Pilsner urquel when fresh is unbelievably good
Re: favorite lager
Frequenting an East European shop has produced some gems:
Perła honey lager from Lublin - goes very well with desserts.
Volfas Engelman from Kaunas, a range of lagers in cans to suit all tastes, and excellent on draught last year in Vilnius.
Švyturys bottled lagers from Klaipėda and Utena, also Lithuania.
Lāčplēsis from Rīga.
Cēsu, also from Latvia.
A Le Coq from Estonia.
These go nicely with Paluszky pretzel sticks.

Belgian stuff Jupiler is lovely, but my fave is Peroni Nastro Azzuro. Estrella gets an honourable mention as does bottles off green mahou.

Re: favorite lager
Current favorites are Estrella Galicia and Estrella Damm.
When I was a very junior lawyer in a City firm in London, the deal between Kroenbourg and Whitbread to make and sell Kronenbourg under licence in the UK nearly broke down because Whitbread refused to accept Kronenbourg's quality requirements. So, to avoid crap UK lager, find one that is imported (difficult, if not in bottle) or drink a good UK one (in London Camden Hells is good, if pricey).

Re: favorite lager
Proper versions of shite beer are superb.
Belgian Stella is almost mindblowingly good, (so too Jupiler but it's less well known) as is proper dutch Heineken.
Cans from bargain booze can't do it justice.

That's literal horse-poop you've been fed there mateLord Beamish wrote:Little known fact; San Miguel is Spanish for ‘same again’.
There was a big advertising campaign based around it, back in the ‘70s, when Brits started getting into the Package Holiday boom.
San Miguel was named after the day the company was incorporated, which was the feast day of Saint Micheal the Archangel.
Little know fact; it originated from the Philippines in 1890 and only started being sold in Spain from 1946.

Re: favorite lager
Can't believe I'm seeing Estrella on here? It's the Heineken of Mexican beer. In New Mexico we go for Carta Blanca. It's about a $1 a bottle and you have to throw about 3 limes in to make it palatable but my God when it's cold it's good.
Also to comment on someone above nearly all north American mass produced lagers use rice or corn, including Budweiser.

Italian lager is on a par with Carling and (old) Carlsberg. Horrible stuff that's marketed well and sold to the Sheux brigade at £4.50 a pop.

It's the ones brewed in the UK under licence that tend to be a bit of a let down. I always check if it's imported.

I don’t know if Red Stripe has been mentioned as a favourite lager. I’ve spent quite a bit of time In Jamaica over the years and found Red Stripe goes rather well with sitting by a pool listening to reggae.

Nice try, however I’m talking about Red Stripe draught from the poolside bar. Or when I’m home, from a bottle. I NEVER drink beer from a tin……yuck!

Barbecue tackle Lol. Great review.ChrisG wrote:Page 2 and no mention of the king of the tins, Rheinbacher? 3 quid for 4 tins in Aldi, ace barbeque tackle.
It’s a pretty decent true German pils and they also sell it in bottles
Camden Hells is my current favourite - sold in mini airline size cans - so you don’t look like an alky on the early morning awayday train
Honourable Mention for warsteiner (bottled) and krombacher(some spoons have bottles leisure)
Agree the Sainsbury’s own brand Czech lager beats staropramen ( the own brand stuff is actually imported the bottled staro is brewed in burton)

Re: favorite lager
Don't drink by the gallon any more so occasionally enjoy a couple of bottles of Leffe. I think it tastes awesome when you haven't had it for a while but if you drink it regularly I think it loses its 'specialness' and I become indifferent to it. More regulars if not on an ale - Estrella, San Mig, Peroni, Staropramen, Budvar. Quite enjoy a weissbier too. In fact the German beers (which are generally lager style) are usually great Paulaner and Franziskaner to name a couple.
