I think the accidental handball rule is crazy, but if you're going to disallow the Wolves goal last week, then you have to disallow the Jesus goal.

I’m not a fan of VAR. but ultimately the players know the rules and everyone voted for it.

The handball rule makes sense too. Because there is no grey area. Handballs handball. Intentional or otherwise. And it’s the best rule you can have because it’s not subjective.

US sports have been using some sort of video replay for years, so I'm used to things being shown on video.... tight call but looks like they are really going by the book for VAR.

But that's fair enough,if they don't go by the book, that's when the inconsistencies creep in.as long as everyone knows the rules they can't complain.

Imagine if that City 'goal' had stood today,i think Nuno would have been hopping mad,and with good reason after the decision at Leicester.

Happy enough for those kinds of goals to be ruled out. Why should you be allowed to gain an advantage by using your arm which leads to a goal? All this ‘it’s unfair on City’ stuff is b0llocks. Handball hasn’t been for deliberate handball for years so I’m more than happy for accidental handball to be penalised if it gives the attacking team and advantage leading to a goal.

How many Spurs players appealed for handball? None!
Did the officials think that there had been a handball? No
Did the commentary team think, in real time, that there had been a handball? No

However, a guy watching a tv screen some 220 miles away in the middle of an industrial estate on the outskirts of Uxbridge decided that the ball had been handled so, instead of talking about a decent game of football everyone is talking about VAR!! As Steve1956 says "The game is ruined"

Agree.

Providing the defending team get penalised in the same way when they save a shot that is on target with their hand. We shall see whether that happens for fairness. Why should the defending team have a handball advantage?

Happened to Wolves, now City. It’ll happen to us and everyone else over the season. So every goal celebration by March / April will be a muted cheer and then a couple of minutes waiting for the big screen to give us the opinion that counts.

Loads of people like this, which is fine but more than likely my last season watching Burnley live. Non league and Match of the Day from here on I think.

Whilst I think that the "any contact is handball" seems harsh it is the only way. If the decision was left to a subjective call we would be no further forward and I believe that the Wolves goal would have been disallowed and the City one would have been given. Because the big team favouritism has always been there and always will.

The question how many players appealed is total nonsense though. Surely you know that as an ex-referee?

There’s lots of incidents that aren’t seen in real time or by the naked eye - that’s one of the purposes of VAR - whether you like it or not.

I’m not sure of the exact law but I agree that a shot stopped on the line for example by an accidental handball should result in a penalty kick. I wouldn’t apply it to any shot on target blocked by an arm though.

Turn that around though - if that ball was going to Jesus, the 2 players challenged for the header, and it flicked of the Spurs player's arm - there would have been no VAR review, and no penalty awarded, because there's a black and white rule for attacking, saying if it hits the hand accidental or not it will be ruled out, but that the old rule for defenders having to be deliberate is still in place.

Yes but unfortunately that’s the way it is because there is no way to know for certain if the defending team’s accidental handball has stopped a goal unless it is in a clear scenario like on the goal line.

It’s not perfect but I’m happy with how the law is being applied.

If you think that it is rubbish asking how many players appealed you have obviously not refereed because Spurs players, havng conceded that goal, would have been looking for any excuse for it to be disallowed. I shall ask another question ---how many Spurs fans appealed for handball?
My argument about VAR is that it is not used for every decision because they are saying that one decision is more important than another depending upon where it happens on the field.

"I’m not sure of the exact law but I agree that a shot stopped on the line for example by an accidental handball should result in a penalty kick. I wouldn’t apply it to any shot on target blocked by an arm though."

That is also one of the purposes of VAR ---whether you like it or not! You will see players going into a sliding tackle with their arms on the deck for balance, the ball will hit their hand and a penalty will be awarded under VAR review ---it is the Law because they will deem that the arms are not in a natural position.

I see no reason why the VAR can’t decide if a shot is likely to go in or not if it is on target and award a pen. The issue is subjectivity though so they should perhaps change the law to be if the defence accidentally handle a ball that is on target in the 6 yard box it is a pen. At the minute I think the defence has an advantage on these sort of decisions.

How is it in any way relevant whether the players or fans saw the offence and appealed?

Forget it --players and fans never appeal for anything so it is totally irrelevant to expect that they woud start now.
I hold my hand up and look forward to many quiet games in the future and I also look forward to no players ever approaching the match officials over any decision ---appealing ---don't bother me now --it's not allowed.

So you're upset because VAR did its job and ruled out a goal thanks to a handball?
No one needs to appeal it if VAR spots something that's happened to fast for the officials to see, that's kind of the point of it last time I checked.
