In the transfer window

A number of ‘ Burnley ’ signings, players who will fit Sean Dyche’s system and way of doing things: Jay Rodriguez, Erik Pieters, Danny Drinkwater.

But they’ve kind of just attempted to stand still the Clarets here, and, if anything, have merely just ended up going backwards.

Losing Tom Heaton, even for £8million at 33, is a blow; he made a world of difference to their defence last term.

They had the opportunity to really add a bit more quality this summer, ahead of a fourth successive Premier League campaign. They’ve opted not to, and look like they’ll be facing a relegation battle because of it.

Was that written by a 10 year old? Kind Of? In a serious piece of journalism?

It's all about opinions.

Losing Tom Heaton for £8m to Aston Villa was a blow for Sean Dyche, even with the England goalkeeper in the final year of his contract at Turf Moor, but if the aim of any transfer window is to finish with a stronger squad then Burnley can be satisfied. The deadline day arrival of Danny Drinkwater from Chelsea brought yet more Premier League experience following Jay Rodriguez’s return to his boyhood club and the signing of Erik Pieters from Stoke. A solid summer.

Nearly 2 seasons ago pal - those who we overtook have long gone past us now - its called progression.

We had about 4 or 5 really good progressive windows building up to the season we came 7th. The last 3 prior to this window have been pretty poor.

We've just done enough for me in this one but no doubt it is Dyche's ability to manage the squad he's got that is keeping us in this division now and not our recruitment

That's because as we get better it becomes more and more difficult to make significant improvements. It's a lot easier to have good, progressive windows when you're starting from a weaker position.

We have lost Tom Heaton but have somebody just as good in Nick Pope.

We have also strengthened our squad in key areas, how anyone can think we aren't in a stronger position this season than we were going into last season amazes me

So Pieters isn’t an improvement on Ward.
JRod isn’t an improvement on Vydra, Vokes.
Drinkwater isn’t an improvement on Hendrick.
Give your head a wobble fella.
We now have two teams pushing for places and covering for injuries and suspensions.
Sorry to disappoint you but we’ll be fine.

Yep I agree but my main point was using the 7th place finish as a point regarding recent recruitment isn't that useful.

I still also think we could have done better and felt we should have been capable of a comfortable 10th-15th place last year and still had some carry through into this season so we weren't quite as at risk to being in a relegation scrap

Just to add with the increase in wages and transfer fees my expectation was that sooner rather than later we would be battling in the bottom 5 but again I think we had a platform to outperform our true level in this division for a couple of seasons which we didn't utilise

If you disagree thats fair enough but I dont think the above is an unfair and outlandish opinion to hold

Just out of interest Boysie what do you seriously expect the club of our size to be aiming for? Champions league perhaps? Survival is the aim for a 3rd of premier league I'd guess so I'm intrigued as to why you think that's setting the bar low? I do agree about the ageing squad however and is something I hope we address in the coming transfer windows.

This whole 'progress' thing is a very strange obsession that every fan seems to have.

For most of the sides in our league 7th place is the absolute best they could hope for. That's the limit of the progress. And even sides challenging for 7th one year can have a relegation battle the next year by hitting a poor run of form at the wrong time.

For most teams in the PL they are just one bad run from a massive drop in income in relegation. There is no such thing as progress.

Interesting supplement in the Mail today ahead of the kick off.
12 football writers/pundits have given their opinions on the 3 relegation places

All 12 reckon Sheff utd will go down
9 Brighton
8 Norwich
4 Newcastle
2 Aston villa
1 Palace

NOT ONE vote for Clarets 8-)

FFS, we're currently sat in 5th spot in the Premier League and we're looking stronger for the new season... The only surprise so far is that Brighton, Bournemouth and Villa are above us (alphabetically) but that will change I'm sure.

For those papers, like the Mirror, who sell papers on tittle-tattle, it probably has been a disappointing window from Burnley.

They've got a vested interest in convincing everyone that the key to success is signing loads of players. More prosaic considerations, like keeping the squad at a manageable side and making sure that the group dynamic remains on track don't really register for the Mirror.

Andy Hunter in the Guardian gives a slightly more thoughtful assessment. He describes our summer as "solid" and i'd tend to agree.

It's not been perfect - there's still a problem or two too many storing up for next summer, when there is potentially quite a bit rebuilding job on our hands, and I suspect Dyche would have loved to move a couple more out to make space for a bit more pace and flexibility in the squad; but the squad is stronger than at the start of the summer, which is always objective number 1.

Agree totally. I can't believe there are some on here (the OP for one) banging on about losing Heaton in the final year of a contract with a club he clearly didn't want to play for any more. Selling Heaton for 8m under the circumstances was a good piece of business for a player at 33 who is never going to become an England regular at that age. Heaton went because he wanted to, does anyone really want a player at the club who doesn't want to be there? And the default lack of respect for Pope also stands out a mile. The acquisition of Jay-Rod, Pieters and Drinkwater strengthen a team that will miss Heaton not one jot. I am at last reasonably happy with a transfer window but would have been happier if Drinkwater had signed for the season, or better still permanently.

I look forward to Saturday with a lot of optimism and no little interest in the team selection. At least now we have decent options meaning the ones with the shirt will have to fight to keep it and we will have no want-away bad apples causing problems.

You'll probably be spouting the same crap for the next 3 as well.

We didn't do a lot of business, but what we did was good. I had misgivings at first about Pieters, but hes shown pre season that hes a good solid signing who can push Taylor to improve even more.
Jay Rod was ideal for us, and not because hes one of our own, but because of his versatility , his goal return, his link up play.
Drinkwater is the midfielder well have needed since Defour got injured and better than what we could afford, unless you take a gamble on some unknown continental you've seen on You Tube.
I love Tom, but we had too many keepers and if we could only keep one, it would be Nick. He might we have had the shirt last season if hed been fit.

We look stronger this season, than weve ever looked, and if Brady and Defour were fit we could hit top 10. It will be tough as always, but I cant wait to see this years team upset the apple cart again

selling heaton for that money was excellent business. We are one of the best run businesses in the entire football league. The team is steadily turning into a more attacking team and it bodes well for this season and years to come.

There are some fair comments, but despite the frustration at not replacing Defour (essentially), we've not got a bad squad.

Losing heaton is a blow, but I never expected us to be able to keep Heaton and Pope last summer and I'd have chosen Pope to stay last year - I don't feel much of a need to be interested in who the second keeper is, never mind 3rd.

I've love to know who the players are that we should have signed in order to progress in some people's eyes. Genuinely. I'd like a world class star too. Drinkwater - £30m+ Chelsea signing, premier league winner, England player = Decent signing. Rodriguez = okay signing.
Joe Hart - England captain, 75 caps, premier league winner, potentially 3rd choice keeper = Rubbish

Yeah, I just wish we'd progress and buy better quality players

Good point. If you take the top 6 out of the equation then as you say the rest are battling for 7th to be 'champions of the rest' and we have done that. I'm kinda proud of that fact. The PL is the weirdest league in the world to me. You have the top six who will always (normally) be the top 6. Out of those there are currently 3 (and possibly only 2) who have realistic aspirations of the title, the others just want to keep the big bucks rolling from the CL. The other 14 clubs form a league of their own, almost all of whom have the first priority of staying in the PL. After jostling for position for half a season some will have aspirations to win the 'champions of the rest' title and the others spend the second half of the season looking over their shoulder at potential relegation. I can't think of any league that is so clearly split into two 'leagues in this way.

The one major improvement is, I suppose, that it is a little more open at the top now than it has ever been - we have at least got away from that awful United/Arsenal double act of a few years ago. I remember the TV and media build up whenever they played each other, like announcing the second coming, and it just left me cold with boredom.

Losing Tom Heaton would have been a disaster if we didn't have Nick Pope and Joe Hart.

We do though so we can relax because in my opinion it won't affect us as much as some think. Last season was more than the Joe Hart effect, there were a few players whose heads were not on their game.

The main players we have brought in will improve the matchday squad.
