Are we suspect at Corners?
We bring everyone back at corners, and am aware of SDs reasons for this, yet I'm not convinced with our marking of men and space.
Twice yesterday, I felt, we were exposed by corners from the right.
In the 1st half Romeu was just outside the box on our left and made a latish run so had a free header from a driven well directed corner; poor execution - merely glanced it.
In the 2nd half, a similar position where Westwood, I think, was drawn out to cover a shortish corner, Valery(?) darted in to meet another well directed corner, but again poor execution slipped and ended up diverting it with his head whist on the floor.

Clean sheet....you are always going to be opened up at this level, no matter how well you play....yesterday after the chance in the couple of mins for Adams I didn't think they had a sniff

Re: Are we suspect at Corners?
I don't think it's anything to do with us not conceding - could and should have been 1-0 down after 2 minutes. Does that mean SD will ignore it and not bring it up?
Of course not. Things we get away with SD will be looking to improve.

If you go on the first link and scroll to last season we conceded a lot of corners but going on the second link we defended them well enough so I think Dyche had it right.

we should be better from corners this season, when Pope got his first chance with us he came and collected an awful lot, no doubt that's a huge plus for us

Just a shame you don't appear to have read all the post, then you might have noticed "poor execution" in both cases.

Pieters (at 6ft) is several inches taller than Charlie Taylor - it will be interesting to see how the battle for the LB shirt pans out but that extra aerial presence when defending balls into the box from set plays might come into SD's thinking.

If anything, it will be those two new blocks!
Stopping the wind coming through and putting off the opposition.

Re: Are we suspect at Corners?
In my view we are the only team in the Premier League that seems to play the percentages in these situations. Meaning we concede a corner, everyone one back and just clear the ball as far as possible and into touch. Therefore yes we concede possession again but we start with our structure again 4-6-0 or 6-4-0 with full backs as centre halves and wingers as full backs. Most teams cant break that down so they have to go back with the ball. So then we push up and relieve the pressure.
We are one of the only teams if not the only team that would happily just kick it out of play so that we get our structure correct again rather than risking an attack with one player out of position risking the positional awareness of others.
City are a little similar in how they make fouls when defending quick breaks to allow them to all get back in place. But because they are nice to watch they dont get pulled up in the media so much. We would do the same but because of how we are labelled we have to not make them chlenges as refs would book our players because of our reputation whereas they wont with City's players.

Just pointing out that we won by three goals. As for defending corners, I’d think defending anything was difficult in those conditions yesterday.claretcarrot93 wrote:Any need? Its a football discussion forum. Its a topic about defending corners. Should nobody create any topics if we win?

Lots of teams bring everyone back for corners. I’m pretty sure Man City did against us last season.

Re: Are we suspect at Corners?
Whoever we play, we are a big, in stature, team so if you're the opposition you have to look at alternate ways of gaining an advantage, at corners.
It just seemed to me that from corners on the Southampton right they were able to manipulate situations about 15 yards from goal on our left hand side where they could get a man free. Clearly they mixed up their corner routines, so they didn't try it every time, and they had options - Romeu, Valery. To me they'd identified a weakness. I wondered if others had seen this, or if I had misread what happened - that's not uncommon, I was convinced Wood had scored a legitimate goal!

Re: Are we suspect at Corners?
Toni - Last season a lot of sides were pulling corners back to the corner of our box and then putting in diagonal balls, particularly after Newcastle's set piece worked against us at the Turf.
Something we need to be mindful of.

Heights are often wrong, transfermarkt for example would have you believe that JBG is taller than Tarkowski.

We have had the discussion before about Taylors height and I posted a team shot of him standing next to Ben Mee and obviously a couple of inches taller. Here’s one with Ash.

It is in this case too. Taylor isn't 6'1. Best to go with official club info which says 5'9.Mattster wrote:Not in this case.

Re: Are we suspect at Corners?
Taylor is 100% over 6ft. The club also have Pope as 6ft 4, which isn’t correct. The club just take values off Wikipedia. 5ft 9 is about the same height as Brady. Taylor is miles taller than him.

Height won't come into it at all with fullbacks.
Re: Are we suspect at Corners?
It is important with our fullbacks who tuck in so narrow and have a lot of defending to do at the back post from crosses.FactualFrank wrote:Height won't come into it at all with fullbacks.

EarbyClaret (#11) said it would be interesting in the fight for left back with height maybe coming into SD's thinking (to decide on who will start). This is why I said it won't matter.

He specifically refereed to aerial presence defending set pieces.
Personally don't think it will affect Dyche's thinking too much.

Anyway, he said, "it will be interesting to see how the battle for the LB shirt pans out but that extra aerial presence when defending balls into the box from set plays might come into SD's thinking."
Obviously suggesting he thinks height will come into SD's thinking when deciding between them both. Hence my post that I don't think it will matter.

Re: Are we suspect at Corners?
I was just going off what I found online - the vast majority of which suggests Taylor is 5ft 9in and Pieters is 6ft 0in
My point is, that if SD felt that in all other aspects of their game there was little to choose between them - then he would opt for the taller player as this would probably enable us to better defend aerial balls into the box.
I have no idea how the two measure up against each other in terms of the criteria used to determine selection.
However, with a clean sheet and two assists (he's bound to claim the one for the first goal) coupled with SD's "it's your shirt to lose" philosophy I think it will take a serious dip in form/injury to displace Pieters as it stands.

Looking at this picture, if Taylor is 5'9 then what does that make Ben Mee? 5'8? And Long 5'10?
