League Cup should be scrapped
Just looking through some of the scores and a couple of surprises so looked at the line ups. Absolutely shocking. League 2 outfits playing teams with 5 or 6 kids. No intention of trying to win (dont blame them, small budgets, extra games). It is only there for the benefit of the top 6 deciding who thinks it is most important when all other trophies may be out of their reach.
Absolute waste of time and I am sure no club would mourn its loss.

I think some of the smaller clubs would disagree with you

look at some of the Champions League scores tonight, some huge shocks as we stand

The FA Cup winners should get a champions league place and the league cup winners a UEFA cup place.Steve1956 wrote:Bit like the FA Cup,no one cares.
I’d also make it obligatory that the BBC shows the FA Cup Toad to Wembley and has cameras on the team bus on the way to the ground, for a 3pm kick off!!
I used to love FA Cup Final day.

It's lost it's magic, and usually the final is played by two top six sides who have no chance of winning the league, the magic has gone, maybe United not even entering it one year escalated its decline.DCWat wrote:The FA Cup winners should get a champions league place and the league cup winners a UEFA cup place.

To be fair it got a bit boring when they trotted the same toad out year after year. I mean I like Wind in the Willows but watching Mr Toad drive to Wembley year after year got very dull.DCWat wrote:The FA Cup winners should get a champions league place and the league cup winners a UEFA cup place.

Re: League Cup should be scrapped
Think it was Andy Holt last year that tweeted about the costs involved and how The lower teams unless they draw a big team are often running at a loss being in the tournament. They need to get to the 4th round before it becomes worth it for them and even then they often need that big tieboatshed bill wrote:I think some of the smaller clubs would disagree with you
Re: League Cup should be scrapped
It’d be bloody magic if we made a final!
We will never win the top division again, unless something drastically changes. There is though, always an outside chance of a cup. A favourable draw and who knows? Just look at Wigan.
It may have lost some magic but there’s still enough there to make me want us to reach a final, and to to a lesser extent, the league cup too.

Re: League Cup should be scrapped
Personally feel it should be regionalised in some way. The costs and hassle involved for 2nd division teams who are already playing 46 games and then with trips in the week for cup matches. Its not like they get planes like some of the top clubs will. Long bus journeys which have been proven not to benficial in players recovery from matches. Often causing strains because of the posture of the seats. If it was regionalised local derbies would attract more fans making it worth it.
I am not sure of the answer but Oldham playing Blackburn should be a game for them but Oldham themselves are fielding about 7 reserves/youngsters. What is the point

The league cup is split north and south, in early rounds, isn’t it?Cleveleys_claret wrote:Personally feel it should be regionalised in some way. Has anyone won all four divisions, the fa cup and the league cup?
Can only be one of half a dozen. Maybe Wolves? I dunno.

A cup final in February? No thanks.
They should do everything possible to reinvigorate the FA Cup but the league cup is a waste of time IMO.

Re: League Cup should be scrapped
I agree with the OP. Sports science has advanced so much that they have proved beyond doubt that footballers can't play 45 games a season, and presumably never could. (Sounds Irish, I know, but they're the experts.)
So scrap the League Cup, play about 4 more league games before Christmas, and play the FA Cup properly with replays - including the final if needed.

Re: League Cup should be scrapped
A curious fact about the EFL Cup is that it has never been won by a member of the EFL. When the Premier League broke away from the Football League in 1992, Premier League clubs were allowed to continue playing in the EFL Cup, and every year since then one of them has won the EFL Cup. For 15 years out of the last 20 it has been won by a selection of the biggest and most popular clubs in England Manchester City (4), Manchester United (4), Liverpool (3), Chelsea (3) and Tottenham (1).
Re: League Cup should be scrapped
I accept it's getting harder but in the past 10 or 12 years Swansea and Birmingham have won it, and Sunderland and Cardiff have reached the final so it's ridiculous to suggest there's no point us making any effort in it.
Re: League Cup should be scrapped
League Cup with just EFL clubs and a place in Europe, would add considerably to the value of that league.

Staging an EFL Cup that a member of the EFL never wins is a bit strange really.

Re: League Cup should be scrapped
I would have two solutions: either all clubs involved in European competition would not be eligible, or, to go further, all premier league teams would not be eligible, as technically, it is the Football League's trophy and PL teams are not members of the FL.
I'm more in favour of the first option. Taking out the European teams (essentially the Big Six plus one other) would give a club like us a properly realistic chance of a trophy each season and thus European involvement.
I don't think the top 6 take the EFL cup particularly seriously, and regard it as a minor trophy below the PL, Champions League/Europa League, and FA Cup.

Re: League Cup should be scrapped
The top 6 do take it seriously these days. As they do the Europa. With only 4 CL spots and the title/CL out of the hands for 3/4 of them. The LC is obviously down the list of priorities but the still want it.
Gone are the days of Wenger playing 11 kids.

Re: League Cup should be scrapped
The big clubs have such good squads nowadays someone like City can change their full 11 and still put out a quality side full of internationals.

Re: League Cup should be scrapped
The last 6 EFL Cup Finals have seen the big six dominate.
2014 Manchester City 3–1 Sunderland
2015 Chelsea 2–0 Tottenham Hotspur
2016 Manchester City 1–1 Liverpool
2017 Manchester United 3–2 Southampton
2018 Manchester City 3–0 Arsenal
2019 Manchester City 0–0 Chelsea
So clearly they do regard it as silverware worth winning, that in itself is a good mentality to instil in your squad, yes it obviously helps that they have deep squad reserves, but surely BFC are not getting to the stage where we can at least try to get through the earlier rounds.and see what the draw then throws our way.
Clearly our number one priority is retaining PL status, but if we're not going to take either domestic cup seriously,we might as well play the U23s.and not risk any injuries.
Sunderland at home should be a winnable tie whatever XI Sean puts out,the carrot of PL starts could also be dangled to spur the back up players on.
