O/T Planning a trip in Venice - tips?

Post by icu81b4 » Sun Aug 25, 2019 9:32 pm

Hi, just thought I'd tap into the brains of the international travelers on this forum, I'm planning a couple of days in Venice, with a trip to the island of Burano, wondering whether to also visit Lido, any thoughts?

I'd avoid the hot summer months, it can be very pungent ...

Depending on whether you are desperate to do all the 'main' tourist hotspots (Bridge of Sighs, St Mark's Square and church,Doges Palace, Rialto) all of which will be very crowded unless you can get in early, then try to visit one or more of the islands- Burano and Murano both well worth the visit. The water bus is a regular service and not expensive. Then on the way back get off the boat before it gets to the Grand canal and walk through the little streets following the wall signs and take in the little bridges and and the less touristy squares which are very picturesque and so much less crowded than the main pathways. You'll also avoid the visitor groups led by someone holding a flag or umbrella !!

Burano & Murano are both worth the visit. One does glass and t’other lace. We did them both in a day on the water bus, it also stops at the cemetery which is another island but we gave that a miss.
Never done the lido but heard good things.

Stay in mestre it’s cheaper you can get a bus into Venice-in less than 10mins the square in mestre has lots of restaurants and bars and the price of food and drinks is a lot less than Venice
