Heard some helmet muttering that we were poor on the way back to my car, I asked him how much poorer than them does 3.0 tell you. He couldn't really give an answer whilst choking back his tears. I suspect he had a Che Adams shirt on underneath his raincoat.

There wasn't much in it bar a huge collapse from them in the second half. I think they have too much quality to be in a scrap which makes our win even more impressive

Southampton have produced some fantastic players over the years. Unfortunately for them, they don't have any in their current squad.

They could well be in trouble this season.

The PL is a game for pragmatists - outside of the top 6 it's about finding ways to beat the teams you aim to finish above.

If Southampton fold that easily against any of the other 12 teams likely to flirt with relegation then it's going to be a long season for them.

For the majority of supporters who genuinely value the edge Seam Dyche gives us today was a perfect example of its execution.

Shocking defensively, absolutely shocking. They got away with a couple of slips in the first half, but we punished them for each and every mistake second half. If I was a Saints fan, I'd be worried about the way they collapsed after the first went in.

Gunn - suspect
Stephens - poor
Vestegaard - dismal
Bertrand - laughable

Worrying times for them, I think.

Wonder what Vokes thought when he saw the score, unused sub as Stoke lost 3-1 at Charlton and his old team battered the team he supports !!

We were that "suspect" they failed to cause us many issues and shipped 3 goals , when if truth be known, we didnt really create much and wasnt at our best...

Wait until the play a Good side that creates a dozen chances.

It was a poor game until our first, but we coped better with the conditions and deserved the win.

I don’t mind that we don’t get any credit. Being unfashionable unites the players & fans.

They play Liverpool next Saturday down St Marys. They need to do a lot of training ground work this coming week or they'll get marmalized.

I see they like to call us out for our direct play but I think they need to look closer to home. Lots of aimless long passes.

Keeper looked nervous and defence all over the place.

A lot of teams still miss the essential point about football. If you score goals and don't let them in, you win. They can talk all they like about there not being much between the teams; but what there was between the teams was that we could defend and score goals, they could do neither. Pretty play in midfield? What of it.

Having said that, I agree the first half was poor.

Thing is, when teams drop points against us, saying things like “long ball”, “physical” and “direct” helps to soften the blow of defeat. Their manager did it today. Like they were the only ones trying to play. It’s ******* hilarious. Southampton played more long balls than us in the game. But this is the narrative.

Was the first goal from a direct ball?
To me Pieters was simply hooking the ball clear from the Southampton player and in the conditions fell nicely for us

Was the second goal a long ball?
Pieters “hoofed” it 50yrds straight into Barnes path, who didn’t have to break stride

Was the third goal from a physical challenge?
JBG wanted it more, won it fairly (according to the all seeing VAR) and played an 18yrd “long ball” into the far corner.

It’s typical deflection tactics of opposition managers when they don’t get results against teams that they perceive as being under them - and tbh they are usually foreign managers that do it

2nd goal was a pin point pass, you could see Erik look up just before he did it.
2 ****-poor teams for 45 minutes and the we got to grips with the conditions and bossed it. They seem to forget we played them off their park last season in a disappointing 0.0 draw.

Personally think that we used the wind conditions to our advantage better than they did when attacking the Jimmy Mac.

What they really miss is a target man type like Pelle, not sure where Shane Long was yesterday but him alongside either Ings or Adams would have posed more of a threat.

They were fine defensively until the wind totally took Vestergaard out of the play and allowed Ash in to score. Then for 10 mins they were shocking. I’d be more worried if they are relying on an injury prone Danny Ings, an unproven Che Adams and an out of position Redmond to get their goals.

The build-up play to the second goal was really neat and tidy, starting with Lowton before a quick interchange with the two CMs gives Pieters room on the left. It's a super delivery but from Southampton's perspective their full-back gives the ball away cheaply in a dangerous position. There is no pressure on the ball at any time in the build-up and Barnes strolls onto a perfectly weighted cross between two static defenders who don't seem to be aware that he's there. In fact Pieters' ball just eludes an unmarked Wood before it reaches Barnes.

I'd agree Hassenhuttl's post-match comments are to try and deflect too-close scrutiny of their second-half capitulation. They've got the players but if they don't apply themselves better than that very quickly he could be in trouble.

There was a clear shirt pull on Wood as the ball was passing him before Barnes put it into the net for our second. It wouldn’t have surprised me for us to have been awarded a penalty had Barnes not put it in.

They can slag us off all they want just makes the next team we face obsess on defending our long ball aggression... that will make some nice pockets in their set up for a bit of pass and move football to undo them, we know we can play several ways...

It just helps us that everyone thinks we’re Wimbledon reincarnated.

Well actually they did. We were asleep and Adams really should have scored in the 2nd minute, and that would have put an entirely different complexion on the game. Beyond that though - I agree our defensive unit was superb.

Which came first, the chicken or the egg.
Their fans are complaining that the players aren't up to playing the technical way Hasenhutl wants them to.

Which is a common thing. A new manager tries to mould his players into his style of play.
Sean seems to be unique, in that he looks at the qualities of his players, and then picks a tactical, technical way that suits them. Fans, including some on here, but especially away fans, just don't understand that the hoofball accusations are rubbish, we just play in a way to win, no matter the opposition, no matter the weather conditions. Just as the great man says.

Their centre back pairing is poor.
Stephens was awful on the turf last year and Mountain from Game of Thrones is just an accident waiting to happen - i’ve seen milk turn quicker.

Hard to tell how good the keeper is but their full backs are both decent.
Romelu has always looked a very tidy player for me in the role he plays and he always seems to play well on the Turf
Warde-Prowse is a good player - his delivery is excellent but think he can get over run in games by more powerful teams.
Redmond was (and is) their best player by a mile.

Up front i’d be worried about Ings based on that performance - and also obviously by his injury record. The young lad who came on looked a big strong lad but if that is there first attacking sub option they don’t have much in depth. Adams didn’t really get a kick - he might get better but if our centre backs dominated him like we did then he needs to show a lot more than he did Saturday.

First half Southampton shaded it - but without causing us many problems...there is no way they could keep that level of pressing up for the second half and it showed. As soon as we began to get on the ball and got more space and getting to the knock downs first it massively exposed their defensive weaknesses

I get a little sick of fans and managers banging on about the long ball game. We can and often do play decent stuff but you cut your cloth accordingly. But let's look at the 'long ball ' argument. First off what the hell is wrong with finding a way to win games? If you are a manager and you don't like it then find a way of beating it but don't whinge if you are beaten by it, it's still bloody football, if you can't beat it then you are suspect as a manager. If you are a fan what do you want? Pretty football that gets you relegated or a way of winning that brings you points? People should stop moaning about other club's style of play (not just us) and find a way of beating them or shut the f"ck up. As for the 'pundits' I find it somewhat crass and also fawning that when we play a long ball up and score we are playing the long ball game but if City (or any of the favoured clubs) do it they have played an 'incisive forward pass brilliantly'. I have never been able to stomach holier than thou arrogance and pomposity and that applies to football as well as life.

Spot on houseboy. Liverpool and City keepers are past masters of the long ball and the sooner we have keepers with their abilities to find outfield players 60-70 yards away with incisive forward passes aka fantastic long balls the better. Jimmy Mac was a master of the long ball cross field to either Pilky or Connelly from opposite wings.

Yeah, not sure how a rake of the studs down the shin can be classified as "slightly late". Even on time it's a rake of the studs down the shin, so don't understand that argument.

What gets me is you see "long balls" in every game, the only difference is this

Stones plays a 80yrd ball into the feet of Jesus running in on goal = "brilliant vision from the cultured defender seeing his teammate exposing the space"

Tarkowski plays a 80yrd ball into the feet of Barnes running in on goal = "lumped forward and got lucky after the thug barged through his marker"
