Pope 8
Lowton 8
Tarks 8
Mee 8
Pieters 7
Cork 7
Westwood 7
JBG 6 (+ 1 for goal)
McNeil 7
Barnes 8
Wood 6

Subs N/A

A weird game as until the ball simply and fortuitously blew over their defender's head and Barnes put it away superbly, I felt it could go either way and we weren't looking that great and weren't creating much in front of goal. I really didn't see 3 nil coming, but after we scored they seemed to lose heart rapidly and were suddenly easily and well beaten. I'm not getting carried away because ultimately it might turn out that Saints are a poor side and relegation fodder, but it's very nice to get under way with 3 points and especially against a team in "our bracket".

Thought he was poor today and think that led to JBG and McNeil really being in the game for 50mins

you must have been watching a differnt game. he was superb

Watching the Game of the day (full re run) on Sky at the minute and up to now (2-0 up) I am absolutely comfortable with my initial instincts that Westwood was below average (5) (which in my mind is poor for him) today. Gave the ball away so many times.

It's pretty self explanatory. One poster says McNeil was a 5 (below par) and the very next poster says that McNeil was a 9 (excellent).

I find that humorous and amazing.

Hopefully Wood also feels the pressure with Jay being on the bench.

Thought Cork had had much better game today as well, perhaps the pressure of DD signing.

Looks like a good window and importantly some strong benches going forward.

Fair enough. I'd like to know what warranted a 9, but obviously nobody is wrong....

Pope 7
Lowton 7 - thought his distribution was terrible all game
Tarkowski 9 - kept Adams and Ings quiet alongside
Mee 9
Pieters 8 - he was poor first half but ended up with two assists and a clean sheet on his debut
Jbg 8 - much more like it and I look forward to more of the same throughout this season
Cork 7 - didn’t really get a grip on the game
Westwood 6 - A LOT of running but his passing was miles off it
McNeil 7 - tidy on the ball and got us out of some tricky situations with neat footwork, didn’t really see enough of the ball in the final third
Barnes 8 - was calling for him to be subbed but then popped up with 2 goals!
Wood 6 - ran the channels well but conditions were not ideal for the ball to be sticking/easy to take down

Pope 7- Welcome back Nick.
Lowton 7-Very good 2nd half
Tarkowski 9*-Thought he was excellent. This lad is much better than Maguire IMO.
Mee 8- Captains performance.
Pieters 8-Its going to be interesting who gets the shirt on regular basis
JBG 7-Worth admission money for the goal.
Westwood 6-Very industrious but Ashley set his own bar last season, not his best game.
Cork 9-Jack's took some stick on here over the past 12 months, not from me mind, but he was excellent.
McNeil 6-Never really affected the game.
Barnes 8-Took his goals brilliantly.
Wood 7-Had a poor 1st half but very industrious in the 2nd.

JayRod- Have to say my favourite moment of the afternoon, making his long awaited PL bow. Welcome home.

We were poor 1st half although southampton created little. 2nd half we stuck to our guns and certain individuals upped their game. I thought our wide 4 played a lot better 2nd half. McNeil was not has effective without Taylor although Pieters played a lot better in the 2nd half and really grew into the game.

Typical Burnley victory, nowt flash, just pure graft and determination. Southampton will have to up there work rate and fitness if they are to avoid a relegation dog fight again

I thought Corky had his best game for us for a long time and our MF performed well. Back four was immense but i thought Pope was not his old self and perhaps was lacking in confidence which hopefully will come back with game time. He was slower than usual coming off his line IMO and on two or three occasions could have caused us problems-so for me the Jury is still out with him ie his shoulder maybe fine but what about his head?
We put in a better performance than they did in awful conditions and Ash was immense.
Anyone know why the ref called Mee over for a word in the first half?

Pope 7 - good save from Redmond and dealt with atrocious conditions well

Lowton 7 - steady play, did well against some tricky customers

Tarkowski 9* - absolutely imperious

Mee 8 - classic Mee, gave 100%

Pieters 7 - thought he was shaky first half but great assist and grew into the game

Gudmundsson 7 - in and out of the game but fantastic goal

Westwood 6 - not one of his best games but head never dropped

Cork 8 - more like the Cork of old. Great use of the ball

McNeil 7 - struggled to get a foothold in the game but showed what he can do in the second half. Lightning fast feet.

Barnes 8 - thought he’d been ineffective until the goal, but two great finishes

Wood 7 - can be frustrating but a constant thorn in their side

Overall, a deserved victory. First half was a poor affair not helped by the conditions, with both teams playing pretty direct. That played into our hands and rendered both Ings and Adams (who looked overawed by the occasion) pretty ineffective. Only Redmond looked like doing something. If the players hadn’t realised, then Dyche will have made clear at HT that the back line was ripe for exploiting and so it proved. Stephens and Vestergaard were shocking all game while keeper just seemed nervous. Worrying performance from a Southampton perspective, even at such an early stage, but a very promising one from ours.

And card payments! Finally!

From TV - tough game to mark, in that it was very tight and pretty scrappy for long periods, but once we got the wind in the second half we were always the more likely winners.

Pope - 7 - Decent save from Redmond first and and a smarter (if less heralded) one with his feet at his near post late on, but otherwise untroubled. Understandably after a long lay off his handling and command of his area was a little less certain than we grew used to two seasons ago, and his kicking remains less precise than the top keepers, but he will be pleased with his return.

Lowton - 7 - Caught a couple of times first half, but recovered to be a steady presence.

Pieters - 7 - Another to be caught a couple of times first half - and perhaps the wind didn't help - but his second half was impressive, capped with the glorious searching cross that put Barnes' second on a plate.

Tarkowski - 9 - Clearly not affected by the Leicester speculation. Unflappable and imperious, in tough conditions.

Mee - 8 - As so often, the ideal uncomplicated foil to Tarkowski.

Westwood - 7 - Less tidy in possession than he would like, but did the spadework really effectively.

Cork - As Westwood. Looked recharged from the summer, which is a real positive.

JBG - 8 - Bright and breezy throughout, and that sense of purpose was epitomised by the closing down that resulted in his goal, which he finished sublimely. Another he looked recharged by a proper close and pre-season.

McNeil - 6 - Well shackled, but he'll know he was off the pace first half - but he responded well to produce a vastly improved second half.

Barnes - 9 - The most composed of our front 6 in the first half, and capped a good all round performance with two superb finishes.

Wood - 6 - Never stopped working and trying to give us an outlet, and much more effective in the second half (as you'd expect with the wind), but not a lot came off for him.

Subs- not on long enough.

Always a danger of reading too much in to the opening day. If you're being critical, our use of the ball was pretty unremarkable for long periods and it was no surprise the opening goal resulted from a fairly aimless clearance - but we were playing the conditions, and we know the wind swirling around turf moor can lead to defensive errors and there's nothing wrong with being pragmatic on these occasions. More promisingly, we looked organised, pro-active and key players who were below their best last season were bang at it physically today.

As for Southampton, they weren't great. Redmond a threat, but if I were a Southampton fan I'd be a bit worried that that team lacks a focal point to its attacking football. If they can't counter-attack, they look to be built around winning the ball high up the pitch. It might work occasionally against the better teams, but I'm not too sure the rank and file of the league will be allowing them too many opportunities to play to their strengths.

I assume it was to tell Westwood to calm down. Clear dissent from Westwood immediately before that - although his frustration was justified. Maybe Scott realised that Westwood was a bit riled and chose to speak to Mee about it rather than brandish a yellow card. If that's what happened then it was really good refereeing because there were no further problems after this.
(I maybe wrong though).

Pope 6 - not a lot to do, 1 decent save. Noticeable that Tarks and Mee were encouraging him throughout - made a change from the keeper barking instructions to the centre backs. Eased back in, clean sheet - happy with that.
Lowton 7 - decent. Niggled well.
Tarkowski 8 - strong performance, better in the 2nd half when he seemed determined to head everything - even the knee highers.
Mee 8 - another strong performance, and liked how he supported Pope.
Pieters 7 - difficult 1st half but very good 2nd half defensively. So one footed it defies belief but produced a high swirler for the 1st (alright I know the centre half was worse than useless) and then a glorious inviter for the 2nd - and managed to slow Danny Ings with a well directed cross field pass.
Gudmundsson 7 - struggled to get into the game in the 1st half, and does take a challenge or 2. Skilful player who evidenced it with a well taken goal and was a touch unlucky in the 1st half. Worked hard.
Cork 7 - an improved performance (compared to the back end of last season). Some decent thinking football
Westwood 8 - the lad worked so hard and played a major part in Southampton not having any decent chances (apart from the 1 in the 1st couple of minutes that was it). Did so much helping out his team mates
McNeil 5 - Southampton clearly were aware of him and Romeu got in his way quite a bit. Not able to make his mark. Stronger than last season, but no surprise he was hooked.
Barnes 8 - a clever game from him, took a few and gave a few but knew not to challenge the Centre Half for the 1st goal. Took both goals extremely well but should have done better for the team when he intercepted in front of the keeper - understandable to an extent when on a hat trick, but the team comes 1st.
Wood 6 - battled in atrocious conditions at times, but hold up play let him down at times. Unfortunate to have his goal ruled out - he did well to put it away.

Pope 7 - Not a lot to do - a good tip over but a bit of hesitation
Lowton 6 - Good going forward, but doesn't get tight enough defensively - I think he will struggle this season against better wingers
Pieters 7 - Got better as the game went on - Great cross for the second goal - not sure about his defensive positioning
Tarkowski 8 - Dominated and looked assured for the most part, except when he left Adams free early doors
Mee 7 - Good strong performance from Ben - distribution from the back was typically difficult - the midfield need to give him options however
Cork 8 - Back to good form from Corky - he battled and won a great deal in midfield - Drinkwater on his shoulder will be a good incentive to perform
Westwood 6 - Westy struggled a bit - battled well, but his passing was poor and didn't keep the ball for a change
JBG 7 - Very quiet first half but got better as the game went on. He has quality and his goal was excellent
McNeil 6 - Well marked most of the game and couldn't find much room. Still carries the ball very well - missing the link with Taylor perhaps?
Wood 6 - Ran the channels and made it difficult for their defenders. His touch sometimes lets him down, but he is definitely worth the shirt
Barnes 8 - Nothing first half, but two great finishes. Underestimate Ashley at your peril...

A great start to the season in difficult conditions. So important to pick up points against the teams around us. Great quality on the bench, all bodes well for a strong season - let's see how we measure up against Arsenal and Liverpool.
