2 great windows business wise

Post by MACCA » Thu Aug 08, 2019 6:47 pm

Successive successful windows has seen us improve the squad and basically breaking even, maybe even make a small profit.

Is this our model.

Yes we could have done better by spending some money and maybe on a guaranteed first teamer,, but with a overhaul of ageing players required in the near future, have we played a blinder?

January could be very, very interesting.

My opinions on this window are balanced I’d say maybe. Not bothered about January since we stayed up.

6/10 satisfactory, we are still missing some pace, vydra out and some pace in would have been 9/10.

Yes, last 2 windows have seen us

A. Survive
B. Make profit
C. Ship out some ageing players/unwanted players
D. Arguably improve the squad ( not splitting hairs it's all on opinions )

I've got to say I think it's been a good window, and without spending a penny really.
Puts us in a really good position in January/next summer when we need a mini overhaul with ageing players, and players out of contract.

Now bring on Saturday!

We’ve retained most of our key players, Tarkowski, Mee etc. Sad to see Tom move on but he gave us everything and you can’t hold the lad back. I’m happy to see Nick step into his shoes and we’ve also signed another potentially great keeper.

I’m looking forward to seeing all of the new signings and especially JayRod. I’d love to see him start on Saturday.

Let’s turn our thoughts to the season. Hopefully we will be more consistent. The first half of last year was dire. McNeil really brought the season to life and improved Woods and Barnes games.

2 days to go. UTC!

I would give a score of 8 - 10 with the excellent signings of Jay Rodriguez and Danny Drinkwater and also taking
into account we kept Tarkowski and McNeill

And Peters seems a very good back up to Charlie Taylor and in Nick Pope we have a much younger and excellent replacement for Tom Heaton

So yes it's 8 - 10 from me

Happy with our business this summer.

We've signed three players who've proven they can perform in the Premier League and given their age should be in the prime of their playing career.

Going into the window I think most of us had resigned to the fact that we were going to lose at least one of our favourite keepers. However we've managed to pick up another young player who in a number of years we'll probably go on to sell for 10x what we paid for him.

If we've managed to turn a profit on transfers this calendar year then that's even better.

Yes it's not perfect but in this market I'd say that's pretty good going.

I think the fact we now have a clear hierarchy in the GK department shouldnt be underestimated.

Pope will be walking that little bit taller knowing he is the man

Agree. However, there are some big issues coming up. Doubt we will keep hold of Tarks and Dwight this time next year so we need to get their and Cork' s permanent replacements in before we have to sell, to avoid clubs trying to rip us off. We should have a really big bank balance by june 2020.

Decent business. We have to remember who we are, and what fees and wages are being splashed around everywhere else which we still can't compete with if we want to keep the club ticking along

Yes and when you throw in the Crouch + cash for Vokes, the net profit was 8.5m, so looking at 3.5m ish over 2 windows with IMO a better squad.

Add with the wages saved on the likes Walter's, Couch, Heaton etc I think it's all balanced up nicely to be able to throw a bit of money at the right player or 2, when the like of

Hart, Bardsley, Hendrick, Cork, Lennon and Defour need replacing ( allpossibly in the next 12 months )

This is a very good window.

Jay Rod is an upgrade on Sam, feels like heresy given what a servant and player Big Sam was for us, offering more versatility and quality.

Pieters is an upgrade on Wardinho, if only because of relative age.

Drinkwater is as good a quality CM as we could have hoped for. The fact that he wanted to come, knowing how SD operates, should dispel any thoughts about a lack of commitment. He isn't totally up to speed which means his expectations of starting immediately will be dampened. This gives him time to learn the framework and to transition into a new environment.

As has been well said already, something had to give in the GK department. We will miss Tom's assuredness and leadership but Pope is our future.

What was also pleasing is that we told Leicester that Tarkowski would cost £50m+ on deadline day...and meant it.

Sure, we've kicked some decisions down the road but we are stronger now than we have ever been in the PL, both in terms of starting eleven and squad. All that and we have strengthened our contingencies for the inevitable rainy day.

I'm giving it a Duffer_ 88% approval rating.

It's a fair point but you would probably have seen an average of 2 from that list in the starting eleven in the second half of last season. The surgery required isn't as radical as it first appears.

It's been a 7/10 window for me.

On the plus side - we've hit our first two objectives: make sure we've enough depth in each position, and add extra quality in possession. We've added (albeit temporarily) the central midfielder with the range of passing to help us move the ball quickly and open up the pitch - Wood and Lennon in particular will relish that. Rodriguez also makes us stronger and not only adds depth and a good aerial option when we want to go long, but he'll also add craft and subtlety to our link up game (and he also has a switch of play in his locker, unlike any striker we've had since he left in the first place). Pieters adds reliable back up at left back, so once again every position has two viable options challenging for it.

On the downside - we've not been able to add any pace to the squad, nor any more players who add flexibility by covering multiple positions (Hendrick is still the only real multi-position player in the squad, which can be an issue in selecting a bench). And there's a bit of a concern that we're still storing up a bit of a problem for next season - Tarks is always going to be in demand, we'll presumably lose Drinkwater, Hendrick is out of contract and Bardsley will come to the end, so we'll be in need of another right back too. Given our struggles to recruit this summer, that could be a lot to replace (as well as some squad players like Lennon). Perhaps in that regard, the important bit of business we still need to do is to tie down Hendrick to a new deal.

So overall - it's reasonable. It should give us plenty to be competitive this season and the short-term is always the priority. But I hope planning has already begun to work out how we get a head start on next summer's task in January.

I can guarantee that if Drinkwater is playing regularly he won't want to go back to Chelsea.

With our great team spirit and commanradry Burnley will feel like heaven compared to Chelsea, where he was for the last couple of years and never got a game

Looking ahead to next summer (should we survive) I now see around 3-4 new first team players will be needed. This season it was 1-2. That's what makes it underwhelming for me. I think Drinkwater is a great signing, but we don't own him and the liklihood of us signing him permenantly if he plays well is slim. I also don't mind Pieters but I only really see Rodriguez as a first team addition. If we'd have got the young Belgian right back earlier in the window, overall I would have been happy.
With Hendrick and Defour out of contract next year, the likes of Lennon and Bardsley creeping closer to retirement and then to improve on what we have, next years job has just got even tougher.

How many of those do you think will be even here in 12 months time though? They'll need replacing.
Midfield seems to be the area that needs the biggest overhaul with all of

Lennon, Defour, Drinkwater, Hendrick and to a lesser extent Cork and Brady all possibly not here and the latter 2 not first team starters in 12 months

I'll go 7/10 too. A solid window, with all the major concerns addressed, but with nothing to get the pulse racing too much.

Heaton is a big loss, but in a position we could afford to lose a player

We kept Tarks and Mee, and seemingly Gibson happy enough to stay. (A club our size, with our finances, keeping our players is just as important as buying new ones.)
We kept McNeill our bright young hope.
We added a CM that looks to fit us perfectly.
We reduced and maybe improved our LB cover at minimal cost.
And the big one; Jay is certainly an upgrade and offers a chance to be less industrial in our attacking play.
We got the next in line for GK Improvement. Assuming Hart will be off either during the season or at the end of it.

We looked to upgrade RB, which wasn't essential, but shows SD is looking to that area next.

The negatives:
We haven't added any pace.
And while i'm happy with Jay Rod, I must say I was hoping for someone younger, JR adds to our collection of late 20s forwards, none of which will ever be sold for a massive amount, Strikers are the position with the most potential for financial growth. I think with 4 strikers, we should be looking to have a least one that is a youngster with the potential for massive growth in both ability and financial return.

Have to agree. We have helped create some fantastic players over the last 10 years picked up from league one and youngsters not wanted by top prem clubs . The players then gained skill in the championship eventually making it onto the premiere league level. Surely it is worth snapping a few of the prospects up with a view to loaning them out to develop them. A few more McNeil's and Popes are worth a couple of million a season in risk if you get 1 every 5 years.

I think I answered my own argument here. Doh!

Net spend £5m
SD made some noises earlier in the summer that he wanted much more in the way of transfer funds
Wonder if he is so happy - genuine question
A minimum effort for me and had Drinkwater not come through the doors last night there would have been a lot of questions asked on this messageboard

Net spend will be FAR in excess of £5m when you consider signing on fees, agent fees, add-ons and higher wages
