Re: Ben Mee appointed club captain
Who's numbers have changed since last season?
Re: Ben Mee appointed club captain
We could be the first side in ages to have numbers 1-11 on the field. Though that would mean Westwood was missing .
Re: Ben Mee appointed club captain
Pope, Wood and Dwight
Re: Ben Mee appointed club captain
Like McNeil having the 11 shirt and Woody the 9
1 Nick Pope (GK)
2 Matthew Lowton
3 Charlie Taylor
4 Jack Cork
5 James Tarkowski
6 Ben Mee (C)
7 Johann Berg Gudmundsson
8 Danny Drinkwater
9 Chris Wood
10 Ashley Barnes
11 Dwight McNeil
Danny Drinkwater has a big shirt to fill at 8 (I've got a signed number 8 Dean Marney shirt, my favourite player of recent times on my computer room wall)

Re: Ben Mee appointed club captain
Switch Mee and Cork's shirts around and they'd all be in the correct position for their shirt number too.
Re: Ben Mee appointed club captain
Danny Drinkwater our first number 8 since Dean Marney

Re: Ben Mee appointed club captain
Ben was the obvious shout for Captain, well deserved.
I thought he was a bit iffy during the start of last season, in the absence of Tom, but how many of our players had bairns last year. By the look of the end of season pitch walk, half the team must have been having sleepless nights.

4 CM and 6 CB for me but I think it depends on when you first started watching football

4 is CB for me - you start at the back (GK) and work your way up the pitch, it's simple!claret10 wrote:Had many a drunken debate about this!

But then your big centre forward wears number 11! That can never be right, surely?Fretters wrote:4 is CB for me - you start at the back (GK) and work your way up the pitch, it's simple!
Re: Ben Mee appointed club captain
Pleased to see Ben wearing the captain's arm band, thoroughly deserved. Can't understand why he has never been given a chance in the England squad.

I started watching in the 70s and I’m fairly certain (but may have to stand corrected) that our centre halves were numbered 5 and 6. I have always know the number 4 to be midfield....claret10 wrote:Had many a drunken debate about this!

Re: Ben Mee appointed club captain
Same here. I think Jim Thompson was number 5, Billy Rodaway 6, they were the centre halves then uwe Noble 4 and Ginger Pele 8 in the centre of midfield.Hibsclaret wrote:I started watching in the 70s and I’m fairly certain (but may have to stand corrected) that our centre halves were numbered 5 and 6. 5 and 6 have always been the CBs, anything else is fake news.

4 and 8 midfield. 5 and 6 Centre back. Chuffed for Mee. Great player and will be a great club captain.

20 years ago,I can see us going 1 to 11 tomorrow, the inclusion of Jay instead of Barnes might just spoil it.wilks_bfc wrote:Squadnumbers.com say “Charlton Athletic’s opening two games of 1998-99 were the last time that the players in the squad numbers from 1 to 11 formed a starting team in the Premier League”

Number 4 has been used as a (defensive) Midfielders number for years now by most clubs hasn't it?

There were a few times in my opinion where Ben was ripping in to Pope today with absolutely no need apart from his own let downs. For me Ben is better when he concentrates on his own game rather than others
