Amazing turnaround by England. Warner and Lasagne looked well set at 130-2. Archer seemed to bowl within himself yet took six fer

Justifiably. We weren't bowling well. Can't complain at the final score, but if we'd bowled as we did after tea they could have been out for around 100.

Decent captaincy (eventually) from Root today, called the toss right, let his fast bowlers loose at the end after a mid-afternoon drift. Now needs to score some runs and help level the series.

Saw this on the Beeb site.

.. Australia lost their last eight wickets for 43 runs; Bob Willis took 8-43 for England in the famous 1981 Headingley Ashes Test...

Don't you just love the stats cricket throws up.

I think the smart money will be waiting to see how we bat, rather than crowing about mopping up the Aussie tail on a wicket with seam swing and a distinctly erratic bounce....in dodgy light. Maybe we will make hay...but maybe we will find 200 is beyond us.

Archer did ok..and Broad came through in the end...but there was some real aimless dross early on.

Stokes and Woakes in particular were poor.

Woakes has played a lot of cricket this summer and might need a rest at Old Trafford.

Bringing in Sam Curran would make sense for the next test. Arguable that Stokes could move to 4 if Denly fails again here and Jimmy is fit, let Stokes concentrate on his batting which is in superb nick.

Are you serious ???..

A fit Anderson walks into any test team in the world..still...absolutely no question about it. Archer may have the tools to provide a great foil for Jimmy, but I'sorry Gww...there isnt anything else around the counties that could lace his boots.

Anderson is one of the few who actually do something with every ball...tricky job..and 2 way control is hard to master.......some of these clowns and gym bunnies cant master direction whilst bowling fast medium and doing next to nothing with the ball.

Anderson in for Woakes would be the likely scenario.

A fast bowling quartet of a fit Jimmy Anderson, Broad, Archer and Stokes with Leach as the spinner would be an exciting prospect.

We would miss Woakes more for his very good and disciplined batting at number 8 than his bowling at the minute.

Therein lies the problem, you wouldn’t want to weaken the batting more than it already is tbh

This is why the Moeen "enigma" is so sad and problematic at present.
Over the past few years his bowling has been effective, but it's his lower order runs batting at 7 or 8 that have been crucial.
Get well soon Moeen!

Without looking at stats, Sam Curran seems to have come to the rescue far more than Ali in recent times.

Stokes needs to play as a batsman at 4 and occasional bowler for me.

Leach did alright at Lords but a fit Jimmy would bowl before a spinner in England any day of the week. The Windies did alright with a pace attack and few overs from Hooper, which Root could do.

If Anderson is fit there is no way he can be left out.

Old Trafford will be the quickest and hardest pitch that is played on in this tour so I would be tempted to leave out either Woakes or Leach.

If the ball is moving about at Manchester then an attack of Anderson, Broad, Archer and Stokes would be a formidable one.

If we bowl Australia out cheaply twice in this test with an in-form bowling attack it will be quite a gamble to bring James Anderson in at Old Trafford bearing in mind how little game time he's had.
A very difficult decision IMO if he declares himself fit.

Archer is getting over bowled with no Jimmy in there and you don't want to over bowl Jimmy on his comeback.

So an extra seamer in there makes sense.

Agree with all that but who do you drop. It’s a massively hard call. Maybe butler, but whatever rational thing you do to get him back in you’re gonna be weakening an already fragile batting lineup. Hence why, especially given he might pull up again, it’s hard to simply slot him back in.

Well surprise surprise no Steve Smith and the Aussies can't muster 200 would've thought it,they should be thankful to Warner and Labuschagne for getting them a semi decent total, the rest contributed nothing.

Weather looks set fare for today and beyond so there's no excuse for England not to build a big 1st innings lead, about time Root showed his quality in this series.

It's simple just bat all day, even with a truncated 1st day there is loads of time left in this match, don't go chasing runs let the bowlers bowl to you and scoring will be easier,Warner/Labuschagne showed in their partnership that you can move the scoreboard on quickly once you get set.

England need 2/3 good partnerships and one of the top 5 to go big,a lead of 150 would be ideal, but knowing this England side they'll make hard work of this advantage Jofra's given them.

I'll be surprised if Woakes plays at OT he wasn't used much at Lords and apparently is carrying a niggle, the key for England is keeping Archer fit and firing,he adds a different edge to the attack, and yesterday showed his adaptability on a slower track,he bowled much fuller and that got him his 6 wickets,Stokes and Woakes would do well to watch and learn,a guy in only his 2nd test match and already he's leading from the front.

I did think Stokes was a shoe in for SPOTY,but if England regain the Ashes and Jofra keeps up this form it'll be a hard call between the pair.

See your point gww but simply dont agree....the batting quality of your number 11 should be irrelevant in test cricket...a total non-consideration.

Its about the guys selected to bat....they need to deliver.

So predictable from Roy,a proper test opener lets that go,he doesn't have a five day mentality i'm afraid.

Can either of these sides bat

Yes that was a rhetorical :?:

The bowling has been top class tbf,but you have to combat that in test cricket.

At this rate England will be bowling again before the end of the day

Denly overturns an LBW decision thank goodness,Hazlewood is reeking havoc with the new cherry.

England just need to ride this spell out and it should become easier i hope.

You can't judge a score until both sides have batted. The Australian score looked well below par but given the propensity for England to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, it may be a half decent score...

Shocking, if it wasnt the norm.
The lack of technique is ridiculous, no moving your front foot to the pitch of the ball, just stand still and slash at it.
There are kids playing U11 cricket who know better than that.
I give up on this lot, they are ****.

I don't disagree but who replaces him,Root has to revert to 4,putting him up to 3 clearly hasn't worked,i'd be tempted to promote Stokes to 3,he's shown that he's got the technique and temperament to play a proper test innings, you could have Roy at 5/6 but he can't open that much is evident.

Who partners Burns at the top of the order,i haven't a clue TBH,but the selectors need to find someone, otherwise England will continually be 2 down for nothing.

The only name that comes to mind is Ollie Pope, but it's a big ask bringing him in mid-way through an Ashes series,he must be on the radar surely,he was called up as Roy's cover so he has to be knocking on the door.

20-3 Burns gone now to a short ball, this is madness,we might even trail on 1st innings at this rate.

I know it's easy to slag Roy off and his technique but if Burns opens you need to balance it with an attack minded batter.

You can't just let bowling attacks bowl at you.

The entire batting line up looks out of nick though, which is a big problem.
