Squad size

Post by mdd2 » Fri Aug 09, 2019 9:11 am

Another season without a full squad of 25 senior players. Assuming Agyei is leaving and we name 3 keepers we will have 20 outfield players or 21 if we name Dunne and keep Vydra. The likes of McNeil Benson Koiki won't count as they were under 21 on Jan 1st 2019

So how many of the 20 cannot name 25 senior players? And most have far more possible players 21 and under.

It's not mandatory, and often 25 players isn't needed anyway, especially when you have players who can cover more than one position.

Do we need a squad of 25?

Just cos I’ve got a big one doesn’t mean everyone has to have a big one. Some things are more than adequate in a smaller size

You don't need many injuries if 1) few if any young players of quality to play-are Koiki and Benson good enough presently 2) Is Dunne good enough and we already have Brady and Defour absent from the 21 (which would include McNeill). A couple more niggles and the squad is a tad thin.
I know it is not different from previous seasons and IMO we probably have the best quality 18 players we have ever had in this league, but would have been better to have been able to name 22 outfield players. If those who have seen Koiki, Dunne and Benson feel they can do a job for us then my angst is less.
Palace had difficulties last season with injuries to their centre backs and they do have a stronger youth system than us presently

Hart / Legzdins / Pope / BPF
Lowton / Bardsley / Mee / Long / Pieters / Gibson / Taylor / Tarky / Dunne
Defour / Cork / Westwood / Hendrick / Drinkwater
Lennon / Brady / JBG
Wood / Vydra / Rodriguez / Barnes

I count 25 there......

Had we had a bigger squad we might not have seen McNeil last season

You are not serious that we name 4 keepers?

Let name 24 then?! Why would we not if there's a gap.....?
Unless we are saving a space for a free transfer between now and Jan

Our 4th choice keeper was needed last year

McNeil is exempt from the 25 due to age

When do 25 man squads have to be announced? Some clubs will surely be struggling with only 17 non "home grown" players allowed.

About half last season, including Arsenal, Liverpool , Man City, Tottenham and Wolves.

Not including us, we named the full 25.

Quality over quantity for me every time,i'm sure we could sign a few journeymen to swell the numbers, but how much game time would they get.

We had Vydra,Wells and Crouch in our squad at various times last season, and they barely featured.

Aside from the keepers, and the youngsters, all of the names listed above will play a part next season, injuries permitting in Defour's case.

What this should ensure is we have a strong bench to call on for once, which hasn't always been the way.

It's quality and not quantity.

Tough to pick a best X1 assuming all fit and . This is my effort
Pope
Lowton Tarks Mee Taylor
JBG Drinkwater Westwood McNeil
Barnes Wood

Could easily make a case for Bardsley, Pieters, Gibson, Brady, Defour, Hendrick, Cork, Vydra,JRod to be in Best X1. So thats 20 with only 1 gk so some very good players are not even going to make the bench !
