Leaving as a claret

Reading the Jimmy Mac thread and it made me think about players joining clubs and growing such an affinity for the club that they left as fans. Of Mac this is a certainty and probably a few others of that era, but how many modern day players exist like that?
I will put Trippier for us on the list.

As a side question, anyone know who Jimmy supported before he signed for us?

Worth pointing out that at the exact time of leaving Mac was far from a fan of the Club, and Bob Lord in particular. Plenty of animosity between the two and some of Mac's departing words as he left us included " Good enough for my country but not for my Club."

I know Vokes is a big Southampton fan but I think he left as a claret. In the interview he did over the summer he said he would be taking his newborn on to Turf Moor for their first game as soon as they were old enough.

Robbie Blake always seems to speak like he's a Claret, no idea if he's still a fan though.

Ralph Coates didn't want to leave

...think Harry Potts cried when he had to tell Ralph he was being sold by Burnley!

David Eyres, predominantly a Everton fan but still refers to “we” and“us” when talking about Burnley

John Angus rarely watches any football on TV, however, he is always interested in our result and always asks about the general atmosphere at the club and how we are performing.

I think most players humour fans with this nonsense. They’re only doing a job.

Bob Lord, as most despotic chairman did at the time, sold players againgst their wish.
Andy Lochhead thought he was being summoned to be praised for a good game the previous week only to be told to hurry up to the station as hed been sold to Villa.
No consultation back then.

I agree with that to some extent, plenty of hollow words spoken when a player leaves a club. Although I tend to believe the likes of Vokes and Heaton who were part of something very special and arguably achieved the pinnacle of their career with us.

Very different of course to the days when players lived in the town while playing for Burnley, then continued to do so after leaving or returned on retirement

Andy was sold to Leicester City then onto Villa following his Cup Final appearance in 1969...but probably had little say in where and who he should play for

There's a couple mentioned on the thread who were born Clarets - Brian Miller and Ashley Hoskin - and continued that support after leaving the club.

Brian continued to go on the Turf until he was taken ill and Ashley still goes on and has travelled to away games in recent years.

Yes, had the same PE teachers a few years later, they swore it was Burnley FC or jail for Andy, glad it went his way.

Leighton whining James signed for us over and over...deep down, he must be a Claret!

Michael Duff

However, the true affinity is the players who returned to live nearby.

Is it not more a case of where the players settle rather than like true fans eg myself and Ashington Claret and many more doing a lot of miles to get to the Turf because we supported the club as kids and lived in or near the Town?. Had Jimmy Mac settled in Stoke would he have been a Claret going to the Turf from Stoke or Stan if he had settled back in Sunderland and not Burnley?

Stan’s a Sunderland fan but until a couple of years ago he was still working in football.

He can be a hot head, his team mates had little time for him but there’s also a really good side to Taffy. I’ve not seen him since he came up to see us play Swansea in 2011 and I know he’s had some serious health issues since although I think he’s ok now.

I can imagine you’d be tearing your hair out if you were working with him every day but I got on really well with him and, although a Swansea fan, he does care about our club.

[quote-although a Swansea fan, he does care about our club.[/quote]

probably less-so since we wouldn't allow him to be accompanied by both his grandchildren (one with Burnley shirt/one with Swansea shirt) when he was asked to do the half-time draw in 2017

think he refused to appear because of the petty attitude of the club! :?

That was the hot headed James referred to above. I know that was resolved more than amicably and it wasn't the petty attitude of the club but the petty attitude of one person.
