When people start getting killed for being fat or bald then you'll have a point.

Another thread about homophobia, and to no ones surprise Blackrod is showing sympathy for the homophobes.Blackrod wrote:Could this lead to ‘ who are all the pies ? ...... you f*t b*st*rd ....” stopping a game ?

IT Making things up again to suit his agenda. I’ve no ‘sympathy’ for them. I’m commenting on the fact it is unusual for a game to be stopped for chanting and where it might lead. There are a lot of ‘unacceptable’ comments at matches and my post is more about who decides where the line is drawn.
Re: Homophobic chants halt Ligue 1 game between Nice and Marseille
FIFA World Cup 2018 Stadium Code (could shed some light on the issue Blackrod raised, perhaps someone can find one more appropriate to Ligue 1 but I can't read French!)
https://resources.fifa.com/mm/document/ ... eutral.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
So I imagine it's all pretty broad-brush stuff, used to knuckle down on bigotry and discrimination wherever they see fit to punish it, but nobody committed a holocaust on folks for eating a pie or twenty so I can't see FIFA making an issue of it, even if Blackrod wants to. No doubt he's genuinely curious to know where the line is and not at all attempting to downplay homophobia.

But there again section 6.1.6 saysFIFA wrote: 6. Prohibited actions
6.1. During the Events, Spectators are prohibited from:
6.1.3. insulting any other persons (which includes by use of banners, signs and other means of visual propaganda) and carrying out any other activities that humiliate and insult people, their human dignity or business reputation, acting, chanting or using language in any way that is discriminatory or extremist, aimed against a country, person or group based on race, colour of skin, ethnic, national or social background and wealth, birth or any other status, gender, disability, age, language, religion, political or other opinion, sexual orientation or on any other grounds

Re: Homophobic chants halt Ligue 1 game between Nice and Marseille
Under 6.1 I would say that calling someone fat could be humiliating and insulting. Chanting that the ref doesn’t know what he is doing is insulting and and could damage his reputation as a Professional referee so this should fall foul of this too as would chanting ‘you are getting sacked in the morning ‘ to a manager. So my point stilll stands.
Re: Homophobic chants halt Ligue 1 game between Nice and Marseille
Exactly, right! Cover as much bigotry as you can in black and white but leave aside a provision for, essentially, "being a tw@t", that allows FIFA to govern according to common sense. You should take it up with them, Blackrod. Write them an email. Or...rather, send them a carrier pigeon; that would be more apropos coming from you.

And the clever apes were then told to accept everything they were ordered to agree with and to smile and nod. The majority followed the orders but just a few with the strongest will power said no. The strong said it is against our rights not to be able to differ in opinion, and we won't be told what to think.
They then proceeded to smash all the other apes up and took control of reality.

Blacktod, do you know what protected characteristics are?
Maybe if you read the Equalty Act, which your employer should have trained you in, then you might understand a little more.

I think it was the huge banner stating that OM are an LGBT club that halted things rather than the resulting chants . Don’t a few French teams use the “ gay “ term against their rivals ? I know PSG call OM homosexuals and I think Lille have a chant for Lyon too

Is that really the best you can do ?
Is that your view / similar response if the game was stopped for racist abuse ?
Is it all just a “bit of bants” ?

I’m confused (it is early and I’m not full of coffee yet) and the article isn’t very clear as to who was doing the chanting but who’s banner is that and is it for or against gays?
Was the homophobic chanting a reaction to the banner?

Re: Homophobic chants halt Ligue 1 game between Nice and Marseille
Two banners
1. “More fans in the stands means a more gay stadium.”
2. “Welcome to the Ineos group: at Nice we also love to pedal” A reference to the owner who also owns a cycling team. "pedale" is a French derogatory term for homosexuals.
plus the chanting, but i don't know what the chanting was.

It's ironic that most fans who chant such things are frequently overweight and very fat.

Re: Homophobic chants halt Ligue 1 game between Nice and Marseille
Homo = prefix referring to man (as in homonids).
Phobic = having a morbid fear of.
So a word that actually means 'a fear of man' is now used to describe 'a hatred of gay men'. I find it weird how words have become 'fashionable' without any thought given as to what they actually mean.

That's just how language works. The meanings of words change over time sometimes.

Its quite natural for people in all areas of life to hate something because they are scared of it so I think there is some thought behind the terminology.houseboy wrote:Homo = prefix referring to man (as in homonids).

Re: Homophobic chants halt Ligue 1 game between Nice and Marseille
The ‘Homo’ from Homosexual is not taken from the Latin for ‘Man’, it’s taken from the Greek ‘Homo’ meaning ‘the same’. Homogenised has the same derivation.houseboy wrote:Homo = prefix referring to man (as in homonids).

This is contrasted from the Greek ‘Hetero’ which means ‘different’; this is where we get the term ‘Heterosexual’.
The term Homophobic is a portmanteau of Homosexual and Phobia; Fear of Homosexuals.

All a bit vague to me, but am I right in thinking that this chanting is not directed at the players? If so why take the players off?
Re: Homophobic chants halt Ligue 1 game between Nice and Marseille
It’s probably a wee bit easier for the referee to clear the pitch than clear the stands.boatshed bill wrote:All a bit vague to me, but am I right in thinking that this chanting is not directed at the players? If so why take the players off?

Re: Homophobic chants halt Ligue 1 game between Nice and Marseille
Good points. I was aware of the Greek term for 'same' but was unsure of the root of the actual word homophobic. I find this sort of thing interesting. In this case homophobic can then mean either 'fear of man'(if using the Latin meaning for homo) or, slightly more odd in my view, fear of the same (if using Greek). Either way neither seems to fit with hatred of gays, unless as Devil has pointed out a hatred of something can over-spill into a fear of it.Lord Beamish wrote:The ‘Homo’ from Homosexual is not taken from the Latin for ‘Man’, it’s taken from the Greek ‘Homo’ meaning ‘the same’. The term Homophobic is a portmanteau of Homosexual and Phobia; Fear of Homosexuals.
Either way hating someone for an accident of birth is wholly wrong. I find it hard in this day and age that some people still think being homosexual or lesbian is a lifestyle choice. This kind of thinking is what leads many young people to being confused about what exactly sexuality is. Many of them 'experiment' with it as though they can actually CHOOSE which way they want to go, which of course is nonsense, only nature can do that for you.
Long live X and Y and all it's permutations.
Being bi-sexual is wrong though - that's just bloody greedy.

Re: Homophobic chants halt Ligue 1 game between Nice and Marseille
A wee bit of context; this all started when during a lower-league game fans chanted things such as 'the league can get f.ucked in the ass' (or words to that effect) and used a word which in English is similar to faggot, or puff, which the league took to be homophobic. The League reacted to this telling referees to stop games if they hear similar chants or see similar slogans on banners. This is basically a battle between the league and ultras over where the line is between a slur and a homophobic slur. A lot of ultras on the continent use sexualised imagery and language which is definitely charged, but which they claim isn't used in a discriminatory manner, like the way gayboy and puff used to be common insults used near-universally when I was at school decades ago. They're lagging a little bit behind us in terms of tolerating this.boatshed bill wrote:All a bit vague to me, but am I right in thinking that this chanting is not directed at the players?
