Burnley Loans

Post by wilks_bfc » Fri Aug 09, 2019 9:01 am

We haven't the best record, especially recently, in using the loans we get in.

The loans are usually, young players, that haven't played many games.

Tripper & Mee are the obvious exceptions and if I recall correctly, Keane didnt really get a chance until after we signed him permanent in the January.
Chalabah, GKN must have wondered why they bothered coming north.

Hopefully as an already established/experienced player, Drinkwater will have a much bigger impact than the others, which got me thinking,

Who was the last experienced player we had in on loan?
Trying to decide if Flanagan counts tbh, but other than that I'm struggling to think of anybody since Gazza

TBH I'd forgot that Gray was initially on loan to "get him in quick"

Delete the thread please

Keane had played around the last ten games before we signed him but he was always going to sign permanently.

Some of the loans have clearly been to offer cover but others, such as Kightly, are brought on to strengthen the squad. I see Drinkwater in that category. We’ve not brought him in just as a cover for emergencies as we’ve done with others.

You're basically saying what the rest of us are thinking. Loan players tend not to be used much because SD likes stability but I have a feeling that Drinkwater will get a better chance than previous loans. Proven quality player and he will definitely get his chance as a sub whern Cork tires or the game needs changing. I just hope Drinkwater has the drive to prove himself after his last two seasons. If it works out I can see this becoming permanent, he is just the type of player for SD and a loan is perfect for both parties, gives Drinkwater a chance to prove himself and earn his place and SD a chance to see if he's still got what he had at Leicester.

The real standout ones for me have already been mentioned; David Johnson was fabulous, Gerry Creaney had an amazing impact and Gary Cahill was immense.

It's not often I look out for former loanees, but I did/do for those three.

This was meant to be about established players that we got on loan - not young players that did well
