Match day experience with VAR
As VAR is being used in the Premier League for the first time on Saturday, and for the full season at every game, I am wondering how much difference it will make to the match day experience
In theory it has the opportunity to change football for the better in my opinion, but at what cost?
And will it even up key decisions that many think have in the past favoured the bigger teams?
Does anyone know the logistics?
Where will the TV screen go?
Where will be VAR officials be sited?
What background in football have the VAR officials?

Just on this, I noticed what looked to be small camera units on the touch line yesterday, about half way in each half. are they for VAR?

Games will finish around 530 for a 3pm ko and the next day for 19.45ko especially for cup games with extra time and penalties when it could take a couple of days.

Where will the TV screen go?
It’s on the side of the pitch, probably in front of the Bob Lord Stand. It’s called the RRA - referees review area
Where will be VAR officials be sited?
They are at Stockley Park
What background in football have the VAR officials?
They are proper football officials

Re: Match day experience with VAR
Was mentioned by Darren Bentley on the commentary yesterday that they have received the guidance this week.
Was a bit vague but the VAR officials will take over the screen during those decisions and the PA will make announcements during for the “25% in the stadium” that can’t see the screen.
No mention on where the second screen going

2, The Var officials are all located at a central location away from the ground.
3, Var officials are referees.

Looks like they’ve changed their mind and there will be a pitch side monitor: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/49057675" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;AndyClaret wrote:1, There won't be a tv screen.

I'm a lot more positive about VAR having read this article today. Looks like the PL are looking for a more 'nuanced' approach with fewer and shorter stoppages.

It's going to affect the atmosphere if we have to wait before cheering a goal, assuming we do score a goal.

Re: Match day experience with VAR
One difference to the match day emotion that comes to mind is previously you cheer a goal only to spot the line assistants flag has gone up for offside.
From Saturday that line assistants flag may not have gone up for offside but the goal gets disallowed by VAR.
In the first instance the disappointment is immediate, under VAR there is likely to be a longer delay before the disappointment sets in.
How long the delay we will have to wait and see.
The penalty incident at Brighton last season also could bring about a roller coaster of emotions

Re: Match day experience with VAR
Sorry Lord Bob, you posted just before I did making a similar point in a different more succinct way
Do we cheer or do we not cheer that is the question. Natural emotion will mean we cheer immediately the ball hits the net. Then pray the ref hasn't missed anything.
Tough when it appears a toenail can disallow a goal these days.
It will work both ways and delight and relief when the same thing happens to our opponents.
It's the delay!

Think of the anticipation building for 8 minutes while they decide whether Arsenil were 'Offside' or 'Handballing' it into the net.LordBob wrote:It's going to affect the atmosphere if we have to wait before cheering a goal, assuming we do score a goal.
Then the disappointment when they decide to go in favour of the Cock-er-knees as usual

Re: Match day experience with VAR
I'm looking forward to the first time the away end go mad celebrating a goal, which then gets chalked off by VAR, then we get to take mickey out of them.
I'm not looking forward to the first time it works the other way around.

Re: Match day experience with VAR
Is MOTD being extended or are they just going to show less action to fit in a long discussion on each VAR decision?
