Signing of the season

Post by cricketfieldclarets » Fri Aug 09, 2019 9:45 pm

Listening to footy on the radio and the suggestion was that Tom Heaton is the best signing any club made this summer

He will organise and bring stability, that's for sure.

I wouldn’t let it get to you. It might be. It might not. If Pope turns out to be an inspirational keeper, as well as Heaton, the latter will still be considered as a signing of the summer. Pope is already ours. Heaton has gone for his own reasons and good luck to him as I’ve said before. Our squad will almost certainly have got over it, so should we.

Whomsoever offered that opinion was hardly being inspirational in his / her musings anyway.

I saw DMail today in a bar - I can't remember the pundit now - he had a list of "best signings" and Tom was top.

Same sports section Crouchie had Burnley finishing 11th - but his text said "top ten." - maybe the "just outside" got cut by the editor for space... ;)

And, Crouchie's article made the comment that Nick Pope may be competing with Jordan Pickford for the England No1.

EDIT: It was Henry Winter in The Times who had Tom Heaton at the top of list of "best signings."

It was only Crouchie in DMail.

AV have signed 11 players - not sure how many were there last season on loan - Tom will have his work cut out to "organise and bring stability" to a whole group of guys who are still "getting to know" each other.

Good luck to Tom. I hope he does well.

Best signing of the close season was Burnley signing Nick Pope on a long contract - was it 4 + 1 seasons? Burnley had the pick of their keepers and chose Nick. That has got to be the right decision for the club.

I think Drinkwater will prove to be a phenomenal signing, and on a cost/return ratio in this day and age Jay Rod will surprise a few.

I though Villa had signed 13 because they lost 16 at the end of the season

Wow, I don't follow the Championship. So, they shipped out most of the 2018/19 squad? That really is a "blind date" of a squad they've got going into this season - unless they've signed most of them all from the same other team. ;)

They must be paying Tom a lot. I'm now feeling a bit sorry for him.

Probably true, almost a ticket for villa for a 2nd year in the division.

I’m nervous letting him go, but as long as Pope performs at the level he did then it was probably one of the best bits of business by both clubs this season.

It’s the Eve of another season in the Premier League for Burnley, read those last few words again. We are still Premier League against all odds #UTC

I'm betting that he will not be the messiah they are expecting. Our defensive setup and strategy restrict shots on goal to those from outside the area. In another team playing another system, he won't have the same protection.

However, we are going to miss him as a captain. He never stops shouting in a game, and that is going to be a miss for us.

half the team that got them up were on loan hence the high numbers, hopefully Spurs will do to them what Liverpool did to Norwich. As much as I love Tom he's left now so I hope he concede a minimum of 4 a game :D

The misses had a good point the other day. She pointed out that Tom had got to that age where weight was hard to shift.... Think we got the best years.

I still find it strange to except only £8 Million for an England International goalkeeper who is still only 32, especially as we are not one of the big six.

Great bit of business by Villa. I was gutted when he went but a fully fit Pope shades it for me.

Only one promoted side (Fulham) have been relegated after spending over 50m.

Villa will be fine

He won't be. If he gets back to the kind of form he showed prior to his injury, he SHOULD be competing with Pickford, but there are other things to consider here. If I told you what I think they are, you'd say I was a conspiracy theorist. Goalkeepers - especially England goalkeepers - operate to a different set of rules to players in other positions. Pickford won't be unseated now until he accidentally and brutally cuts his own head off whilst shaving. Until that happens, the best Pope can hope for is No2. And that's not competition - it's back up.

Certainly the best signing - or to put it another way - the worst sale

Still a sore point, but his wage probably paid for Drinkwater and we have Pope as well. Just got to think Pope is the future.

That basically says if you spend enough you are guaranteed to stay up.

Spot on. Let's hope Pope stays fit and it doesn't come back to bite us. The difference in our team when Heaton replaced Hart wasn't a coincidence last season, Heaton was so much more to our defence than spectacular saves.

Yes maybe but until Pope proves his fitness and last seasons form then we should have kept Tom until the club were satisfied with Pope's return (Tom could have commanded a higher fee as well to a struggling club with an inferior keeper), otherwise we will be lumbered with Hart in goal and we know how limited he was last early part of the season.

Hmm. But how many teams have spent more than £50m after getting promoted? - can't be many.

Mooy to Brighton (even better with his chum Billings waiting there for him) is a very, very good bit of business and could prove absolutely crucial for them.
