Well wolves have done what we unfortunately couldn't. Granted they had a lot easier run than us but will always think we missed an opportunity for some big Thursday nights at home and abroad

A missed opportunity which could have seen us playing at Wigan this weekend --who knows?

It's a real shame that the board and the manager seemingly had this mindset.

Bs. I’m assuming you watched the games against Olympiakos where we more than deserved to get through. God knows what would have happened if we did but you can hardly blame the board and manager for what happened in Athens.

Let’s have it right - our opener which should have been against some backwater minnow ended up being Aberdeen. Next round against a team that could (and should) have been Turkish champions, then final round Olympiakos, who have loads of European experience.

Wolves have played some team from Northern Ireland, Pyunik and their toughest challenge has been Torino. Hardly comparable.

It hasn’t been comparable. We got just about the toughest draw in each round. And I’m still not sure how we didn’t go through after that second leg performance against Olympiacos.

What nonsense, sorry. Of course we can blame them. It was unforgivable and the definition of that word means we have to keep bringing it up unfortunately.

Olympiacos are now in the last 32 of the Champions League and play in an atmosphere that is tempestuous to say the least. It was like nothing most of our players will ever have seen. A deafening environment.

You don’t go to a place like that with your fullback on the wing, your two reserve centre backs starting, and your hard as nails outfield captain sat on the bench in his tracksuit being spat at. We were stupid, left ourselves a hostage to fortune, insulted the travelling fans, and gave ourselves far too much to do in the second leg.

But well done Wolves - proper leadership and got what they deserved.

other than Torino they couldn't have had an easier route, so much so I'm surprised at how their PL form has suffered...........if you can class draws against Leicester away, Man Utd and Burnley at home as suffering - they should have lost the last 2 games though

Fair play to em. Embraced being in the competition and got their rewards. Got a bit of luck with the draw but went out to Torino with their strongest team, unlike us going out to Athens with a makeshift line up.

Unfortunately we used European games as glorified pre-season friendlies. The same way we use cup games as training games for the 2nd string.

Seems strange that the vast majority of those who beg we qualified for the group stage made no effort themselves to go to any of the away games and probably missed some of the home ones too.

Still it allows some of the usuals another cry

I dont think it would have done as much damage if it would have been straight through to group stages.

Its is 100% the qualifiers what damage with no proper pre-season.

Do you work for Cambridge Analytics or something cos you seem to know a lot. I only go on a few games a season nowadays but the chance of qualifying for Europe took me back to being a kid in the 4th Div Championship season.

I couldnt go to Aberdeen away but came back to Burnley for it, went on the home game against the Turks and went to Athens.

For someone who only goes on 2 or 3 games a season I can assure you that this was something special that got me and probably a lot of other older fans who've drifted away from going on back at it again.

Had we qualified for the group stages Id have definitely gone to one of the away ties and probably two given funds, work and reasonable destination.

Or might just have raised our profile enough to attract bigger players and raised awareness of the club globally (or at least Europe wide). Are we to assume if we have a good season that Dyche will tell the players to ease off toward the end of the season in case we qualify for Europe again? What is it with Dyche's hatred of cups and why do so many on here agree with him?

Do people not want variation from the slog of PL survival? Good grief I despair, I really do.

Let's face it the first half of last season couldn't have been any worse. The feel good factor of making the group stage would have given everyone at the club a lift and maybe even picked up a few more points.

I'd be interested to know if the club, or manager, sought any advice on how to proceed. After all we had no modern European experience and it must have been difficult to know how to prepare for the start of the Premier League whilst trying to progress in the early stages of the Europa Cup.

I can assure you the club spoke to a good number of clubs to gather information and assistance. Our off field approach was very thorough led by Matt Williams.

On the playing side I’d expect it was very much the same and I suspect Sean Dyche contacted several managers and clubs just as Nuno contacted us this year.

Also done at supporter level. Burnley FC Supporters Groups had meetings and discussions with numerous clubs fan organisations including the Euro regulars like Spurs, Liverpool & Manchester United and some of the less regulars like Everton & Leicester.

I actually think that our seemingly half arsed approach to Europe was one of the reasons we were so poor at the start of last season.

We went from 6 seasons of being this well oiled, relentless, rigid, it's your shirt until you lose it team, to a team that give everyone a kick on Thursday night but then tried to go back to being what we'd been for 6 seasons 3 days later. It confused matters.

It wasn't being in Europe that cost us in the first half of last season, but more approach to it, in my opinion.

Agree and from some of the comments on this and other similat threads you'd think that we didn't get past the 1st round! We played 6 games, won 2, drew 3 and lost 1 and this was to a team who this year are in the Champions League!

Yes but that 1 defeat shows we threw the game.

Same with the Lincoln game we threw that, good job we got a bye to the 5th round or we would have been out in the 3rd round again

Did you see the 2nd leg game? If you did then you'll know that we certainly tried to win it! And in fact should have done so.

From the BBC website -

Burnley dominated from start to finish but it was not to be.

Vokes was unfortunate to see his curling attempt rebound off a post early in the second half having earlier missed two golden opportunities.

He headed agonisingly wide after a super cross from the impressive McNeil, making his first competitive start, before putting a header from point-blank range over the bar.

Barnes saw a deflected first-time shot roll wide while McNeil, who was brought up in Manchester United's youth academy, forced a one-handed save from Andreas Gianniotis.

Olympiakos used their vast European experience to progress, Podence's away goal seven minutes from time making it 4-1 on aggregate to end Burnley's realistic hopes of going through.

Czech Republic forward Vydra did manage to mark his first appearance since signing from Derby with a goal after a scramble inside the Olympiakos penalty area.

However, the goal came too late to prove significant.

So let me get this straight.

We drew at Sunderland away on purpose
Beat them in a reply
Beat Bristol City at home
Before we decided to throw a game vs Lincoln

Righto

Do not despair, it isn't good for you.

I have seen us play in what, for me, will always be the proper European competition, unfortunately, nothing can compare with that because it truly meant that the winners were the Champions of Europe.

The competitions now are just a vehicle for UEFA to make money from TV rights etc. and are open to all and sundry and they manufacture another match to see who are the true champions! Liverpool are champions and have not won their domestic League since 1989/90 and were then prevented from entering the proper competition.

Your assumptions that they may raise our profile and attract bigger players etc., etc. may or may not be true ----as I said in my original statement ---who knows?
I was merely saying what may or may not have happened had we stayed in the Europa League -----who knows?

Ha ha - cheers bud. I'm just old fashioned I suppose. I still believe in playing your (pretty much) strongest side in every competitive game. Players are fitter than ever these days and the season (in the PL) is shorter than the old first division used to be so why are managers so damned afraid of playing first elevens? I know I bang on about it so much (ad nauseum I suppose) but if with the fitness regimes and dietary advice they get these days it isn't possible to play about 3 hours of football a week why are they getting paid 50/100/150k per week? And for doing something they (at least should) enjoy.
