After two wins, it's a first defeat of the season in 1959/60

Certainly brought us back down to earth, and after such a good start.

Shades of last night.

What some would say as typical Burnley. A really good performance followed by a let down.

Dad said Tommy Cummings looked out of position at left-back. A problem that was soon about to be solved.

I never saw him play there and never saw him at right back either. My dad said he was very quick in his early days but I only ever saw Tommy in his later seasons at centre half.

No coincidence that as soon as both John Angus and Alex Elder arrived then Tommy's time at both right-back and left-back came to an end. Some players are suited to a certain position and without doubt centre-half was Tommy's.
He even scored the greatest goal ever seen at Turf Moor with the No.5 on his back.

That goal was scored seven days after I was born but I know all about it. My dad told me and I lost count of the number of times Tommy himself told me about it. If he'd become an after dinner speaker it would have been his first, second and ...... last story, I'm sure.

I'm lucky enough to own a framed limited edition print of that goal (No.38 of 100), it's one of my proudest possessions.

Tommy just said, in the most humble way, "I had no-one to pass to".

Great memories if not a great result.it seemed a long walk home after the match! Like CT I didn't see the Cummings goal and also my dad always claimed it was the best goal he had seen at the Turf. Next door...Collie Smith...great cricketer and always entertaining.
