent, like walking up to a stately home. Villa Park was one of my favourite grounds - something about it said 'quality'.
