Re: ARTICLE: Pope back in England squad
Southgate commented that he was an old fashioned keeper but keeps the ball out of the net!
disappointed that Tarks isn't selected but the 'fashionable Villa' Mings is!

Re: ARTICLE: Pope back in England squad
To be honest, not sure what Tarky has to do to get in given his early season performances.

Dissapointing for Tarky and Mee.

I don't think we are going to see Ben Mee get into an England squad. He's not the type of Southgate selects. Very disappointing for Tarky.ClaretAL wrote:Dissapointing for Tarky and Mee.

Probably move to what is perceived to be a more fashionable club. I've only seen him on TV, but thought he was playing at least as good as when he was previously selected for international duty.ClaretTony wrote:To be honest, not sure what Tarky has to do to get in given his early season performances.

Re: ARTICLE: Pope back in England squad
The non inclusion of Tarks is hilarious, can only be that he under performed in previous call ups during training
Re: ARTICLE: Pope back in England squad
On form, Barnes should be in for Wilson and Tarks for Keane. Sadly I don't think Ben will ever get a call up, even though he is the perfect Foil for a Tarks or Keane.

Re: ARTICLE: Pope back in England squad
He's been as good as I've seen him recently, and is a far better player than Mings in my opinion. I'm sure there's fans at every premier league club confused by some decisions but he cant pick them all.

Re: ARTICLE: Pope back in England squad
Mings is 6’5”. Mee isn’t. Southgate loves monsters at the back, see Stones, Maguire, Keane.
Mings has played 35 matches since 2015, only 20 of them in the PL and not all of them succesful. This is a dreadful decision. He is the current flavour of the month.
Ben Mee will never play for England and whilst they throw caps around like confetti that is outrageous. He is a proven PL defender who makes the guy next to him look good.

Re: ARTICLE: Pope back in England squad
Southgate sticks with players from his U21 days, primarily...even if they fail to deliver, they do dazzle him.
He has had Tarkowski. He is trying Mings. Nothing in that.
Mee doesn't fit - just an excellent defender. Southgate likes less able, error strewn passers.
Well done to Nick.

Re: ARTICLE: Pope back in England squad
Funny how a team of lesser players at Northern Ireland do so well as a team.
Re: ARTICLE: Pope back in England squad
Ben Mee is like Steve Bruce was, does the dirty stuff really well but isn't deemed good enough on the ball to get picked for England. Leaving Tarks out is a bigger joke, especially given that he has regularly played with two of the England keepers. Surely it is beneficial to try and pick players who are familiar with each other where possible.ClaretTony wrote:I don't think we are going to see Ben Mee get into an England squad. Re: ARTICLE: Pope back in England squad
Good for Pope. On this occasion based on form Tarkowski should be in it.

Mings in an England squad - the world has gone mad. Absolutely shocking.
Tarka and Mee just need to carry on as they are, they'll get there eventually

He isn't going to pick Ben Mee, it's simple as that.

Re: ARTICLE: Pope back in England squad
Always mixed feelings for me when the internationals squads are announced. Brings great kudos to the club when players are selected and I’m sure it helps “round” and add to their experience.
On the other hand it increases the injury risk with extra games and puts them in the shop window.
I’m on the fence.

That doesn't help. I gathered from the tone of your post that you were satirising Burnley fans' view that Barnes was better than Wilson. If you were genuinely suggesting that Lennon is better than Sterling ...Dyched wrote:I actually compared Sterling to Lennon.

Re: ARTICLE: Pope back in England squad
Always thought it would benefit England if the 2 centrebacks and goallie were from the same team (providing they were on form of course). Pope / Heaton with Tarks and Mee in defence would be solid. The exclusion of Barnes up front is laughable.
Re: ARTICLE: Pope back in England squad
McNeil had a brilliant half season yet didn't get near the full England squad. Mason Mount has had three good games so far this season yet gets in despite playing far fewer matches.
Just shows the bias towards the bigger clubs.

You mean like the one he, Heaton, Keane, Cork & Pope were all playing for when they got their first call ups.Stayingup wrote:Join a bigger more fashionable club. Its misjustice Tarka not getting picked.

Re: ARTICLE: Pope back in England squad
Maybe he has taken into account Mount's previous seasons - 60+ league games played. If he was only taking 2019/20 into account then he wouldn't be selecting McNeil.Spijed wrote:McNeil had a brilliant half season yet didn't get near the full England squad. Re: ARTICLE: Pope back in England squad
Southgate has seen plenty of our games, it's not as if he's ignoring our players. Does anyone seriously believe that any international manager would not include a player he thought good enough on the basis of which club they play for?
Re: ARTICLE: Pope back in England squad
But when they play for us they have 2 full backs who barely cross the half way line and 2 holding midfielders who don't really go anywhere. Throw in our wide players who do plenty of defensive work and lots of the time when we defend we have 8 men in a defensive shape, which they wouldn't have for England. Anyone with any pace would roast them alive.Sutton-Claret wrote:Always thought it would benefit England if the 2 centrebacks and goallie were from the same team (providing they were on form of course). Theo Walcott got picked for the squad by Sven despite never having played, probably because he'd signed for Arsenalboatshed bill wrote:Southgate has seen plenty of our games, it's not as if he's ignoring our players. Re: ARTICLE: Pope back in England squad
Why all this calamity for Mee not being selected? He’s nowhere near good enough to play international football for England. A very brave defender who puts himself on the line but that’s all he has. Far too slow and not big enough for a starters and not the most comfortable on the ball it’s perfectly easy to see why he’s never being selected. Our defensive shape makes Mee look way better than he actually is, he’s of no use if he’s in a team who play expansive football.
