Amazing photo from 1929. Football was massive even back then but Burnley were struggling in Division One. We narrowly avoided relegation for the second successive season, finishing 19th both times. It was a short reprieve though and we were relegated the next season 1929/30.

One positive though was the emergence of our centre-forward George Beel, he scored 30 league goals in the season the photo was taken and incredibly scored 35 goals the previous season in a side that was struggling.

We should recreate that picture at a game this season! Everyone in flat caps!

I’ve always loved that pic with the flat caps. Think it might have been in the Vintage Claret book in the 1970s when I first saw it.

Thanks. The reason I asked is that I worked directly behind that shop ( on dugdale st ) from 1962 and then it was a high quality clothing shop called Jaeger. But wouldnt have thought it was there in 1929 although the company was formed in 1890`s

Difficult to read but you could easily think it was Jaeger. I suspect it wouldn’t have been though so long ago.

That machine is actually called a Verti-Drain (a Dutch design) and punches holes in the ground. This is for aeration and is sometimes followed by an application of sand or sandy material which is then brushed into the holes to keep them open so improving surface drainage - the biggest issue for winter games pitches. It has no connection with sowing grass which is done by some sort of seed drill.

What's clever about the design is it punches the holes vertically in a similar way to forking the ground by hand.

Thanks for that information Hipper, interesting to know how they actually get the Turf looking and playing as good as they do, I was actually photographing a wedding when I snapped this.

I have actually now changed the photo on my flickr to reflect what you have said.

Cheers

Your last ? Is Ray Ternent

I’m guessing the photo above was us congratulating Spurs on their Championship in their double year.

Brilliant it most certainly is, as are the other two photos in W_C_Z's latest contribution.

Agree with Tricky Trevor that the middle one must be our recognition of Tottenham's successful 1960/61 season. Typical of the humility and sportsmanship of our Club at the time. It was on the Turf towards the end of April'61 when presumably Spurs had already wrapped up the Division One title. We still had two league games after that and we actually beat Spurs 4-2 on the day.

They had beaten us in the FA Cup semi-final in March and went on to win the Final in May.

As for the last photo....Len Kinsella is the player next to Ralph Coates on the back row and Billy Gaskill is between Brian O'Neil and Dave Merrington on the front row.

Goodness knows exactly what the occasion is. Perhaps W_C_Z can enlighten us.

So, Willie Morgan had already played 62 games for our first team by the time of this U21's tour of Germany in the summer of 1965.

Who is our keeper ?

The very last photo is fascinating me. Is this from our European tour in May 1914 following our FA Cup win ?

Surely that has to be Jerry Dawson our keeper with the most ever appearances for our Club ?

Unbelievable pic.

Where's Tommy Boyle !!

Incredibe collection of photos you have at your disposal W_C_Z.

Is it possible you were official photographer for the Club at some point ?
