Re: Burnley F C in pictures
Willie was 17 years old when he arrived here, but he looks more like 14 in the photo!!
Reputed to be the first British player to have his own fan club. He replaced John Connelly in our team in the early sixties and later both John and then Willie left us for Man Utd, both terrific players and yet completely different in style.
Dave Thomas, another great servant to our Club before leaving for QPR in 1972.

Ralphy, great player and a very humble man. One of the very best.
Two of my favourite goals of Ralph's, against Liverpool on the Turf in '66 when we beat them 2-0 and against Napoli the following January when he played centre-forward and scored in our 3-0 win.

How do you remember goals that were scored over 50 years ago,the memories of some posters on here amazes me,I find it hard to remember last seasons goals.Royboyclaret wrote:Ralphy, great player and a very humble man. One of the very best.

Steve, great memories last forever. That win against Liverpool was very special, Irvine scored the first with the best header I've ever seen from the edge of the box and then Ralphy ran almost the length of the pitch before lobbing the ball over Tommy Lawrence for the second.Steve1956 wrote:How do you remember goals that were scored over 50 years ago,the memories of some posters on here amazes me,I find it hard to remember last seasons goals.

I’ve posted before about loving the drama of a solo breakaway goal, Hamilton against PNE, Skippy against Celtic but the Ralph one against Liverpool is my favourite. 2-0 against the Champions in waiting and put us second, I believe. Shame we lost second after the battle of Turf Moor.Royboyclaret wrote:Steve, great memories last forever. I’m guessing you were born in ‘56? I was born in ‘53 and can remember so many goals from the 60s & 70s but when I did the thread about Ashley earlier I had to check how many touches he had for the first! It’s an age thing.Steve1956 wrote:How do you remember goals that were scored over 50 years ago,the memories of some posters on here amazes me,I find it hard to remember last seasons goals.

The memory is amazing...I can remember many goals from the 70's but struggle with results, let alone goals from last season....that despite watching them over and over again on TV etc.Steve1956 wrote:How do you remember goals that were scored over 50 years ago,the memories of some posters on here amazes me,I find it hard to remember last seasons goals.
I'll never forget 2 specific goals in 2009 nor a couple in 1987. No prizes for guessing.

Re: Burnley F C in pictures
Oh yes that Liverpool goal was so brilliant in that Ralph picked the ball up near the half way line and had the entire Liverpool midfield and defence in front of him to overcome.Royboyclaret wrote:Ralphy, great player and a very humble man. One of the very best.
Two of my favourite goals of Ralph's, against Liverpool on the Turf in '66 when we beat them 2-0 and against Napoli the following January when he played centre-forward and scored in our 3-0 win.
The pitch was muddy as it often was in those days and he ploughed is way past defender and defender, I was expecting he would be brought down any minute bet he maintained his balance to finally chip Lawrence the Pool goalkeeper with the giant Yeats and Tommy Smith bearing down on him.
A truly wonderful goal.
Re: Burnley F C in pictures
Not sure he ever played in the first team and don’t know a lot (anything) about him, but that’s who it is. Pic probably 1959 so aged about 16.turfytopper wrote:Impressive . Re: Burnley F C in pictures
He didn't play in the first team - the other two did though and with huge success. Their debuts came just over a month apart. They remain part of my favourite ever forward line of Morgan, Lochhead, Irvine, Harris, Coates from the 1965/66 season. What a season that was.Oo_George wrote:Not sure he ever played in the first team and don’t know a lot (anything) about him, but that’s who it is. Pic probably 1959 so aged about 16.

That would have been the 1976/77 team picture following relegation. Three of those players no longer with us and two, so sadly, passed away in their 50s.cricketfield73 wrote:

Gonna be a bit later than that, George, because Willie Morgan only arrived here in October '61. So either late '61 or even '62 when Morgan would have been 17 years old.Oo_George wrote:Not sure he ever played in the first team and don’t know a lot (anything) about him, but that’s who it is. Derek Chambers is a name that rings a bell but he certainly never featured in the first team.

Clarets collection does not include Chambers, so he never played for the First team. Dwight is the last player to be included due to his appearance for us in the last match of 2017-18 season. As CT says Willie joined us in 1960 on amateur terms turning Pro in 1961

On that Tottenham pic, of course we played them again some seven weeks later in the FA Cup Final.
Between the league game on the Turf and the Wembley final we played 13 League and Cup games in those few short weeks. No wonder we were knackered by the time May 5th came round.

Joe Neenan is the goalkeeper in the centre and the one on his left, to our right, is Tony Woodworth whose only league appearance was the 6-0 home defeat against Hereford. Not sure who the other is. That was my first ever team, first ever strip and first ever Burnley poster that adorned my bedroom wall. Off the back of a football magazine, I would guess almost certainly Shoot as that is what I bought back then (although I switched to ‘Match’ when that came out).cricketfield73 wrote:

Edit - just seen it says ‘Shoot’ at the bottom right of the picture so that confirms that.

What’s strikes me seeing these two team pics together is that although they’re only a few years apart one looks 30 years more modern than the other.
