Your starting line up next week
So now the final pre-season game has been played, curious to see what people think will be the starting line up next week. Of course Tarkowski could go, Brady might be injured and we might make a signing or two, but as of right now, what would your starting eleven be?
Mine would be:
Pope
Lowton
Taylor
Tarkowski
Mee
Lennon
Hendrick
Westwood
McNeil
Rodriguez
Wood

We aren’t going to sign anyone are we?
So same as FCBurnley but I think you have to start with Jay Rod. And I’d go for him instead of Barnes.

Re: Your starting line up next week
If Tarky is still here then he obviously starts but if not and also Long has gone, on today's viewing I dint think Gibson worked with Mee, and Dunne looked a lot more of a better fit. I was also impressed with Wells and Benson today in their outing. Lennon played well and still has that speed but he did this when he joined us and faded quickly, I hope he is different this season. I think Wood and Jayrod is a tough call, Wood obviously is a natural goal scorer and is currently finding the net well, where as Jayrod also has an eye for goal but works a lot harder for the team. I would love to see Barnes and Wood up front With Jayrod in the hole, but its never going to happen.

Re: Your starting line up next week
Certainly a nice problem to have regarding who will partner Wood between Jay and Barnes.
I'd go:
Pope
Lowton Tarky Mee Taylor
JBG Hendrick Westwood McNeil
Jay Wood
Definitely 4-4-2.

Re: Your starting line up next week
Personally I'd start with Wood and Barnes and use Jay as an impact sub - imagine having to deal with the physical menace of Ash for 60/70 minutes and the having to make the mental adjustment (when tired) of dealing with an intelligent player like JayRod.
It's all about having options and being able to change things and with the squad as it stands we have that. Interesting to note from today Wells as the 4th striker - Vydra to Leeds seems highly likely - and the emergence of Benson, who if for whatever reason we don't sign anyone, will become the 4th CM so will be on the bench v Southampton.
If Tarkowski does go then I'd very much like to see Cahill here with Mee/Gibson to compete for the left-sided berth

Re: Your starting line up next week
Players often up a gear when facing a former team, and Jay has been better pre-season. It won't surprise me at all if it's Jay and Wood, but I guess that's the least of our worries.EarbyClaret wrote:Personally I'd start with Wood and Barnes and use Jay as an impact sub - imagine having to deal with the physical menace of Ash for 60/70 minutes and the having to make the mental adjustment (when tired) of dealing with an intelligent player like JayRod.

Re: Your starting line up next week
I see most opting for Wood and Jay Rod up front. I know Barnes hasn't scored much this preseason but today as soon as he came on Jay Rod looked a different player. The way Barnes bullied there centre halves meant Jay Rod was able to find little pockets of space as they were too busy trying to handle Wood. The first half I struggled to see what Jay Rod did as Wood didn't seem to have much impact on their centre halves.
Nice problem to have

Re: Your starting line up next week
Seriously you felt Gibson and Mee didn't fit? and Dunne who lost possession within 5 mins which nearly led to a goal looked better. I must have been at a different match. I thought Gibson looked solid and accomplished and dare I say it a better passer of the ball than Tarks bar one misplaced 50 yarder. Not saying Dunne wont play for us one day but he is still at least 12 months away and needs a season in the championship or around this squad properlyClaretAL wrote:If Tarky is still here then he obviously starts but if not and also Long has gone, on today's viewing I dint think Gibson worked with Mee, and Dunne looked a lot more of a better fit. Agree with Barnes and Jay Rod up front though. I know Wood has been on fire this preseason but in this last game I just felt the Barnes Jay Rod partnership looked much better

Re: Your starting line up next week
I haven't seen any of the pre-season games, so perhaps it's a bit unfair to comment, but I find it strange that some people do not want Wood in the starting line up, and even more crazy that one or two are going for Lennon as a starter.

Re: Your starting line up next week
You can't be leaving out either Rodders or Wood on form. But out of Wood, Rodders and Barnes I think that the least effective partnership is/would be Rodders and Wood.
I think that the team will be as post 17 MDWat (if Cork is reyt).

Not sure if Barnes as even scored pre season so Jay for me.
Seems to start every season quiet does Barnes and then gets going.

Barnes looked very sharp when he came on. Jay will really need to up his game if he is to knock Barny of his perch

Re: Your starting line up next week
Lennon has looked sharp and raring to go, but his final ball is shocking.
The first goal today, his ball was going nowhere until it took a deflection. But to be fair, we don't have anyone else who can beat a defender with pace like that.
Guddy for me, for his delivery and getting into the middle sometimes supporting the forwards.

The most worrying thing about that lineup is that not only could it have started the first game last season, McNeil aside most of it could have started most of the season before.
Consistency and loyalty is great. But we are seriously in need of some fresh, younger players and more energy.

How anyone can put Lowton before Bardsley is beyond me. Lowton proved a liability last season.

Depends, if we're gonna play it around on the deck more and control matches better like in 17/18 then Lowton is the better fullback. If its gonna be roll up your sleeves, batten down the hatches and battle for your lives like the second half of last season than Bardsley is your manTop Claret wrote:How anyone can put Lowton before Bardsley is beyond me. Personally Id rather start the season with the positive outlook we're gonna play good football and have decent (by our standards) possession and so Id have Lowton. Same reason id like to start with Jay over Barnes. If we struggle and it looks like another year of fighting for our lives then we turn to Bardsley and Barnes

Bardsley is solid and reliable.
Lowton has lost his way, he really has got to up his game if he is to have a future at this level.
Lowton gives away to much possession and has no end product, I also thought he was average at best yesterday.
We should be looking for a young right full back and looking to sell Lowton
