favorite lager

Post by Shore claret » Wed Aug 21, 2019 11:03 am

was out on sunday and the pub I was in had Estrella on Tap, my favorite lager, followed on with some Budvar and then some Straropramen.
Just wondering what the lager louts favorite tipple is.

Like a lot of the Czech stuff. Morreti, Peroni, Kingfisher, Tsingtao and Estrella are nice too. Actually I like quite a lot!

Anyone who drinks lager really pees me off. But, then again, I’ve always been a bitter man.

Tsingtao and Kingfisher are 2 crisp clean lagers . Though truth be told premium lager isn’t much different the world over .

Certainly would say San Miguel (and I would say San not Sam ;) ). Reminds me of balmy evenings in Spain (where, for some reason, it always tastes better).

Little known fact; San Miguel is Spanish for ‘same again’.
There was a big advertising campaign based around it, back in the ‘70s, when Brits started getting into the Package Holiday boom.

I once found a rooftop bar in Barcelona which served San Miguel and it was by far the best lager I'd ever tasted. Whether it was my surroundings or they just had the beer temperature to absolute perfection, I don't know. When I'm not hanging around in Spanish rooftop bars though, I tend to buy Staropramen.

Another vote for Estrella. Tiger is also very nice. I loved the beer over in Thailand like Chang, Singha, Leo etc.

Worst: Carlsberg, by a country mile.

Try and make sure its the Czech stuff, not the Leeds brewed nonsense.

I mean, by Czech standards Staro is ****, but compared to fosters etc, fair enough

It was in Prague that I discovered Staropramen. I was hardly in a fit state to be the best judge though

After 8 I wouldn't be asking for anything by name mate, it would be simply 'gis a beer'.
Barman: what kind?
Me: that Sam stuff.

Actually talking of one over the eight (or in this case one over the 15 I think) I got slaughtered in Nottingham at weekend and on the way back to where we were staying my good wife tripped and fell (yes she was p!ssed as well) and in my (successful) effort to stop her from actually hitting the deck I smashed my elbow and severely bruised my hip. I didn't realise the extent of the damage until I woke up the following day and looked around the hotel room at what seemed like a crime scene - there was blood everywhere, bed linen, chair arm, floor, even on the outside of the door. I was actually still bleeding :o . We cleaned everything up (apart from a blood soaked hand towel that my wife decided was better stolen than left behind).

I'm not looking for sympathy but can someone somewhere please tell me what the f*ck I was doing getting in a state like that at my age?

On a brighter note I discovered two things: you can endure a great amount of pain if you are drunk enough and Nottingham is one of the best places I know for a good night out.

In Prague in Winter: Kozel Černý, accompanied by soup in bread. Must do Velké Popovice tour on next Jet2 visit.
Would make do with bottles of Sainsbury's 'Czech' at £1.25 per 500ml, brewed by Staropramen but better than their branded stuff i m o.

I used to work for a company based in Enfield who's parent company have a sizeable presence in East Lancashire. The Ops Director at the time lived in Fence and was the guy who interviewed me at their Nottingham office and asked me a never before or repeated interview question, "Andy Payton or Billy Hamilton?" We had a night out in Nottingham that involved curry, copious amounts of beer, Vodka Revolution bar, casino and some other hazy things that I struggle to remember. We were playing a game of spoof I think it was, where you guess the amount of coins in people's hands. I got down to the last 3 and the winner, or loser dependent on how you looked at it got a selection of vodka shots. I introduced tactics, where the answer I gave couldn't possibly be correct and I secured myself the vodka shots. The Ops guy said I can't believe you play tactically at a pub game, but as a punishment, along with the tray of shots you have to down 2 pints of strong lager.

And you are spot on, it is one of the best places for a great night out though I suffered for it the following day. Not as badly as you suffered by the sound of it though....

I suspect the "Czech" is their re-labled czech brewed Branik so far superior to GB brewed staro

Predominately a real ale drinker but do have the occasional foray into lagerland on a hot day.

Kronenberg, Stella or Coors light

Aldi's Reinbacher German pilsner is ok for the odd can at home in the garden when it's BBQ time as well.

Real ale drinker but quite partial to a Mahou. Heineken, Carling, Carlsberg and Peroni are beyond hideous. Fosters too for that matter.
