From the BBC saying Joe Root averaged 52 whilst not being captain but 40 since.

Even Geoff is saying he's simply not good enough to be England captain.

Yes Root is a problem as captain but realistically who else?

After the ashes series the England squad needs a complete overhaul.

The first step would be to get the best captain out there from County cricket. Let's not burden anymore star players with it.

People aren't giving enough credit to the Aussie bowlers on this tour. They seem to be on the money all the time. Very rare for freebies.

The only time I remember our batsman being on top was Stokes last few overs before the declaration, when he had a free license to attack at will.

They have been excellent. Line has been immaculate throughout. But England’s technique has been awful and some of the shot selection dire.

I agree that the Aussie bowling attack has been good on this tour, however, it doesn't help that Roy, Burns and Stokes have really got themselves out in this test and Denley has just been added to the list by playing at a ball he could have left alone.

We need to try and bore our way to 150 at least. Chris Tavare knew how to do it.

Pattinson - 2 wickets that the batsman really had to struggle to hit as they were so wide! Denly struggles through and played and missed so many times and then chases a wide one that he could have left well alone.

Embarrassing, AGAIN.

Too many of the batting line up not good enough, and cannot perform regularly and/or under pressure.

Roy
Burns
Denly
And one of the keeper/batsmen shouldn't be near the test side

Sadly theres a couple of others who also haven't been great and living on past glory.

Utter shambles from England's batsmen. The bowlers do their stuff and skittle the convicts only for the surrender monkeys at the top of the order to throw away any chance of making a contest of it. It is as though they get themselves in for a short time then decide it's time to flash at anything wide of the stumps, or play at any short pitched deliveries. I don't know where England go from here, but it would appear we can wave goodbye to the Ashes. Wholesale changes required, starting with the captain and opening batsman.

Whoopee the fifties up just the 6 wickets down, absolute embarrassment this morning thrown the Ashes away after all Jofra's good work yesterday,a penny for his thoughts on this performance with the bat.

This is 5 day Test cricket.
Essentially you want two openers who are capable of batting for a full day, even if they only score at say 2 an over.. If at least one of them does that in most innings then the rest of the team can bat round them.
Of course you might prefer us to just have a quick dart at it and end up 6 down for about 50?

Impossible to follow-on when you're chasing less than 200, but it's a good job they didn't get 279!

Because they won't always go on to bat all day. If they bat 80 balls each for single figures it puts a lot of pressure on the next lads.

I can't remember any decent opening partnerships that had two defensive minded batsman in.

Why would Woakes play at that first ball after lunch, and with a leg trap set?

Spot on. 2 an over gets you to 160 - 180 depending on how many overs you get through. Test match batsmen should have the attitude that I am going to bat all day and you are not getting my wicket. Ours seem to go out and adopt the 1 day mentality, see how many runs I can score in 50 0vers or less. Opening batsmen are there to see of the new ball, get the shine off it and the ball goes softer. Then gives the lower order batsmen in theory an easier task of scoring runs. We have our top order batsmen playing a Botham/Flintoff/Pietersen style of cricket against the new ball. With a predictable outcome.

Hard to see that session as anything other than the one that handed the Ashes to Australia.
Fine bowling indeed but you have to find a way to dig in.
Will be a huge shame if the series is decided after 3 tests.

Roy might as well go out and try and get 30--40 runs off 5 overs than mess around and get out for a few runs.

Has a test match ever been over in 2 days, possibly not in recent times, this one could be,Jofra's coming out at 9,he'd have been expecting to have his feet up today not batting straight after lunch,if he can fashion a stand with Jos here to at least keep England in the game,he'll be in line for a knighthood.

Boycott and Edrich for starters, and arguably Cook and Strauss in more recent times.
But why does it put pressure on anyone?
160 balls (27 overs) takes you well into the afternoon session. By this time they've seen the shine off the ball, the ball is softer, and the bowlers are not as fresh.
Anyway 8 down now playing one-day shots.

Can't disagree with that, maybe we seriously need to consider separating white ball/red ball batting, and pick CC players that can do a job regardless of status.

I wonder if the WC win has gone to one or two English players head's,and they think they are better than what they are in reality.

Whatever this needs to be a wake-up call to the ECB,something's going to have to change radically.

England's test batting line up has been poor for years, they simply havnt been able to replace the good ones who have retired because there simply isn't anyone good enough to replace them....it's the bowlers who have won us matches more often than not

The Ashes have gone. Its about time we started f@cking people off right left and centre now and start the rebuild for the next Ashes. We seem to collapse 1 innings in every 3.

At test level we really are pathetic, it's the worst it's been for years and it needs to drastically change

All out for 67! The lowest English score in test matches at headingley....now the pressure has been put back onto the bowlers who after their 1st inning efforts would have wanted to put their feet up for a couple of days.....really poor but Australia did bowl well to give them credit

I don't think many would regard them as quick scorers, but that misses the point.
The point being that they both valued their wicket beyond anything else, and their focus when opening was to try to get through to lunch and see off the new ball. It didn't faze them at all if they didn't score many so long as they did their job and set a foundation for the others. Once they'd got a few runs on the board then they might play a few shots.
As you say they were class players and class batters put a very high price on their wicket.

Sometimes, when watching professional sport, you see someone have a shocker and you think, “I could do better than that”. I don’t think Ive ever seen an entire team that I could have done better than. Until today.

The only good news so far today is Warner failing again. Given his form in this series, but for the first innings in this test he might have been considered for England.

Not Headingley --England's batsmen.
Since January 2018 we have completed 19 test matches, this one being the 20th we have been involved in. We have been all out for less than 200 on 11 occasions and this includes 4 scores of less than 100 including 58 v New Zealand in March 2018 and 85 v Ireland in July 2019.
The last time we played a test at Headingly we scored 363 and won by an innings against Pakistan.
