Didn’t do himself any favours with his book but was a genuinely world class player for the majority of his career.

Aye, that whole saga with Arsenal and Chelsea, one of the most bitter and messy deals in the PL at the time, you're right, the book poured petrol on the whole saga, what is it with these 'tell all' autobiographies? Seemed to be all the rage back then.
Here's a summary of that deal,

Cashley was great tabloid fodder. Just after he’d done the dirty on Cheryl I remember thinking surely he can’t give them any more ammunition, then he went and shot a kid on work experience point blank with an air rifle  some player mind ...

Very good player given an unfair rap by many fans.

Part of a generation that could’ve been one of the greatest international sides ever.

As good a left back I can think of. Well apart from Brian Easton.

I think I'm still recovering from believing in that 2000's England team as much as I did. Fully bought into that 'Golden generation' hype...and it was warranted to an extent, but when it came down to it, talk about deflation...
Last year recaptured at least some of the England magic I had in 96-02, but it didn't feel the same. I put it down to me getting older but then I think of how wrapped up in magic I've been with Burnley during the Dyche era, similar to that of the 90s when I was a teen, so it can't be that. Still got bridges to build with England in my head, sad act that I might be, I love the spectacle of it all.

Stopped bothering with England after Africa.
I'll watch the odd bit if a Burnley player is making their debut but that's it for me.

I was one of the suckers who followed that golden generation all over Europe that Cole was a massive part of. I was/ am not interested in tabloid rubbish, he was for me consistently the best in the world in his position for ten years.

As for England. I was watching it back and the decisions we got against us especially in 2004 in Lisbon were ridiculous. That “golden generation” would take the current team to the cleaners.

Cole was asked and did visit a friend of mines son who has Krohn's disease whilst he was in hospital. He stayed a fair time and made a young boy very happy.

So he's not all bad!

The 'golden generation' hype was nowt to do with him, although he lived up to it anyway, arguably more than the rest. The best left back in the world for a while, England's best player in that QF in 2006 and did better against peak Ronaldo than most.

Obviously there's the whole shooting a lad in the face thing, cheating on poor Ms Cole with an absolute minger and 'that' book. But still, top player.
