Sean Dyche's Transfer History - Quick Question
Many of us have been admiring the strength in depth we have in our current squad and marvelling at the high standard of players we now have.
The players who are now warming our benches are the kind of players we could only dream of attracting when Sean Dyche arrived.
Which got me thinking... so the question is:
Who was the first recognized striker that Sean Dyche brought to the club? Where did we get him from? And who did he eventually join after leaving us?

Barnes was first time Dyche paid a fee for a player.ClaretTony wrote:His first striker signing was Ashley Barnes
First recognized striker that he brought to the club?
I knew there might be debate about this can be defined!
I'm thinking of a player for whom we did not pay a fee.

Ryan Noble was the guy I was thinking of.Tall Paul wrote:What about Ryan Noble?
He was plucked from Sunderland reserves and the truth is, whatever his talents, he was here just to make up the numbers.
We had a talented front two in Vokes and Ings but we had nothing in reserve.
Ryan Noble has gone on to be a journeyman in the north east lower leagues playing for the likes of Gateshead and South Shields. He's currently playing at Jarrow.
He's probably a committed footballer who enjoys playing who never quite made it as a pro but the thing that is so striking to me is the gulf in ability and quality between what was a necessary "signing" to plug gaps and what we are able to achieve now.
Back then it was picking somebody from Sunderland reserves to make up numbers. We now have a Championship player of the year warming our bench and unable to get a game.

Oh, and to answer my own final question, Ryan Noble joined Gateshead immediately after leaving us.

Wasn’t Barnes the first player Dyche paid a fee for? We went about 18 months having to make do with freebies because the parachute payments were gone.

Re: Sean Dyche's Transfer History - Quick Question
Noble was an academy signing to be fair and went on the bench a few times for the first team because of a shortage of numbers. Came on too at the end of the Yeovil game.
Barnes was the first player that Dyche paid a fee for.

Yep.ClaretTony wrote:Noble was an academy signing to be fair and went on the bench a few times for the first team because of a shortage of numbers. Came on too at the end of the Yeovil game.
Barnes was the first player that Dyche paid a fee for.
He was at that age where, as an "academy" player he either had to make an impression or he'd have to accept playing at a lesser level. I know he was never truly intended for the first team but the fact that we only had two strikers who were actually good enough to play at the correct level demonstrates how tight things were back then.
We'd probably never have taken him on if things hadn't been so tight.
You've got to imagine that Dyche and his staff always knew that Noble wasn't at all likely to make the grade - he was just somebody who they thought had a good attitude and would put in an "honest shift" if he had to be called upon.
Thankfully, he was never required. Ings and Vokes became club legends firing us to promotion and the season went so well that we were "forced" to pay a fee for Ashley Barnes because to not take a bit of a gamble improving our squad would have been ridiculous given the amazing position we found ourselves in. Credit to the board for that because, let's be honest, we couldn't *really* afford even the small fee we paid for Aye-Aye.
It's been 6 years since I started pinching myself as a Burnley fan and I'm still pinching to this day.
Barnes didn't turn out so bad though, did he?
Re: Sean Dyche's Transfer History - Quick Question
And let's be fair, the other three free transfers that summer were Heaton, Arfield and Jones. None of them signed for Gateshead! (Yet.)

Barnes has ended up being better than both Ings and Vokes in the PL.

Sort of - Heaton & Cisak replaced Grant & Jensen. The other two, Liversedge & Nizic had already been signed when Dyche arrived but they didn't start until summer 2013.Devils_Advocate wrote:Did we sign 4 goalkeepers that summer?

I think one of SD's first acts in the summer of 2013 was to sign the three amigos for free (Scotty Tom and Jonesy) and sell Austin to balance the books-then in Jan when we were looking good we shelled out £700k for Ashley and the following summer did Brighton again by snatching Ward, from under their snouts, off Wolves ? for free or small fee.agreenwood wrote:Wasn’t Barnes the first player Dyche paid a fee for? I think Barnsey was even cheaper than that.mdd2 wrote:I think one of SD's first acts in the summer of 2013 was to sign the three amigos for free (Scotty Tom and Jonesy) and sell Austin to balance the books-then in Jan when we were looking good we shelled out £700k for Ashley and the following summer did Brighton again by snatching Ward, from under their snouts, off Wolves ? for free or small fee.
I've got £300-£400k in my head.
Maybe somebody can clear it up?
Re: Sean Dyche's Transfer History - Quick Question
It was believed to be £700k at the time, but a year or so later Dyche said it was £450k and the accounts didn't contradict him.Rowls wrote:I think Barnsey was even cheaper than that.
