Phil Lynott
Remembering Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy who was born on this date 70 years ago in West Bromwich - he grew up in Dublin though with his grandparents. He remained close to his mum Philomena throughout his life. He formed Thin Lizzy in 1969.
[whiskey in the jar, the boys are back in town, jailbreak, waiting for an alibi] - he teamed up early on with Gary Moore..he has a really interesting life-story, loads of stuff online, some real difficulties in his life but what a lively character....he married the daughter of Lesley Crowther [Crackerjack !] he was a big fan of MUFC and good mates with George Best. [maybe not the ideal liaison]....he was a very proud Dubliner as well.
Lynott developed a serious alcohol and drug dependency, in his later years particularly heroin. He collapsed on Christmas Day 1985 at his home in Kew. He died of pneumonia and heart failure in early 1986 at the age of 36. There is a statue of him in Harry St, just off Grafton St, Dublin.
I guess he could have done a great deal more - definitely one that went too early.
'Sarah' written for his daughter Sarah.

Saw Thin Lizzy at Liverpool, probably 1979. The fans clearly enjoy the show.

Re: Phil Lynott
I have tickets to see Black Star Riders in October at Cambridge Corn Exchange. Most of the band are ex Thin Lizzy, which I discovered after I heard one of their albums and noted they sounded very much like Thin Lizzy. They are supported by Stone Broken (never heard anything of theirs) and a real bonus for me, Wayward Sons fronted by ex Little Angels frontman Toby Jepson. In fact, I bought the tickets primarily so see Wayward Sons, the other 2 bands are the bonus, but Black Star Riders are excellent.

Re: Phil Lynott
Just watched a clip of Thin Lizzy on tv on Saturday evening. The Yesterday channel is re (re re re)-running the old BBC series "Guitar Heroes at the BBC". They had a clip of the band doing The Boys Are Back in Town- I think on Top of the Pops.
I never saw them live, just never caught them playing near to me on a convenient date.
I never realized Lynott was chummy with George Best & a United fan.

Re: Phil Lynott
I met Phil Lynott in 1985 in Spain. I was lucky enough to see play twice. Once a jamming session at a bar in Puerto Banus and again a couple of nights later in a club with his band.
I also spent a night drinking at the bar with him. Probably for about 6 hours. We were just sat there mostly alone and drinking. Occasionally he would doctor the Bacardi which seemed to help me stay awake all night.
After a very enjoyable and interesting time we went our separate ways at around 8am.
A great bloke and hugely talented, very much a shame when he died.

Re: Phil Lynott
I know an old face from Rochdale who used to know a lot of the old boys from north manchester.
He once told me a story about how the song "waiting for an alibi" came about
Someone on a fairly serious charge was locked up, waiting for Lynott to corroborate his whereabouts before the police would release him.
It seems a few of his songs were inspired by his time round that way
Edit to say, I'm sure my pal said his mum used to own a pub somewhere in manchester

One of my favourite bands, saw them three times. Twice on the same tour.
Great shame he left us so young.

Great band. Saw them at the Greyhound pub on Fulham Palace Road Fulham not long after they arrived from Ireland in the early 1970s. Absolutely brilliant live. The pub was packed out.

Their Live and Dangerous album was a big favourite of a lad I was at Uni with.... remember him saying to me after one potential seductee had refrained from staying the night with him in his room “I played her my best Thin Lizzy too !”
Also remember the fact that Leslie Crowther , bizarrely, was associated with Phil as a disapproving straight-laced father-in-law.

Re: Phil Lynott
Bit of triv. He co-wrote Parisienne Walkway with Gary Moore.
The opening line, “I remember Paris, 1949”. Phils middle name is Parris, he was born in 1949.
Great rock band.

Re: Phil Lynott
Lots of versions of 'Whiskey in the Jar' [1972] and lots of arguments online about which is the best version - this is the version I prefer.
- it's an old Irish traditional folk song, don't think anyone knows who wrote it.
a pretty good story in this song, which I was unaware of until five minutes ago.

PL's mum, Philomena, had the Clifton Grange Hotel, Whalley Range, Manchester. She passed away in June of this year.

Burnley lad Terence "Tex" Read was in the roadie game and was a close pal of Phil Lynott. He tells many a story about those days of sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll.

Ted Read (not Reid) is still alive and knocking about in Burnley. I've known him for about 58 years. He told me that, amongst other things, he was best man at Phil's wedding. He also worked with Phil Collins and others. He has plenty of photos to show.Wile E Coyote wrote:was that something you read , or did you know Tex Reid, I recall meeting him once in Burnley.

Re: Phil Lynott
Proper old school rocker the sort rarely found in the music biz these days
I read an article about Phil Lynott once with various band mates and associates - everyone seemed to love him and didn’t have a bad word for him
I liked what Midge Ure said “he was a great bloke but you wouldn’t trust him with your girlfriend for 5 minutes”

Great bloke is Tex, had many a pint with him. There's a cracking pic of him sat on a sofa with Lynott, will try and dig it out.basil6345789 wrote:Ted Read (not Reid) is still alive and knocking about in Burnley.
