Oldham Athletic vs Burnley
Oldham Athletic vs Burnley
One of my earliest memories of following the clarets was when my dad took me to watch us play Oldham at Boundary Park in the 90s.
I was very young at the time and can’t particularly remember much about the game. My most vivid memory (I think) was that a helicopter landed on pitch to airlift a player possibly. I don’t know if I’ve dreamt this or whether anyone can recall the game and give me more details of the game in particular.
Thanks in advance.

Only game i remember v oldham in 90s was THAT 3 all draw when we looked doomed after surrendering a lead.
There were lots of fans and police on pitch but no helicopter.

Re: Oldham Athletic vs Burnley
We played them early on in the 99/00 season also with Payton scoring in a one nil win I think.
Re: Oldham Athletic vs Burnley
....and did we draw with them in 98/99 at Boundary Park?

Second away game of the season and I think Payton also scored in the 1-1 draw there in the previous season during that late unbeaten run.burnmark wrote:We played them early on in the 99/00 season also with Payton scoring in a one nil win I think.

Was the 3-0 one when Sean McCarthy (i think) scored 2 or 3 and did a somersault celebration in front of the Burnley fans nearly starting a riot?
Might be completely wrong but thats a vague memory of the only time I went Oldham

The end of CT's post mentioned it was during an unbeaten run late in the season - Stan's first season not the promotion season. Missed the early season games at Oldham as I was always playing cricket, probably still cold though.

Yes, the 1-1 draw was in 1998/99 during the 11 game unbeaten run st the end of the season. It was the fifth of those games. The 1-0 win was early the following season.NL Claret wrote:The end of CT's post mentioned it was during an unbeaten run late in the season - Stan's first season not the promotion season. I have a very vague memory of a snowy game at Hartlepool, probably early Eighties, after which I was in hospital for two days. It was the coldest I’ve ever been

Re: Oldham Athletic vs Burnley
The best one was in 1973-74 in the FA Cup. Burnley fans swept across the pitch and took the Chaddy End over. Closely followed by the Anglo-Scottish Cup final in very late 1978. We went two up in a minute in icy conditions.
Both games ended in 4-1 victories.

Seemed to remember a lot of Clarets not bothering with the turnstyles and climbing over, or creating huge holes in the fence, to get in.

Re: Oldham Athletic vs Burnley
There were pieces in the national papers on the morning of the FA Cup tie with Oldham manager Jimmy Frizzell saying that Leighton James wouldn't get past his right back Ian Wood (who later played for us). Apparently Adamson just showed Taffy the reports. After 6 minutes we were 2-0 up through Dobson & Fletcher with both coming from James left wing crosses and we had also wrongly had a third disallowed that came in the same way.Quicknick wrote:The best one was in 1973-74 in the FA Cup. The Anglo Scottish final should never really have been played. I think Torville & Dean would have been better equipped to play on that pitch.

We beat Sheffield United 4-2 on the turf that season and it was on tv (ITV I think, but well before ITV digital) and if memory serves John Gayle scored twice, once with his shoulder.
I might have made most of that up....memory is a bit hazy.

He did score with his shoulder but was his only goal. The others were scored by Davis, Hoyland & Robinson.duncandisorderly wrote:We beat Sheffield United 4-2 on the turf that season and it was on tv (ITV I think, but well before ITV digital) and if memory serves John Gayle scored twice, once with his shoulder.

Robinson had been decent at Bury but was nothing like the player when we got him because of injuries. Was always said that Mullen was trying to buy someone else from Bristol City but they offered him Robinson and he said yes.Dark Cloud wrote:Robinson!!!! (as well as Gayle!) I'm guessing it was that season then that John Gayle ended Nicky Spooners career on the Turf in the infamous John McGinley game? Was certainly a feisty atmosphere that day!

Re: Oldham Athletic vs Burnley
Is it true that the Sheff U TV game was the first time we played on a Sunday? I remember Mullen playing up to the cameras, the result, watching it back when me and my dad got home and laughing our heads off at the size of John Gayles flob.
