Ashley Barnes question
Ash has scored 39 goals for us:37 league, 1 fa cup & 1 europe.
4 were pens and 2 were flukes but for how many has he taken more than 2 touches?

Winner. Possibility of a 3 away to Spurs but it was a bobble.Hibsclaret wrote:None
32,inc pens, were single touch. 7 headers, 3 left foot & 22 right.
If he doesn’t have to think he’s deadly.
Re: Ashley Barnes question
Interesting stat. Was nice to see MOTD showing his improvment curve. Could well get 15 this season with that start!

Re: Ashley Barnes question
He’s always been someone you would describe as a scorer of great goals rather than a great goal scorer. However, the year on year stats shown on MOTD highlight he is moving nearer to being defined as a great goal scorer.

I’ll be the first to admit I thought it would be Barnes Jay would dislodge as I do think he will get 1 of those 2 spots but Saturday reminded me of the absolute monster of a player Ash is

Re: Ashley Barnes question
I never expected SD to break the Wood-Barnes partnership. Just as he wouldn't have dropped Taylor had he not been injured. Very sound man management from him.Burnley1989 wrote:I’ll be the first to admit I thought it would be Barnes Jay would dislodge as I do think he will get 1 of those 2 spots but Saturday reminded me of the absolute monster of a player Ash is
99.9% of football fans see players on paper, they don't take into account the morale, which is huge. SD did right by sticking with the players that did so well for him last season which is why Jay was on the bench - and will continue to be on the bench until something happens. Drinkwater will be on the bench when he's fit.
Re: Ashley Barnes question
I've no idea but it made me think about the Swansea player shaking his hand before the 2nd half kicked off.

Re: Ashley Barnes question
The guy epitomises everything we are about as a football club. There have been many fantastic players through the doors over the last few years but no one comes close to Ashley in epitomising everything we are about. Absolutely love the guy. He has developed so much. 3 or 4 years ago I worried each time he was on the pitch as he played so close to the edge I always felt he was at risk of a red card. He has grown so much and become much cleverer in his game. The finishing has always been there as shown against Wigan in his 1st season. I dont think there are many as clinical as he is.
What other player in the top flight would even considering buying a minibus to ferry players to and from training. Mr Burnley for me

There were one or two surprises when I predicted in my match preview that Barnes & Wood would start but they did so well together last season I thought Dyche would stick with them.FactualFrank wrote:I never expected SD to break the Wood-Barnes partnership.

They were on fire last season and I think he probably regrets not getting them together earlier in the campaign tbh.
They don’t play like any other pair in the prem which makes them very awkward to handle.

Re: Ashley Barnes question
Southampton fans are critical of their goalkeeper for letting the first goal through his legs, but there were two factors that made it harder than it looked: one, Barnes hit it very early, while it was still bouncing up after the first bounce, which meant the keeper had no time to set himself; and two, it was hit very hard which means the goalkeeper didn't have time to react.

Don't underestimate Ashley's skill. The way he controlled the ball on his thigh, in difficult conditions, was first class.

Re: Ashley Barnes question
There arent many players who can stop a ball dead like Ashley. His control of long balls is unbelievable. The way he can trap it, or cushion it to bring it under control is not matched by many. He is so much more than opposing teams supporters seeJuan Tanamera wrote:Don't underestimate Ashley's skill. The way he controlled the ball on his thigh, in difficult conditions, was first class.

Ashley kicked it between his legs (Southampton fans know Gunn is bandy legged)

Not sure if this is most appropriate thread to put this on, but it was noticeable on MOTD last night how few of all club’s new signings started yesterday.FactualFrank wrote:I never expected SD to break the Wood-Barnes partnership. Some of our fans seemed to want about half a dozen new faces to walk straight into the team.

That's my point TFC, Dyche (and many managers) don't just allow players to sign up and walk in - they have to work their balls off to get in. Rightly so.TheFamilyCat wrote:Not sure if this is most appropriate thread to put this on, but it was noticeable on MOTD last night how few of all club’s new signings started yesterday.

The number of our posters on here who wanted Jay to start ahead of Barnes is frightening. What - off a few friendlies? Give over. Wood and Barnes stays because of what they did last season. Friendlies are there to give new players minutes and get players up to speed.

Re: Ashley Barnes question
I’m biased as I’m a Burnley fan and clearly in love with Ashley Barnes, but I do genuinely feel he should be under consideration for an England squad place.
Kane, Rashford are obvious, after that you’re looking at the likes of Callum Wilson etc and I feel Barnes record over the last two seasons and the start of this is comparable to any. He deserves a shot - and he’s such a pest, people cannot handle him.

Bingo…….Our ‘Bashley’ is the heart and soul of what the current Clarets are all about. He’s not the most naturally skilled player, but the guy shows up for work EVERY day and give it his all. Opposing defenders must hate playing against him, an old style striker in the Andy Lochead mold, arguably Dyche’s best signing. A true team player.

I know this is a positive post so not a criticism, but I don’t buy comments about Barnes not being the most naturally skilled. He’s easily one of the most technically gifted players at Burnley. The fact that he likes to mix it up shouldn’t deter from that. Rashford's record is slightly better in terms of goals per game but they're very similar and Rashford is much younger.

Interesting stats, but how many chances did Rashford need to got those goals?,and how many were penalties?.Tall Paul wrote:Rashford has 27 PL goals in 111 games

Rashford's record is slightly better in terms of goals per game but they're very similar and Rashford is much younger.
Barnes doesn't often miss when he gets a sight of goal, take Saturday he had 3 chances, buried 2 of them and hit the woodwork from a narrow angle with the 3rd.
Rashford took his goal really well yesterday and hopefully for England and Man Utd this will be his season to shine,Lukaku's out the door now so he'll be the main man for them.
Despite scoring a brace Ash doesn't feature in Garth Crook's team of the week,he's got Aubameyang,Kane and Sterling up front.
The latter two fair enough, but Aubameyang was pretty quiet on Tyneside, his goal apart.
The biggest compliment towards Barnes is defenders hate playing against him.
For a guy who cost less than a million to be averaging 1 in 4 in the PL is amazing, and crucially his strike rate is improving year-on-year,wouldn't surprise me if he wasn't far off 1 in 2 this season.
And he's also scored against all the big boys, arguably Sean's most important signing, and there's been some good ones down the years.

It’s clear to see, as even when he’s got no chance of winning the bell he’s very clever with his backing in, and his (to quote my Dad) “using his arse and his arms”.ClaretTony wrote:Ben Mee was asked about Barnes after Saturday’s game. He said he’s a nightmare to play against.
His entire body makes him the player he is rather than just relying on pace/touch (albeit, his touch is fantastic, be that with chest, toe or knee - he can take any ball down).
Massive fan of him and it’s been great seeing his improvement year on year. Absolutely priceless to us.
Re: Ashley Barnes question
Just had a look and those stats don't include this weekend, so they both have 2 more goals from one more appearance.tiger76 wrote:Interesting stats, but how many chances did Rashford need to got those goals?,and how many were penalties?.
Rashford's 29 goals have come from 209 shots with just one penalty and Barnes' has taken 240 shots for his 34 goals with 4 penalties. So, again pretty similar with Rashford slightly better.

When we first signed him I never thought it possible that he would become as good as he has. On the subject of using his arse and arms, there was no one better at it than Kenny Dalglish.jedi_master wrote:It’s clear to see, as even when he’s got no chance of winning the bell he’s very clever with his backing in, and his (to quote my Dad) “using his arse and his arms”.
