Pieters starts

Post by cricketfieldclarets » Sat Aug 10, 2019 2:20 pm

Not surprised after pre season. Been excellent. Not here to make the numbers up. Fair play to him for breaking in so soon.

Taylor took a knock and so misses out altogether.

Hadn’t seen that. But think based on pre season pieters has deserved his shirt.

Hopefully Taylor doesn’t get it back as it means Pieters has played at Ward levels 8-)

On the other side of the coin though, you could say Taylor wouldn't have deserved to miss out, after his performances last season. Which is why I think Jay is also on the bench; SD is (rightly imo) sticking with the players who performed well for hims last season, with players like DD and Jay needing to prove in league games that they should be starting. I expect Taylor would have started had he been fit.

The shirt is Taylor's to lose. He was excellent last season.

Taylor is becoming a top full back, and Pieters challenging him will help both develop into the top level of their potential hopefully.

The only thing I will say is if he you would’ve said we would start the season with No Heaton and the only new signing playing being Pieters you’d be worried.

Forget the assists. Had a superb game anyway.

At 0-0 he made up about 10 yards on a cross field pass to win the ball and a free kick on the by line.

Stepped into Wards shoes nicely. Well done Erik!

Like I posted in the match thread, this is exactly what we want - two top players battling it out for who starts. SD will be chuffed at that 'problem' on his hands.

He grew into the game and of course got two assists. I was far from convinced in the first half though - some very poor defensive headers, right back into the centre.

He was much better in the second.

Taylor has a job on his hands to get back in if he keeps up that level of performance. Superb stuff!

Looked a bit unsure first half and he and Dwight didn't seem to be helping each other, but as with the whole team, did much better second half and seemed to grow in confidence. Lovely cross for second goal. Good competition at left back now.

Not sure how Taylor gets back in based on that performance. Was a steady first half but grew into the game and second half can’t think where he put a foot wrong. 1.5m seems a bargain signing based off today.
Was good to see the back 5 being solid today in conditions that can’t of been easy to play in.

My MOM today and that's before the two assists, was a little exposed 1st half as DM was the least disciplined of our midfield, but stuck at it and dominated more and more as the game went on. much like the whole team!

I have a Stoke fan as a mate, can't wait to take the p**s down the pub, and he said Pieters was a great fullback, but the new guy didn't fancy him. He likes to play with a diamond and thought Pieters crossing wasn't good enough. It didn't take Sean long to sort that out

It’s not like I get reminded every 5 minutes on here from posters like you so you can have it back with interest when proved wrong. More goals created in one half than Taylor in one season. The facts say it all.

The Stoke manager clearly knows what he's doing, two defeats so far this season, keep playing the diamond until your sacking in October.

Not many were impressed with Charlie when he first played. We have to understand that it takes time to get used to a new system and new team mates. For a first outing that was impressive.

The second half sort of proved that defending, certainly when the ball was in the air, in that area of the pitch was very difficult due to the conditions.

Thought Pieters had a great debut. He plays quite narrow and was shaky to begin with, but he grew into the game well and he fits into our system perfectly. A cracking assist as well. Charlie Taylor will find it tough to get back in.

Sadly though, there is one negative to this. Hibsclaret will be creaming himself now that Taylor's position in the side looks uncertain.

On today's showing he's the epitome of a "Dyche player" (far more so than Charlie Taylor) and will fit perfectly.
[And that's not intended as a criticism of Taylor]

It's only a good thing for us fans. I'm a big fan of Taylor's, but if he has someone like Pieters challenging him to the wire to make the starting 11, it's quite clearly a brilliant thing for us all. We want the competition to be so tight, that our 'second 11' isn't far off our 'first 11'.

Pieters grew on me. 1st half he looked lost due to his lack of link up play with McNeil. McNeil looked lost because he was missing the link up play with Taylor.

2nd half Pieters was excellent has was McNeil, over time they will gain a good understanding playing with each other.

I really rate Taylor from the 1st time I saw him pull on our shirt. Last season was so frustrating watching him play before Xmas, Dyche played him in such a negative role. Once Dyche let Taylor out of his shackles and let him play his natural game we saw what a class act he is and what a major contribution he makes

He was limping for last 20 mins after a challenge that made Bardsley look polite

If he doesn’t recover back to Charlie

To be fair SD has always given players a chance to keep a place as long as they perform, it's the same for ever one on the pitch bar Tarks and Mee. I'm sure we haven't seen the last of Charlie but it's great to know we have 2 good players fighting for the spot.
He seems to have a lot of pace as well which is a bonus at both ends of the pitch.
