We'll probably draw winner of Sheff Weds v Bury tie, which will result in us being weeks behind the other fixtures as it's been postponed for tonight already.

Or we think it's possible to have a decent cup run without getting relegated.South West Claret. wrote:You obviously don't understand the importance of Burnley FC remaining in the Premiership for another year.
In 2008-09 we played 12 cup games and still got promoted. Cup runs aren't the end of the world. When did we all get so pathetic when it comes to playing a few more matches?

I`d rather remain in the Premier League personally....not too keen on rugby.South West Claret. wrote:You obviously don't understand the importance of Burnley FC remaining in the Premiership for another year.
Yes staying up is a priority but hopefully we have a good enough squad to have a better go at the cups. We put a pretty strong side out against Burton last year and we were poor...but they went on to reach the semi final so we weren't`t the only team undone by them.
With hardly any midweek fixtures in the league I think we can afford to put out a good number of first team players and we have a lot of quality on the bench. If the likes of Hendrick, Gibson, JayRod, Charlie Taylor, Bardsley, Lennon start alongside Ben or Tarks, Westwood or Cork, Barnes or Wood, Dwight or JBG etc then we have no excuses. These are established, experienced and expensive players who should be pushing for a first eleven place and looking to impress. What i wouldn't want to see is the likes of Vydra playing if there is no chance they are ever going to be in the league team - anyone who knows however well they do won't be in the team at the weekend cannot be fully motivated in my view.

We’ve got a very lively squad that can easily be rotated this year and I’d expect a decent crack at the cups . Though aside what the bottom lip quivering brigade believe Dyche has never disrespected any cups and simply does the standard squad rotation ( injuries aside) that any prem manager does .
A very loose XI below looks non too shabby for early rounds
Hart
Bards Long Gibson Taylor
Lennon Cork Drinkwater Brady/U23
J Rod Hendrick

Now the squad has quality and strength in depth, we could do with a decent cup(s) run to keep everyone match fit. We get more opportunities to support the Clarets, the club generates more revenue, what's not to like?

An extra 5 or 6 games won't do us any harm. Not sure why so many people on here have this view that having a bit of a cup run leads to automatic relegation.

Re: LEAGUE CUP 2ND RD
I think you're missing the point. It's not the game time that could be damaging, but the potential injuries received to key players that is the risk. Why risk playing key players against lower league opposition, who can be more clumsy in the tackle, for a slim chance to win a cup. Our primary focus has to be the Premier League and as such we cannot risk injuries in the early rounds.jrgbfc wrote:An extra 5 or 6 games won't do us any harm. Granted, if we made it to the quarter/semi final I think we should then take it more seriously, but until then, not for me.

A good cup run can also improve the league form by creating that buzz and winning mentality.
However SD will look to have us out of them ASAP.

You only have to look at our last proper cup run, under Owen Coyle, to see how damaging it can be.Rick_Muller wrote:I think you're missing the point. I understand your point, but you've completely misunderstood mine. I get that a cup run can be good for morale and can improve performances, but it also can cause injuries to key players - it is a risk that the management team assess and act accordingly.
If memory serves - in the early rounds in that Captial Punishment cup run - didn't Coyle rest key players until the later rounds...??? I'm sure Jay Rod started some of the early games, but was only a sub in the latter stages.

If you took out Cork as he is a starter and stick Vydra in then that side would be easily relegated especially with the state of Brady and his injury problems.Quicknick wrote:That is some shadow 11!

Re: LEAGUE CUP 2ND RD
We have no excuse for not taking both cups seriously this year, there is no EL distraction, and we have a decent squad now.
It's not just the XI selected that matters it's their attitude, could we win one of the domestic trophies,it's unlikely but we could at least have a go.

Re: LEAGUE CUP 2ND RD
A run to the League Cup Final, providing we exit the FA Cup in the 3rd Round gives us a 46 game season. A run to the FA Cup Final, providing we go out of the League Cup 2nd Round is a 45 game season, not exactly a fixture backlog is it? We cope well with these amount of games in the Championship and with better facilities, squad (technically, depth wise and fitness) plus better staff behind the scenes, particularly sports science and physios, a decent cup run is easily manageable.
As a side point calling Carlisle away in 2nd round.

Can't really complain about that after some of the rubbish draws we've had in recent years. No doubt we'll make changes but we should still have enough to beat Sunderland at home.

Dyche will be pleased as there won’t be too many grumbles when we lose.
