Soundbar

Post by Robbo1882 » Sun Aug 04, 2019 1:06 pm

Looking for some advise on soundbars, I have Sky Q and looking for something that gives better sound than my current TV, I find that when the TV volume is loud enough to hear the dialogue as soon as there is some action or explosion its then far to loud, I want a happy medium between them, I see Sky do the sound box and wondered if anyone has got one and what they think of it. I also what to be able to control the sound from my Sky remote, I don't want any more remotes in the house.
If not the sky soundbox then any other recommendations would he good.

His Masters Voice used to have some nice sound horns.

I have a Sky Soundbox now, and the quality is fantastic, much better than any soundbars or surround sound systems I've had previously.

Got a Bush one (marked down at Argos) and it's brill.
Yes, there's another remote, but it's not a big deal.
Can't put it up to full volume, far too loud, shakes the floorboards as it is. Go for it.

Just remember your neighbours. ;)

I bought one from Richersounds a couple of years ago. Roth Zero 3 with Bluetooth. Just over £100 and well worth the money.

I bought a cheap one for about £70 at Saino's on a whim and it's ****.

You can't beat a home cinema system though - I might get myself another one day.

Sound from modern tvs is awful. They are designed to be used with a sound system.

Most soundbars are ok, but get a subwoofer to go with it. That really will transform your sound.

Oh, and be careful which tv /box output you use. Often the 'Optical' output is the only truly digital sound.

I have a five speaker + subwoofer system which has been brilliant but it’s over 15 years old now and in need of replacing. I was considering a Sky Soundbar as a potential replacement.

Can you use the Sky remote to control the sound from the soundbox? and does DVD's and Netfilx sound come out of the soundbox?

No soundbar will be anywhere near as good as even a reasonable 5.1 system. If you enjoy surround sound then stick with what you have or upgrade it. New technology doesn't drastically improve on the sound, only the features.

I have a Phillips 5.1 that is excellent the only negative being cables around all the walls. Modern soundbars are quality though IMO

I had a Bose soundbase and it was very very good although I’ve now upgraded to the Sonos base and a pair of Sonos ones.

Really really impressive, everyone always comments on it, the bonus is it has no wires (apart from power cables).

My soundbar is controlled exclusively by the sky q remote, and Netflix, dvd etc all comes from soundbar. Opital lead from sky to TV, hdmi from tv to soundbar.

another vote for the Bose.

best advice really: go up to curry's and have a listen of them and compare sound with price and pick a winner.

You can use the sky remote to control most amps or sound systems. It just needs setting up.

Not at all, lots of options out there although both are good

I have the Samsung K950 which is a beast but not cheap. Similar price and spec is the Sony ST 5000

Like anything else depends how much you want to spend

I got a 'refurbished' Cambridge Audio one from them direct, and there was nothing refurbished about it, it was just old stock, with everything still factory wrapped and unused.

I had a full and expensively assembled AV setup prior to this, so was worried I'd miss the power and the clarity, but this CA setup is good. It's not quite the same but it definitely does for standard TV watching.

Get less hassle off the Mrs for it too.

The CA one I linked to also works off the TV, provided the TV supports HDMI 2.0

I have a Canton sound bar after listening to Bose I thought the Canton was the better sound. Comes with a built in sub woofer and if you look at the reviews on model DM55 CANTON they are as good as the sound perfect

I suppose its all based on budget and what you expect from it. Do you want to be able to expand it in future? are you someone who uses technology like smart phones and would you like to be able to connect through hdmi/optical cable or coax? Do you want to have Alexa/google assist built in? Do you want Wifi or Bluetooth connection to be able to stream music to it?

Have to disagree, I had a Bose Lifestyle 35 system which was a 5.1 system and it was good but the wires just become annoying when rearranging a room after the mrs wants to change it up a bit. I found the Sonos Playbar, Sub and 2 play 1's just as good with a lot more flexibility when moving stuff around as its all wireless except a power cable to each. The sound quality is brilliant and is expandable and flexible. The Sonos Beam is available at a cheaper price than the playbar and is also very good.

Agree,,, I bit the bullet and invested in a couple of Sonos Playbars which are superb, both when providing the sound for the TVs they are connected to and when playing my music via WiFi connection.

I'm bumping this because I'm looking for something now to play music and also potentially looking at a system for my tv. I've been recommended a Sonos 1 for music. I've been looking at them and if I'm correct, I can get two which would then act as rear speakers in a tv surround system with a Beam, Playbar or Playbase.

Does anyone else have that? How good is it and what's the difference between Beams, Playbars and Playbases?

Being a bit mutton we decided on a Bose about 6 years ago. We bought a new all singing and dancing tv a few weeks ago and the the quality of the sound of that tv is poor compared to the Bose. The Bose also has a button to enhance speech over background which is particularly useful.
