Burnley 4 Sheffield United 0 - 1966
Today was the biggest opening day win since Gordon Harris got a hat trick in 1966 and we beat Sheffield United 4-0

Gordon Harris....he had a hell of a powerful shot on him.
Exalted company indeed.

England were the World Champions and I was only 19.

I was only 11 but i remember Eddie Hodgkinson the Blades keeper applauding Bombers 25 yard half volley into the top corner.

I was there
But you know what I honestly thought that Andy Lochead scored with a long range shot

I think you might be mixing two keepers up. There was Eddie Hopkinson at Bolton and Alan Hodgkinson at Sheffield United.Siddo wrote:I was only 11 but i remember Eddie Hodgkinson the Blades keeper applauding Bombers 25 yard half volley into the top corner.

Along similar lines a stat I saw on the BBC - first time we have won a top flight home game on the opening day since Coventry in 1967

If my memory serves my right, that Coventry game was Frank Casper's debut for us?EarbyClaret wrote:Along similar lines a stat I saw on the BBC - first time we have won a top flight home game on the opening day since Coventry in 1967

2 midgets by modern standards and yet both won England caps, at a time when they weren’t dished out willy-nilly.ClaretTony wrote:I think you might be mixing two keepers up. There was Eddie Hopkinson at Bolton and Alan Hodgkinson at Sheffield United.
