There's not a chance that Buttler would get in any of the top ranking Test teams, unless it was as wicket-keeper batsman, so that puts him well outside the top 20.

Stokes deserves this alone what a knock he's nailed on for SPOTY,just shows how brainless the rest of the line-up were.

See these 2 balls out Jack.

Immense from Stokes. Great support from Leach. The rest of the batsmen need to learn lessons from this.

Brilliant for the series.
But let's not forget that we've batted abysmally for most of this match.

Good job it's 10 days till the next test,Stokes will need a breather,still :?: marks over England's batting,but the momentum's with them,Stokes Ashes ala Beefy in 81.

Just shows when they're under pressure this Aussie team can crumble, how many mistakes did they make in that last hour, missed the run-out,dropped catches,England got lucky with the LB call, but if you burn your reviews that can happen.

Who would you drop :?: Roy,Bairstow and Buttler are in the most danger,Bairstow played a good hand in the 2nd innings,he should have gone on admittedly, and Denly showed he can bat in test cricket.

If Roy's going to play at OT,he'll have to bat down the order, you could maybe move Denly up to open, and where does Root bat.

As you say one for the selectors.that's what they're paid for.

Stokes will get all the plaudits but I bet Leach is feeling so proud after that. His innings was every bit as important.

Leaving out Roy and Buttler shouldn't be a hard decision.
Bairstow's proved himself in the past, but his keeping is not up to scratch t present, (if it ever was).
I'd bring Foakes in for Buttler (with the gloves)
Denley to open, and I've been suggesting Stokes at 3 since last season. It's now time to give it a go.
Root at 4, probably Pope at 5, Bairstow 6, Foakes 7.
Then it's whether you bring in Anderson.
Based on this test you'd have to omit Woakes to do that, but that gives us rather a long tail.

Absolutely incredible: THE greatest of games. Stokes was phenomenal with the bat, BUT don’t ignore the contribution he made with the ball during the last session on day two. That spell, where he literally ran himself into the ground, kept us in the game.

Woakes hasn't bowled much in the last 2 tests anyway,so IF Jimmy's fit he'll have to be considered.

The batters have to take lessons from this match if you stay in and wear their quicks down, then it becomes easier, but you have to dig in first, even in the 2nd innings there was some poor shots, but Stokes dug them out of a hole.

A top 5 of

Burns
Denly
Stokes
Root
Pope

Looks more secure, but apparently they won't put Stokes at 3 due to him being goosed from his bowling,he's fit but you can't expect him to do everything.

There will be a game sooner or later where Ben doesn't perform,so other players will have to step up to the mark.

I sort of agree with that but if Anderson is fully fit, and you've got Archer and Broad, ,(+Leach), then hopefully he shouldn't be needed to bowl long spells.

He had 2 from about 80 balls. Kept his nerve, rode his luck, but as the saying goes you earn your own luck.

A knighthood was on the cards for Stokes after his WC heroics,i'd argue that today's effort was even better, the state of the game and series, and importantly the field was set well back and he still found a way to score boundaries,in an ODI contest the fielding restrictions would have applied making it easier for the batsman.

It just shows you play the situation, when Stokes went out to bat last night,he was intent on preserving his wicket at all costs, hence why he scored 2 from 50 deliveries, even 1st thing this morning he was selective over what deliveries to attack, and which he could leave,it was only when Jofra came in at number 9 that he went through the gears, and obviously once Jack Leach walked to the middle,Ben decided to flick the switch and unleash his range of strokes.

But they are good cricketers let's not give up on them just yet.

I confess to not rating Ben Stokes as high as some people but wow it's changed slightly after this test.

His 14 overs on the bounce on Friday night dragged the team out of the sorrow/shame they had at being bowled out for 67, A real leader of men.

Then he produces the best innings ever under huge pressure.

What a top man

True but they need to do that more often, and in the 1st innings also, one swallow doesn't make a summer.

That performance shows they can do it,so there's no excuses now.
