Ian Holloway
Ian Holloway
Made a bit of a prat of himself, claiming the EU is to blame for the International Football Association Board's new handball rule.

My favourite bit is where he says he hopes we get out of Brexit. I'm not sure he even knows what Brexit is.

Watching the program last night, I think he tried to say that the people want Brexit, not a stupid handball rule.
He was just trying to get a funny line in to keep him relevant and invited back on shows.

Like him. Good pundit. Knowledgable and fair on the Championship.

Re: Ian Holloway
He said some droll things a few years back, and it gained him a bit of a reputation for being a “character”.
He seems to have been chasing his own shadow ever since.

Re: Ian Holloway
He’s on talkSPORT a lot too.
He’s quite funny on the odd occasion but mostly says weird stuff on a regular basis. He’s definitely an old fashioned football man in terms of values and is usually very complimentary about Burnley.
He ain’t to clever though and seems more than a bit eccentric - he always speaks well of his relationship with Karl Oyston - which in itself is a bit weird as he’s the only person I have ever know that has a good word about him and his family.
I’m sure Holloway said the other day he’s taken up bodybuilding - I could well have dreamt that though !

Re: Ian Holloway
Ian Holloway’s managerial career seems similar to Coyle’s. A bit of minor success early on, before finding a club where everything clicked. Downhill from there and now nobody takes him seriously.

Re: Ian Holloway
Everything's the EU's fault. Don't you know that already? We'd have bendy bananas if it wasn't for them. That's why we voted to leave. So that we can bring back our bananas.
Re: Ian Holloway
He literally linked the two, then said he didn't. Except, he did. We heard it.
Re: Ian Holloway
Also said on Talk Sport that Man Utd should have sacked Lingard after his holiday instagram (or whatever) issue

Re: Ian Holloway
Very much so and he did take Leicester into League One before landing the Blackpool job. He went to Palace and nearly got them out of the promotion chase when they looked certain too. But it all clicked at Blackpool for him when the Latvian money came in and he had players like Vaughan and Adam.agreenwood wrote:Ian Holloway’s managerial career seems similar to Coyle’s. Re: Ian Holloway
Someone I know said he was a better manager than SD when they were both in the running for the manager's job.
I never get tired of reminding him how wrong he was.

Re: Ian Holloway
Think some are being a little unfair on Holloway. He often took over BIG jobs when the clubs were in trouble, was rarely first choice and never really got a proper tilt at it. When he did he tended to do a good job.
He has been quite close to the Burnley job a couple of times in the past... and he makes no secret of his love of the town and of Pendle being one of his favourite places on earth.

He was considered also in 2012 but I believe it was just one director who was keen to bring him in.

He did well at QPR (first time), Plymouth, and Blackpool.
Far better than Coyle

This was when he described a QPR win, that wasn't the best performance, as pulling not the best looking woman on a Saturday night out.

Far better and far more experienced than Owen Coyle, actually would of loved him to come in when Coyle left.
Re: Ian Holloway
The IFAB (International Football Association Board) -- the governing body which determines the laws of the game -- comprises the English FA (1 vote), the Football Association of Wales (1 vote), the Scottish FA (1 vote), the (Northern) Irish FA (1 vote), and FIFA (all other football associations combined - 4 votes). Rule changes require a three-quarter majority vote (6 votes). FIFA holds a 50% vote share (4 votes), meaning any rule chamges need the consent of at least two UK Legacy (as they're called) member associations alongside FIFA's votes. Ian Holloway seems to have gotten himself into a pickle, believing that these laws have been inflicted upon English football as though we have no say or lobbying power whatsoever in the matter.Ian Holloway wrote:I think that’s people telling us what we should do with our game. Now, they should stop doing that. I hope we get out of Brexit, because that’s what we all voted for, and sort that out, because you cannot have someone telling us how to do our own game.
On a side note, this kind of insecure bone-headed stupidity and ignorance isn't altogether uncommon or unheard of in our times. Just for the record...

He might be a tad eccentric but I would sooner listen to him talking football than the likes of Garth Crooks and some of the other so called experts.

Re: Ian Holloway
Ian Holloway gave me one of the most enjoyable games I ever watched: Back in the Cotterill era we played Plymouth one night about the end of February, my brother had won some raffle so we'd had a meal in the Jimmy Mac stand then were sat in one of the posh seats immediately behind the away dug out next to Martin Dobson; as I recall we'd got maybe 1 point and two goals since Christmas, so expectations weren't high but during the second half Plymouth imploded and we won about 5-1.Suratclaret wrote:He might be a tad eccentric...
That in itself would've been pretty good, but we got into conversation with Ian Holloway throughout most of the second half - he was not best impressed by his teams performance - and having realised that it was a lost cause, the conversation became increasingly hilarious. Highlights were his trying to get Dobbo to 'find some boots and I'll put you on' claiming that he'd give him the shirt from one of his subs (a slight, 5'6" black lad) and 'the officials would never spot the difference. When he couldn't swing that he offered me a sub's-shirt instead, I pointed out the Ilizarov-frame I had on my leg but he was still optimistic that I could 'offer more than the long string of expletives that he had on the field at the moment'. As we left he was on the phone trying to blag a lift back to Plymouth with some of the Plymouth supporters, adamant that otherwise he would walk rather than spend the next six hours on a bus back to Plymouth with that 'the longest unbroken string of expletives I've ever heard team'.

And the main man at IFAB is David Elleray.Spiral wrote:The IFAB (International Football Association Board) -- the governing body which determines the laws of the game -- comprises the English FA (1 vote), the Football Association of Wales (1 vote), the Scottish FA (1 vote), the (Northern) Irish FA (1 vote), and FIFA (all other football associations combined - 4 votes). Re: Ian Holloway
I remember him being interviewed at length about Burnley when his name entered the frame in 2012... where he talks of his love of the place. He also admitted turning the job down, as you mention. Something he felt was not right thing to do for his young family at the time, though he would have loved the challenge.ClaretTony wrote:He was close once. People will look and say it would have been a disaster, but he thrived at clubs were expectations were grounded, as mentioned.
Still think we did alright going the way we did though.
